From Isaiah's "God's word shall not return empty" to Jesus' "Let anyone who has ears, listen!" to this hymn's "Open your ears, O faithful people" come invitations to deepen our faith, for faith comes through hearing God's word. We have a chatty God (Deus loquens) who desires a listening people. May that be us!
Even while we listen, we are moved to proclaim so that others also will hear. Singing this simple and repetitive text over and over again while quickening the pace each time feels like a holy whirling dervish in which we get caught up in the aural/oral rhythm of worship and the ecstatic praise of an abundant, active, and animated God. Hallelujah!
Open our ears, O faithful God. Open our ears to hear your word. Amen.
