Hi folks,
Thoughts for Chapter 6 part 1.
This week we will focus on crucifixion and burial. Next week we will take on the rest of the chapter.
1. We get our basic understanding/picture of the crucifixion from the gospels and from art. In recent years, study and new findings have modified that picture. What is your understanding of the way it was carried out? Has your image of the crucifixion changes over the years?
2. Why was the idea of not being buried so repulsive to the Jews?  Is it repulsive to you? Is cremation the same as being buried as far was respectful treatment of the body goes?
3. In addition to not being buried, bodies of the crucified were ravaged by birds and beasts.  How does that play into the desire for burial?
4. On pp. 172-178  Crossan talks about the burial of Jesus. Let’s talk a bit about the transition he sees from no burial at all, to complete ritual burial.
See you Sunday,
