Stephen M. Miller – Sunday, 2 February 2014 - Hi, RezChat
I almost forgot to write this edition.
Lots going on.
Including Linda deciding to throw a Super Bowl Party. Okay by me. She's
cleaning house now. I'm for anything that
makes that happen. And if it involves a good football game, all
the better.
It's a Bahadur Sunday.
They've got the spiritual food and the sugar.

Sunday's session:
How sure are we about God?
Here's the session description from the curriculum track:
My hope is built on
blessed assurance. Mixing metaphors to confuse the faithful. Are we hoping we
got the God thing right, or are we sure we got it right?
Here are the Bible
passages from the New Living Translation.
John 20:30-31
30 The disciples saw Jesus do many other miraculous signs in
addition to the ones recorded in this book.
31 But these are written so that you may continue to believe[a]
that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing in him you
will have life by the power of his name.
Footnotes:
20:31 Some manuscripts read that you may believe.
1 John 5:13, 20
13 I have written this to you who believe in the name of the Son
of God, so that you may know you have eternal life.
20 And we know that the Son of God has come, and he has given us
understanding so that we can know the true God. And now we live in fellowship
with the true God because we live in fellowship with his Son, Jesus Christ. He
is the only true God, and he is eternal life.
Mark 9:16-24
16 “What is all this arguing about?” Jesus asked.
17 One of the men in the crowd spoke up and said, “Teacher, I
brought my son so you could heal him. He is possessed by an evil spirit that
won’t let him talk. 18 And whenever this spirit seizes him, it throws him
violently to the ground. Then he foams at the mouth and grinds his teeth and
becomes rigid.[a] So I asked your disciples to cast out the evil spirit, but
they couldn’t do it.”
19 Jesus said to them,[b] “You faithless people! How long must I
be with you? How long must I put up with you? Bring the boy to me.”
20 So they brought the boy. But when the evil spirit saw Jesus,
it threw the child into a violent convulsion, and he fell to the ground,
writhing and foaming at the mouth.
21 “How long has this been happening?” Jesus asked the boy’s
father.
He replied, “Since he was a little boy. 22 The spirit often
throws him into the fire or into water, trying to kill him. Have mercy on us
and help us, if you can.”
23 “What do you mean, ‘If I can’?” Jesus asked. “Anything is
possible if a person believes.”
24 The father instantly cried out, “I do believe, but help me
overcome my unbelief!”
Footnotes:
9:18 Or becomes weak.
9:19 Or said to his disciples.
Super Bowl: A winter gathering
Linda decided to liven up our house tomorrow. She's inviting
folks to come over for some light appetizer-kind-of-stuff.
It's partly my fault. I
suggested having our kids over, but that fell through. The daughter child had
another party that, likely, sounded more fun. The son child is going to wear
his good-luck stinky Seahawk shirt and watch the game at his home where he is
free to react with great emotion and no audience. He's nervous enough that he
should probably be given a seat on the Seahawk's bench. He's a big fan, in love
with the city.
Linda invited several
Rez Chatters last Sunday, as she hobnobbed before and after church. But she
said I should invite any others of you that she hadn't gotten around to yet.
She said if you'd like
to bring a light snack, that would be fine. But not necessary.
You're welcome to stay
for the whole game or part of the game. Just go home at some point.
You're welcome to watch
the game, or not. Buddy the dog will provide alternate entertainment.
The Gary blog: Earl, too
BARN WAREHOUSE. Second-story view. There’s no first-story view.
Zero visibility. It’s under this pile—wall to wall and floor to here. Some
would say it’s half full. Others: half empty.
I posted a blog this week about the story we've been keeping you
up-to-date on: Earl.
The blog does not
identify Earl or Gary, but you will recognize the back of Gary's hand in the
picture. You will recognize Earl in the story. Here's the link: Helping someone
who doesn't want it.
On a personal note
It looks like Linda's mom and my mom are both suffering with
symptoms of dementia.
My mom told me this week
that her doctor says it looks like she may have the early stages of
Alzheimer's.
All the medical people
in our family doubt that diagnosis because there hasn't been any medical
testing done to substantiate that. Linda, our daughter, and my sister with whom
my mother lives all want to see further testing. So far the only testing we are
aware of the doctors doing are the Q&A tests.
Mom is having some
classic symptoms of forgetfulness: putting the TV remote in the refrigerator,
forgetting how to spell her daughter's last name, and temporarily forgetting
where she is while she is out driving. To which I said, "Stop the heck
driving." She will be 80 years old in March.
Linda's mom remains
belligerent and argumentative about her diagnosis of paranoid dementia. Which
seems to confirm the diagnosis, it seems to me. Linda took her to the doctor
this week – the doctor who had ordered her to no longer manage her own
medication or her finances. Linda's mom said the doctor did not know what he
was talking about, and she vowed never to go back to him.
The family will proceed
under the direction of a Christian lawyer who has a reputation for handling
these difficult cases as compassionately as possible.
