"VBS moments"
I have had many wonderful opportunities this summer to hear some beautiful statements of faith by the youngest disciples among us. From Vacation Bible School, to children leading in worship as liturgists, Elementary Camp to Sunday morning Children’s ministries, it has been a gift to watch children grow in their faith and in their love of God! I’d like to share one of these moments with you:
At Vacation Bible School in mid-July, there was one day when we were learning that even when we do not understand, Jesus loves us! Pastor Craig and I got to lead the Bible Story station, and the story for this day was Jesus washing the disciples’ feet (this may sound familiar to you – we had the same sermon topic in worship on July 13th!)
During the Bible Story station time, the team leaders for each group of VBS children washed the feet of the kids in their group. The kids loved it! After they finished, Pastor Craig asked the kids, “What were you thinking about when someone was washing your feet?” We got some of the answers that you might expect. I’m pretty sure one little girl said she was thinking about rainbows J. But one little boy, probably in Kindergarten, said something amazing and moving all at once. He said, “It was like Jesus was washing my feet.”
This was so powerful to hear spoken by a little boy, with sincerity and wonder in his eyes. What an incredible moment, and a witness of how God is at work in the hearts of little ones. I’m not sure we could/would have articulated our experience quite as clearly. We might have been embarrassed, or self-conscious instead. It was such a change in perspective, such a beautiful expression of faith, to listen to this little boy who experienced the love of Jesus in that moment. And because he shared his experience, others experienced that love as well. Praise be to God for moments like this!(Reverend Jessica Strysko, Pastor of Missions and Family Ministry)
