Sunday's Scripture:
Micah 7:1-6
Micah 7: Stick Around to See What God Will Do
1-6 I’m overwhelmed with sorrow!
sunk in a swamp of despair!
I’m like someone who goes to the garden
to pick cabbages and carrots and corn
And returns empty-handed,
finds nothing for soup or sandwich or salad.
There’s not a decent person in sight.
Right-living humans are extinct.
They’re all out for one another’s blood,
animals preying on each other.
They’ve all become experts in evil.
Corrupt leaders demand bribes.
The powerful rich
make sure they get what they want.
The best and brightest are thistles.
The top of the line is crabgrass.
But no longer: It’s exam time.
Look at them slinking away in disgrace!
Don’t trust your neighbor,
don’t confide in your friend.
Watch your words,
even with your spouse.
Neighborhoods and families are falling to pieces.
The closer they are—sons, daughters, in-laws—
The worse they can be.
Your own family is the enemy.

John Wesley's Notes-Commentary:
Micah 7:1-6
Verse 1
[1] Woe is me! for I am as when they have gathered the summer fruits, as the grapegleanings of the vintage: there is no cluster to eat: my soul desired the firstripe fruit.
Woe is me — The land is brought in complaining, that whereas it was once well stored, now it hath few good in it.
As the grape-gleanings — In Israel and Judah, which in bringing forth good men, should have been a fruitful vine full of clusters: just, compassionate and humble men, are as grapes after the vintage is gathered.
Desired — But in vain.
Verse 3
[3] That they may do evil with both hands earnestly, the prince asketh, and the judge asketh for a reward; and the great man, he uttereth his mischievous desire: so they wrap it up.
Both hands — With all diligence.
The great man — The great man at court, who can do what he will there.
Uttereth — Is bold to speak plainly.
Desire — His unjust, oppressive design.
They — They all jointly promote violence and cruelty.
Verse 4
[4] The best of them is as a brier: the most upright is sharper than a thorn hedge: the day of thy watchmen and thy visitation cometh; now shall be their perplexity.
As a briar — Mischievous and hurtful.
The day — The day in which they shall sound the alarm.
Cometh — Surely, speedily, and unavoidably.
Now — When that day is come.

Lessons and StoriesWe started a series of sermons whose main ideas are taken from "The Jungle Book" (as written by Rudyard Kipling and Disney...)
These stories of Mowgli are enchanting--stories that tell of a young human raised in the jungle, assisted and threatened by the wild animals around him. In the creatures of the jungle, we see some of the challenges and blessings of the communities in which we live. The themes of this story connect to themes that run deep in our scriptural tradition, as well.
So, whether you remember every word and song of the classic 1964 Disney film or not, I hope you will enjoy these weeks as we think about what those stories have to say about our stories, and about our shared story of God.
Our kids have begun meeting for a special summertime Sunday School, starting at 10am each week; they're using the same lessons and stories we are, and helping make preparations for our own BeachFaith Kids production of the "Jungle Book" on August 10. This Theatre Arts camp is a new adventure for our church, as we seek to offer even more meaningful ministry to the young people of our community. Please keep it in your prayers!
grace and peace,
Pastor Molly
We continue our summer worship schedule this Sunday, with services at 8:30 and 10:30. This Sunday, Rev. Transformation
"This word has been on my mind quite a bit recently. Maybe part
of the reason is that July marks the one-year anniversary of my brother's death and I consider death to be a type of transformation. When Nelson Mandela died back in December, a news story quoted a woman saying that she (and a lot of Africans) celebrated not only his life but also his death because he was transforming to another, better life. I don't remember the exact story but I recall the reference to death not being the end but a new beginning and it should it be celebrated too. Despite the sadness I felt (and still feel) over the loss of my brother, I try to recognize the transformation aspect of his death and celebrate it when I find myself missing him.Transformation has been on my mind for other reasons too. Transformation by Johnna Kosnoff
This word has been on my mind quite a bit recently. Maybe part of the reason is that July marks the one-year anniversary of my brother’s death and I consider death to be a type of transformation. When Nelson Mandela died back in December, a news story quoted a woman saying that she (and a lot of Africans) celebrated not only his life but also his death because he was transforming to another, better life. I don’t remember the exact story but I recall the reference to death not being the end but a new beginning and it should it be celebrated too. Despite the sadness I felt (and still feel) over the loss of my brother, I try to recognize the transformation aspect of his death and celebrate it when I find myself missing him.
Transformation has been on my mind for other reasons too. I think of my son, Kyle, who is now looking at universities throughout the country and wonder how will all of this upcoming change transform him? How will it transform me? How will it transform our family? Will it actually transform us or will we just adapt and survive the change?
I think of Caroline as she starts her next journey and wonder what will be the result of these changes for her? What about Linda and Jeanette? I think of our congregation and how many changes we are experiencing. Will the changes transform us into something even closer to God’s image?
Our July issue of Alive Now* happens to focus on transformation, as well. On page 6, Flora Slosson Wuellner compares change and transformation this way: “Change refers to adaptation, reaction, without necessarily involving any newness of being. Transformation implies new being, a new creative energy flowing from the center which acts with creative power upon surrounding events.”
A few weeks ago I wrote about change not being so difficult when we know God is at work in that change. However, I want to do more than just react, adapt and survive change. I desire that God wield the change to transform my soul into more of His image. I hope it’s with new “creative energy” and “creative power” flowing from and surrounding me, as Wuellner suggests.
I pray that each of us will open our hearts and our minds (and even our Methodist doors) to allow God to use the changes in our lives to transform us with new creative energy and power flowing among us. I have high expectations with uplifted hope.
*Current issues of “Alive Now” are available in the entryway near the sanctuary.

Staff Search Committee Updates
Our Staff-Parish Relations Committee has been hard at work over
the past months, working at filling leadership openings. We are pleased to share a quick status report:-We are pleased to announce that we have hired two Theatre Arts Interns, Emily Horowitz and Rachel Perlot. Each will help with different aspects of our BeachFaith Kids Theatre Arts Camp and the production of Jungle Book that will be part of it. Funding for these short-term summer positions came through the camp fees paid by participations.
-We have been overwhelmed by a wealth of amazing applicants for Music Director. Our Search Committee has begun to narrow the list of candidates, as we discern who to invite for interviews.
-We have begun to receive more applicants for Youth Director, and encourage you to continue to help us get the word out about this opening. We hope to begin to review applications as a committee at the end of July.
-We in contact with candidates, hoping to find an Interim Organist, with hopes that our new Music Director can be involved in the hire of our next regular organist in coming months.

A note from Caroline...
Dear Church Family,I am still overwhelmed by the incredible love that you all shared with me last Sunday. I'm not sure there are words to describe how special that day was for me. I will hold all of it in my heart forever. Thank you to all who helped prepare, orchestrate, and decorate. Thank you to all of you who came to share in the day. Most of all, thank you to each of you for being a part of this beautiful church community; you've all touched my life. I love this church.
I am so comforted by the immediate future. There is an incredible team--a team I've been dreaming of for years, that will keep the youth group strong and healthy while the SPRC (the committee that hires staff) is collecting and reviewing applications. The team is comprised of youth volunteers and a few youth and it will meet regularly temporarily fill the youth leader role, and then help a new person transition well.
All of the folks on this team have gifts for youth leadership, and a passion to see this ministry continue to be shaped and nurtured. Earnie Neagle is heading up the team that will share leadership responsibilities. Meagan Burrows will be handling the communication between the leadership, families, and the congregation.
Until we meet again, I pray this:
May the Lord bless you and keep you, may the Lord make his face to shine upon you and be gracious unto you. May the Lord lift up His countenance upon you, and give you peace.
Caroline
