The United Methodist Church of the Resurrection Downtown Enote from Pastor Scott Chrostek for Friday, 18 July 2014

The United Methodist Church of the Resurrection Downtown Enote from Pastor Scott Chrostek for Friday, 18 July 2014
Greetings RezDowntowners!
It’s great to be writing you this Friday as it marks the kick-off weekend to a new sermon series at Resurrection Downtown. Beginning this weekend I’ll begin a sermon series called, “Are You Listening?”  We’ll be focusing on the Book of Samuel and the story of how God used Samuel to move Israel into the future filled with hope and promise.  The story of Samuel is a story that centers upon God’s redemptive power to transform darkness into light and barrenness into life, but it all centers on our ability to listen to God’s leading.  I hope you’ll invite friends to join us in worship this weekend. Here’s a quick video for you to check out and share with your friends.

In addition to our upcoming sermon series, we have a lot going on in the life of our church.  Tonight our YUP’s (Young and UnProfessionals) will be heading out to Crown Center to watch the Free Friday Night Flick, The Sandlot.  Then on Saturday morning we’ll be hosting another Faithwork Saturday from 9am to Noon. Faithwork is one of the best places to invite friends and neighbors to join us in transforming this city by putting our faith to work.  I can’t think of a better way to kick off the weekend.  This Saturday we’ll be heading out to places like Crossroads Academy, Rose Brooks, Community LINC, and of course we’ll have opportunities for knitting upstairs!  Lastly, this weekend is the last weekend for you to sign up for our RezDowntown Golf Tournament.  If you want to play some golf, meet new people, introduce some of your golfing friends to RezDowntown and experience one of the city’s best and most historic courses, come on out and register to play!  It will be a ton of fun to be sure!
Every time I sit down to write this letter I can’t help but think about what a great privilege it is to be serving alongside of all of you in Kansas City.  I am thankful for you and I’m excited to be able to spend the weekend with you serving, worshiping and enjoying the best parts of this community all to the glory of God!

The movie starts at 9 pm, and we will meet at the fountains at 8:15 pm. Bring a blanket or lawn chair—and a friend!  Wednesday, July 23 – at 7 pm, join us for a dinner night out at Johnny’s in the Power & Light District (1310 Grand Blvd.). July FaithWork – It is time again for our morning of service to the local community. Taking place the third Saturday of the month, our next FaithWork is this Saturday, July 19. All you need to do is show up at 1522 McGee at 9 am wearing clothes that can get dirty and we will send you out to serve. This month’s opportunities include Crossroads Academy, a new downtown charter school; Community Linc, which provides transitional housing for families; an on-site knitting project for those who knit or would like to learn; and more. Come on out and invite a friend! Contact Todd.Maberry@rezdowntown.org for questions.
Ready to Shop for School Supplies?  Yes, it’s that time of year again!  Resurrection Downtown has made a difference in the heart of the city by supplying many of our mission partners with school supplies. This year, we will be assisting Wendell Phillips, Crossroads Academy, Rose Brooks, ReStart, Healing House and maybe a few more.  Would you be willing to grab a sack along with the school supply list and bless a child this school year?  The bags need to be returned by August 3, 2014.  You’ll make a big difference in the lives of the littlest ones!
Register Now for the Resurrection Downtown Golf Tournament. Grab your clubs or we’ll get you a loaner set! Our 2nd Annual Golf “Fun”raiser Tournament is next weekend, Saturday, July 26, 8 am at the gorgeous Swope Memorial Golf Course. For $65 you get a cart, golf and lunch! Last year was a blast and we saw many new faces as lots of friends and family came out to play. Registration forms are available at the Connection Point. You can also download the form at rezdowntown.org/golffun. Don’t miss out – register today so we can put together the teams and plan all the “golf fun!” For questions, contact Mike Maasen at mjmaasen@gmail.com.
SWAT (Singles with a Twist) is having their next Lunch’n Learn. Join other singles (approx. 35 and up) as they discuss the Five Love Languages. On Sunday, July 27 at 12:30pm in the loft at 1522 McGee, you will learn about the Five Love Languages, take the official profile to determine what your personal love languages are, and discuss how we can use this insight to make all of our relationships better. Keeping with the theme of love, let's test our creativity and bring food with a twist of red or pink (if possible). For more information contact either Gina Bowman, ginab@kc.rr.com; Renae Gonner, rgonner@ermarketing.net or Philip Krause, pnkrause@pnkrause.com.
Mission Service Trip in Omaha – Rez Downtown is piloting a mission service trip to Omaha, Neb., Sept. 18-21. The trip is for those who are interested in issues of poverty and social justice and want experience in serving with and for the poor. The team will be touring and serving in local organizations that address poverty, working in a community garden, eating in a community café, worshipping in a multicultural setting and much more. The total cost for the trip is $200, and the application deadline is July 31. The trip is limited to 10 people, so please sign up soon. Applications can be picked up at Connection Point, or email Todd.Maberry@cor.org.
Save the Date!  Won’t You Be My Neighbor?  Wednesday, August 6 at 7pm at 1522 McGee, find out who lives near you and attends Resurrection.  We have many Resurrection folks asking the question, literally, “Who is my neighbor?”  A program has been developed to help you get to know and build relationships with others who live in your area and also attend our church.  Look for more information about this great community building event!
I am so blessed to be a part of this community and I am so proud to serve Christ with you in this city.  I am so thankful to be a part of such a dynamic and life-giving community of people like you.  I'm looking forward to seeing you in worship this weekend, but until then, have a great and God-filled weekend!
Grace and Peace,
Scott
