Prayer Tip:
My husband and I discovered years ago that his maternal grandmother and my paternal grandmother had a few things in common. They were both women of great faith, they both had amazing gardens where they spent hours bringing beauty out of hard prairie soil, and they shared a favorite hymn, which meant that we both have very emotional reactions to hearing it. When "In the Garden" is part of the Easter Sunday worship service, you can guarantee there will be some tears in and tissues in our row.
It isn't surprising that this was a favorite for them. They were women of faith, who knew Jesus well and in a very personal way. Their worn Bibles are artifacts of lives lived in the guidance and comfort of God's Word. They were women of prayer, and this hymn describes that kind of relationship and prayer.
So, in celebration of Easter, and remembering Julia and Helen, I offer this hymn as our Easter prayer:
I come to the garden alone while the dew is still on the roses,
and the voice I hear falling on my ear, the Son of God discloses.
And he walks with me, and he talks with me,
and he tells me I am his own;
and the joy we share as we tarry there,
none other has ever known.
He speaks and the sound of his voice
is so sweet the birds hush their singing,
and the melody that he gave to me
within my heart is ringing.
And he walks with me, and he talks with me,
and he tells me I am his own;
and the joy we share as we tarry there,
none other has ever known.
