Sunday, April 6th Lent 5: The Betrayal And Arrest
8:30am Informal Worship in Epworth Lounge
9:30am Contemporary Worship in the Sanctuary
11:00am Traditional Worship in the Sanctuary
Sunday's Scriptures:
Romans 8:6-11,
Luke 22:47-53
Romans 8:6 For the mind of the flesh is death, but the mind of the Spirit is life and peace; 7 because the mind of the flesh is hostile towards God; for it is not subject to God’s law, neither indeed can it be. 8 Those who are in the flesh can’t please God. 9 But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if it is so that the Spirit of God dwells in you. But if any man doesn’t have the Spirit of Christ, he is not his. 10 If Christ is in you, the body is dead because of sin, but the spirit is alive because of righteousness. 11 But if the Spirit of him who raised up Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised up Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you.
Luke 22:47 While he was still speaking, behold, a multitude, and he who was called Judas, one of the twelve, was leading them. He came near to Jesus to kiss him. 48 But Jesus said to him, “Judas, do you betray the Son of Man with a kiss?”
49 When those who were around him saw what was about to happen, they said to him, “Lord, shall we strike with the sword?” 50 A certain one of them struck the servant of the high priest, and cut off his right ear.
51 But Jesus answered, “Let me at least do this”—and he touched his ear, and healed him. 52 Jesus said to the chief priests, captains of the temple, and elders, who had come against him, “Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs? 53 When I was with you in the temple daily, you didn’t stretch out your hands against me. But this is your hour, and the power of darkness.”

John Wesley's Notes-Commentary for:
Romans 8:6-11
Verse 6. For to be carnally minded - That is, to mind the things of the flesh. Is death - The sure mark of spiritual death, and the way to death everlasting. But to be spiritually minded - That is, to mind the things of the Spirit. Is life - A sure mark of spiritual life, and the way to life everlasting. And attended with peace - The peace of God, which is the foretaste of life everlasting; and peace with God, opposite to the enmity mentioned in the next verse.
Verse 7. Enmity against God - His existence, power, and providence.
Verse 8. They who are in the flesh - Under the government of it.
Verse 9. In the Spirit - Under his government. If any man have not the Spirit of Christ - Dwelling and governing in him. He is none of his - He is not a member of Christ; not a Christian; not in a state of salvation. A plain, express declaration, which admits of no exception. He that hath ears to hear, let him hear!
Verse 10. Now if Christ be in you - Where the Spirit of Christ is, there is Christ. The body indeed is dead - Devoted to death. Because of sin - Heretofore committed. But the Spirit is life - Already truly alive. Because of righteousness - Now attained. From ver. 13, St. Paul, having finished what he had begun, chap. vi, 1, describes purely the state of believers.
Luke 22:47-53
Verse 48. Betrayest thou the Son of man - He whom thou knowest to be the Son of man, the Christ?
Verse 49. Seeing what would follow - That they were just going to seize him. Matt. xxvi, 51; Mark xiv, 47.
Verse 51. Suffer me at least to have my hands at liberty thus far, while I do one more act of mercy.
Verse 52. Jesus said to the chief priests, and captains, and the elders who were come - And all these came of their own accord: the soldiers and servants were sent.
Verse 53. This is your hour - Before which ye could not take me: and the power of darkness - The time when Satan has power.

Drawing in the Margins
I love the way John August Swanson chose to set his Last Supper image--the one we've been praying with this week.
He sets it in a space that feels like "church," with 3 rounded archways framing the scene. And in the Last Supper, he's added rows of little images around the edges. I see in them familiar stories from the Old and New Testaments, and images of farm workers and laborers, growing grain and tending vines and making the bread and wine. All these drawings in the margins remind us that the story of Jesus' Last Supper doesn't stand alone. Instead, it comes in context with the liberating, forgiving love of God that's been present from the beginning. It becomes possible through the human community that connects us far beyond any particular table.
Like all these precious little drawings around the edges, you know yourself to be a part of the story of grace that becomes real as we share in the body of Christ.
grace and peace,

Church-Wide Lenten Study: What Wondrous Love
During Lent as are sharing in a special study of scripture, featuring art images of John August Swanson. Each week, a story from the gospels is illuminated by a companion artwork. A daily devotional (available Sunday or online) guides you through prayers for the season, and small group Bible studies deepen our study of the texts and images. The 6-week
Bible study runs from now through Easter, April 20. More info is available on our website.
Our Monday night Children's Printmaking Class has been having fun sharing the scripture stories and exploring art together!
Lay Looker by Bob Peterson
"Last Sunday I was at the all church pot-luck lunch beginning at 12:15 PM and the food was wonderful. However, there were less than the usual 100 or more and we missed you. You see, the more church members at a pot-luck means more variety of food for our choosing. Next time, please plan to attend. Usually they are the last Sunday of each month.

If One Only Knew by Bob Peterson
Last Sunday I was at the all church pot-luck lunch beginning at 12:15 PM and the food was wonderful. However, there were less than the usual 100 or more and we missed you. You see, the more church members at a pot-luck means more variety of food for our choosing. Next time, please plan to attend. Usually they are the last Sunday of each month.
Friday, March 21st I attended a showing of the musical, Fiddler on the Roof produced by the Kentwood Players and presented at the Westwood Playhouse in Westchester. Incidentally, that was the night we had a 5.1 earthquake at 9:09 PM. I had heard that my friend, middle schooler Paul Callender-Clewett not only was playing violin in the orchestra, but also played and acted as the fiddler, opening and closing the show performing briefly on the roof top. I was pleased by Paul’s fine violin work and also by a superb performance by the entire group of actors, singers and dancers. It was great. They continue performances Fridays and Saturdays at 8 PM and Sunday afternoons at 2 PM through April 20. Now, I must tell you about myself. I have once again joined the Manhattan Beach Community Church for their musical production of How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying, a very funny show. Yes I play French horn in it along with a group of friends, some of whom have been doing these shows for about forty years. We have fun and also perform at that church Fridays and Saturdays at 8 PM and Sundays at 2 PM, concluding Sunday, April 13.
If one only knew how many additional community events our congregation involves itself in we would be surprised. Between youth sports, personal hobbies, special interest groups AND our church, we are, indeed, a busy bunch.
I also wish to compliment the participants and teachers of the Lenten series called What Wondrous Love, now in its fifth week of study. We see a video, are asked questions, make comments, pray and meditate during the week as well as Sundays when we hear a sermon on the subject by Pastor Molly. Perhaps eighty people are involved in this series. Ask us about it and learn what many of us think about it. Easter Sunday, the concluding event in this study, is bound to be more meaningful in our lives due to the beautiful art and thoughts now going on.

With support from your generous donations during last fall's capital campaign, our Trustees continue to make improvements to our campus, including some new doors, repaired exterior surfaces, and fresh paint.
On Palm Sunday, you're encouraged to take special notice of some of the changes:
The Children's Playground has been repainted, including the replacement of damaged doors.
Additionally, the Epworth Patio has been renovated, with new floor surface, fresh paint, a new grill area and new patio furniture--to make it a useful space for our youth to use (as they've mostly outgrown their existing space!!) On Palm Sunday, they will host an Open House to show off the improvements (and share their thanks)--they'll be serving up hot dogs after the Palm Sunday Donkey Processional and after 11:00 worship.

Welcome to our New Staff Member:
Church Custodian Arnie Sachs
Our Staff-Parish Relations Committee is pleased to share the news of our newest church staff member, Arnie Sachs. He is stepping into a new position, as Church Custodian; he handles many of the responsibilities previously held by our Facilities Manager. In addition, he is present on Sunday mornings during our services and Sunday School to help guide people and provide for safety.
Arnie is a familiar face to many, particularly because of his involvement as a volunteer with Shared Bread and with the Rummage Sale. He has been working with us on staff since he began part-time custodial work in December, stepping up into his current role about 3 weeks ago. Please help us welcome him!

Denim Quilt Workshop -
April 11 - 10 am-noon
Prayers and Squares (our prayer quilt ministry) is hosting a denim quilt workshop on Friday, April 11. Come learn a fun technique to make a frayed-edge denim blanket from old jeans; we will make one, together, and you can learn a skill to use on your own. You do not need to have sewing experience to participate--there is a job for everyone. You are encouraged to bring a pair of fabric-cutting scissors, and you are welcome to bring your sewing machine.
We also have quilts ready for prayers--if you would like to sponsor a free quilt for someone you know, we simply ask that you ask the recipient's permission, and then be here on a Sunday to help people tie knots and say prayers. Request forms are available in the church office or on our website.
