Sunday's Scripture:
Matthew 28:1-10
Matthew 28:1 Now after the Sabbath, as it began to dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came to see the tomb. 2 Behold, there was a great earthquake, for an angel of the Lord descended from the sky, and came and rolled away the stone from the door, and sat on it. 3 His appearance was like lightning, and his clothing white as snow. 4 For fear of him, the guards shook, and became like dead men. 5 The angel answered the women, “Don’t be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus, who has been crucified. 6 He is not here, for he has risen, just like he said. Come, see the place where the Lord was lying. 7 Go quickly and tell his disciples, ‘He has risen from the dead, and behold, he goes before you into Galilee; there you will see him.’ Behold, I have told you.”8 They departed quickly from the tomb with fear and great joy, and ran to bring his disciples word. 9 As they went to tell his disciples, behold, Jesus met them, saying, “Rejoice!”
They came and took hold of his feet, and worshiped him.
10 Then Jesus said to them, “Don’t be afraid. Go tell my brothers[a] that they should go into Galilee, and there they will see me.”
Footnotes:
a. Matthew 28:10 The word for “brothers” here may be also correctly translated “brothers and sisters” or “siblings.”

John Wesley's Notes-Commentary for
Matthew 28:1-10
Verse 2
[2] And, behold, there was a great earthquake: for the angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat upon it.
An angel of the Lord had rolled away the stone and sat upon it — St. Luke and St. John speak of two angels that appeared: but it seems as if only one of them had appeared sitting on the stone without the sepulchre, and then going into it, was seen with another angel, sitting, one where the head, the other where the feet of the body had lain.
Verse 6
[6] He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay.
Come, see the place where the Lord lay — Probably in speaking he rose up, and going before the women into the sepulchre, said, Come, see the place. This clearly reconciles what St. John relates, John 20:12, this being one of the two angels there mentioned.
Verse 7
[7] And go quickly, and tell his disciples that he is risen from the dead; and, behold, he goeth before you into Galilee; there shall ye see him: lo, I have told you.
There shall ye see him — In his solemn appearance to them all together. But their gracious Lord would not be absent so long: he appeared to them several times before then.
Lo, I have told you — A solemn confirmation of what he had said.
Verse 9
[9] And as they went to tell his disciples, behold, Jesus met them, saying, All hail. And they came and held him by the feet, and worshipped him.
Hail — The word in its primary sense means, "Rejoice:" in its secondary and more usual meaning, "Happiness attend you."
Verse 10
[10] Then said Jesus unto them, Be not afraid: go tell my brethren that they go into Galilee, and there shall they see me.
Go tell my brethren — I still own them as such, though they so lately disowned and forsook me.

Celebrating Resurrection
I'm looking forward to Easter. The smell of the lilies, the joyous expectation of kids searching for eggs, the bright trumpets, the full voices singing "Hallelujah!"I need reminders that death doesn't get the final word. It's felt like a rough couple of weeks--one of those seasons in life when too much of the news is hard. I think of the young people from LA who were killed in that horrific bus accident, even as they went on such a hope-filled trip to visit a college. I consider of the violence of hatred surrounding the shootings in Kansas City last weekend. I am reminded of the toll that preventable diseases like malaria continue to bear, especially among communities who have the fewest resources. I feel the grief of losses in my own life.
This is the world in which Christ's resurrection has power--not in a tidy world where things are pressed and fresh as a new Easter dress, but a messy world of pain and injustice and questions and loss. Jesus goes through death, and claims something more powerful.
Perhaps the reason our churches are likely to be so full this Sunday is that this news is too wild to believe, alone--we need other people to claim it with us, to dare to assure us that new life really is possible. To dance with us, and sing "Hallelujah!"
I hope to see you Sunday, and that you'll join me in welcoming our visitors and all who come in search of a hope bigger than our sorrows.
grace and peace,
Pastor Molly

Lay Looker by Bob Peterson
Easter Sunday has always been a bit of an important day for me, and probably for you. As a child we always wore our very best, and if we had anything new it was certainly worn. However, last Sunday's procession from the parking lot to the sanctuary was just plain outstanding. The portrayal of Jesus astride the donkey by one of our young men made that donkey, Jessie look downright small. It seemed like there were scores of children waving their leaves and then singing Hallelujah like it was going out of style. If you missed it, perhaps you saw the video and got to really appreciate the many children of our church. This Sunday I get to join a brass quartet at the 11:00 Am service, so we should bring a bit of extra excitement into the Easter service and, for me it's another day of meaningful family events and gatherings. After all, I heard one theologian tell us, without the Easter empty tomb followed by the risen Christ, there would be no Christianity. That alone is reason for joy and our widely held beliefs. Thanks to all in our church who make this special day so wonderful, and especially to Pastor Molly Vetter and all the staff.

The Youth are selling MOTHER'S DAY CARDS to support Imagine No Malaria!
The cards are $10 each--the cost of a life-saving bed net. You are invited to honor your mother, grandmother, aunt, friend and anyone who has helped "mother" you with this simple life-saving gift. The cards will be available on Sundays before Mother's Day.
Easter OfferingsDuring the Easter season, it is encouraging to see both new and familiar faces at our worship services. Throughout the year, many of you already support the congregation with your time, talent and financial contributions but greater participation is always welcome. We encourage you to look into our electronic giving program. It takes just a few minutes to setup a recurring giving plan through Realm (our new database system). Email the office for an invitation to Realm or visit the church website to download and complete a paper authorization form.
Strip-Piecing Quilt Workshop -
Saturday, May 17 - 10am-noon Prayers and Squares (our prayer quilt ministry) is hosting a quilt workshop on Saturday, May 17. Come learn a simple strip-piecing technique; we will make a prayer quilt together, and you can learn a skill to use on your own. You do not need to have sewing experience to participate--there is a job for everyone. You are encouraged to bring a rotary cutter, mat and rulers, as well as your sewing machine.
Thanks to some generous fabric donations, we also have fabric that you can use to sew a quilt top on your own. Contact Pastor Molly to help.
We also have quilts ready for prayers--
if you would like to sponsor a free quilt for someone you know, we simply ask that you ask the recipient's permission, and then be here on a Sunday to help people tie knots and say prayers. Request forms are available in the church office or on our website.

We are happy to report that we have a new dishwasher in our church kitchen! This past Wednesday night, as our faithful dishwashing volunteers tried it out, everyone was all smiles. We even prayed a blessing on the new washer, grateful that it helps us clean up every week as we serve a meal through Shared Bread, living the love of Christ in our community.
