What a Different World!

I was listening to the radio recently and a conversation caught my attention.  People were talking about how they felt about music.  One young lady said the following.

“Like some people believe in God, I believe in music.  Some people pray; I turn up the music.”

Her words make me think both “how different” and “how sad”.  It is different in that it is another sign of how much the world has changed.  Today’s ministry context is so foreign to most long-time church people that they neither understand it nor appreciate its challenges.  It is sad in that she is missing out on a relationship with the eternal God, the inventor of the music she feels is so important.  How much better to know the Composer than to simply listen to the music and believe that is all there is.

Effective ministry today does not look like the past.  Guilt and social obligation carry almost no weight.  There are many other ways to invest time, be part of the community, develop friendships and make a difference in the world.  Churches wanting to reach the young lady I heard on the radio will have to give her a reason to come.  They will have to offer something she feels she needs.  They will have to focus on those outside of the church if they want to see them eventually show up inside the church.

Question from a Reader

I am frequently asked a question that goes something like this: “Do you really have time to work with more churches, pastors, regional bodies, etc.?”

The answer is “yes”.  While I have often been quite busy, there is an ebb and flow in this line of work.  In fact, a couple of contracts are coming to an end shortly and this is a great time for you to get your dates on the calendar.  Individual church consultations, time for regional missional strategizing, a multi-year transformation process for groups of churches, assessing prospective church planters, coaching for pastors, training events delivered live or via the Internet, keynote speaking, part-time staffing for very large churches and regional bodies, designing and leading mentoring programs, etc.  Contact us today for more information – don@dnacoaching.com.  A variety of incentives are available for larger and or longer contracts.
