Dear Resurrection Family,
Today and tomorrow is our annual United Methodist Women's Rummage Sale. Our Student Center and east wing of our east building at the Leawood Campus are teaming with bargains - bicycles, furniture, children's items, knick knacks, electronics all donated by Resurrection members and selling cheap! The proceeds of the sale benefit mission projects locally and around the world.
In addition, tomorrow we have our annual car show taking place at the Leawood Campus. It's a blast with food, fellowship and great cars of all eras on display. Invite a friend or neighbor to join you for the car show. Do you, or a friend or neighbor, have a car you'd like to enter into the show? It's not too late. Register here or simply show up with the car tomorrow morning. The show starts at 9:00 am and ends at 1:00 pm.
Speaking of the car show, when we think of those cars built in the 1960's, we don't call them "antiques," instead they are called "classics." Tomorrow is my birthday and I'm turning 50 - not an antique, just a classic. J This weekend I'll preach about "Life's Two Halves." We'll look at wisdom for those who are in the first half of life from those in the second half. We'll look at what insights the Bible offers us on the journey our lives take from youth to senior adult. And, we'll look at the opportunities and challenges of our second half of life. The sermon will include humor, research on aging, results of a survey we did this week with those over 50 (thank you to the 2,000+ people who took the survey) and examples from the Bible on how our first half of life prepares us for an even more important second half of life.
To celebrate at Leawood we'll have Tippin's Pie and Sheridan's Custard in the Narthex following each worship service. We want to encourage you to stick around and enjoy a treat and time of fellowship following worship. Each campus will have some kind of treat following worship.
Just a reminder that the deadline for the Early Bird Registration rate for the Willow Creek Leadership Summit is upon us. You won't want to miss this exciting and life changing leadership event. We are excited to once again host the Willow Creek Leadership Summit at The Church of the Resurrection, Leawood Campus Sanctuary, August 14/15, 8:30am-4:30pm. We bring this world-class training to our own church because we believe every person is a leader in one way or another. This leadership event is geared toward helping you become a better leader at home, at work and in your volunteer efforts in both the church and in the community. The lineup of well-known speakers and topics has the potential to inspire, transform, refresh and equip leaders at all levels.
The deadline is approaching for the great discounted rate our members receive. Register at www.cor.org/willow. Resurrection Members and Regular Attendees receive a deeply discounted rate of $79 through July 15th. Use the Password: LEAD14HS to receive the discounted rate. After this date you can still register but at a Higher rate, don't miss out on this great learning event.
On Monday I'm leaving for Turkey with two of our videographers to retrace the life of the Apostle Paul in the places where he lived, walked, preached and wrote 13 of the 27 books of our New Testament. We'll have local experts guiding us and, we're filming in each location for a fall sermon series I'm preaching a series in September and October titled, "The Call: The Life and Message of the Apostle Paul." During those sermons I'll take you, via video clips, to the archaeological ruins of the ancient cities of Pisidian Antioch, Collosae, Laodicea, Philippi, Thessalonica, Athens, Corinth and Rome.
The filming and travel is funded by the Lilly Clergy Renewal grant received last year by our church and by Abingdon Press and Educational Opportunities. The sermons I preach here at Resurrection and the clips we film in Turkey, Greece and Italy will become a book and small group video resource that will be published in May of 2015 with anticipated use by more than 10,000 churches.
During the next few weeks I'll be speaking to you from Turkey and Greece to give you a sneak peak at the fall sermons with a short video in worship showing you where we've been that week. We'll also have some awesome guest preachers in worship who I know you will want to hear. We'll share more about them in worship this weekend.
I'm looking forward to this weekend as we look at the two halves of life and share together a time of fellowship and treats following worship!
See you this weekend,
Adam
