Dear Friends,
Good news: the mission box offering for the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge was $5,461.  You can still donate; make your check out to Trinity UMC and designate it "ALS" or ALS Ice Bucket Challenge.
We had what I believe was an historic meeting last night at our Church Council.  We voted unanimously to enter a "Covenant Agreement" to engage Local Missions on the East side of Gainesville in a dynamic and unique way. Trinity, a primarily Anglo congregation
(though gaining increasing diversity), and Mt. Pleasant UMC, a primarily African American congregation will come together to do something very special here in Gainesville around the Faith Mission (formerly Faith UMC),  near the corner of NE 39th Ave and NE 15th Street.  In a day where racial tensions can become intense and out of control, our two churches are given the opportunity to create a brand new vision of how people can come together for a common cause.  We will keep you posted as things develop, but for now would you give thanks and pray for this exciting opportunity to be in mission right here in our city?
Five more things:
1.  If you've not yet taken Disciple Bible Study 1, II or IV, or Christian Believer, now would be a great time to do so.  These 34 week classes begin Sept. 2, so sign up today at this link .
2.  We need someone to lead our Fall session of Financial Peace University.  Will you let me know today if you can do this?   We can offer it whatever time works best for you.  Thanks.
3.  Our Chef, Franny, is throwing a celebration party - for all of you who volunteer in any way at Trinity - a dinner on Wednesday, September 3, at 5:30.  The key to Trinity's success is YOU, and we want to thank you; just let us know you are coming here .
4.  Trinity's Choirs need YOU!  Consider joining Chalice (our 8:15 choir) or Chancel (our 11:00 choir).  Chalice practices at 7:00 on Tuesdays and Chancel practices on Thursdays at 7:00; there is Childcare provided for both. 
5.  Confirmation for 6th graders begins September 14.  If you have a sixth grader, I hope you will encourage her or him in this important step in their spiritual journey.  Please contact Julie if you have any questions, or join her for the 'what is confirmation' class on the 14th in the youth building to kick off this experience.
Finally, in light of this past Sunday's sermon on gaining wisdom by numbering our days, someone shared this powerful quote with me from Steve Jobs:
"Remembering that I'll be dead soon is the most important tool I've ever encountered to help me make the big choices in life.
Almost everything--all external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure--these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important.
Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart.

Associate Pastors 
A Word from Rev. Esther:  As I contemplate on ways to share what God has done in my life, in the life of the Church, and throughout history, especially with those who have either never heard of this God, have experienced hurt as to how God has been presented, or simply have lots of questions, I'm thankful for the existence of the Alpha Course in our midst.  I encourage you if you know anyone who may resonate with any of these to invite them to check it out.  We're exploring a new, shortened format this go-round, starting September 30.  Be on the lookout for more information or go to our website to find out more or to register.  Another place and group I'm particularly thankful for is the 6:35 service on Wednesday nights in the chapel; tomorrow we'll be looking at 'Confession and Communion' as we continue our series on 'comm(unity): messy, beautiful, life together.'  Blessed week -- praying for you!
A Word from Rev. Aaron:  I don't know about you, but my family and I are still in the "adjustment phase" of being back to school. Please know that all of you (students, parents, and educators in particular) are in my thoughts and prayers. Reminder - since it is Labor Day weekend, Sonlight will not be singing this Sunday morning, nor will we be holding rehearsal in the afternoon.

Missions
This week's mission box supports the Florida United Methodist Children's Home new Madison Youth Ranch.  The Ranch in Madison is now open and is and will continue to be a sanctuary for children in need of love and support; be it two days or twenty years. Let's continue to help empower children and families to experience God's love and care as revealed in the ministry of Jesus Christ.Trinity is once again partnering with Alachua Habitat for Humanity and other local churches to build a third Interfaith House.  This home will be built for a needy family at 1027 NW 31st Avenue and on September 27 we will have the opportunity to volunteer with the start up.  Please save this date.   Contact Jan at for further information.
We need your help! Do you have old fabric that you're not using?  We have a group of ladies here at Trinity that are sewing Little Dresses For Africa.  If you would like to donate your fabric please drop it by the Mission Office or if you are interested in learning more please contact Jeannine Cawthon at (352) 375-2349 or email here

Youth Ministry
Sign Up here- Rock the Universe - We still have a few spots left for Rock the Universe!! We will be hitting the rides at Islands of Adventure and Universal all day on September 6th, then rocking out all night to some of the biggest names in Christian music, including Switchfoot, tobyMac, Family Force Five, and more! Cost is $120 and the extended sign-up deadline is this Wednesday, August 27. 
Small Groups start this week! High school girls' small group and middle school boys' small groups start this Wednesday. Middle school girls' small group starts this Thursday.
Waffle Cone Wednesday returns this week! Meet us at the TCBY in Thornebrook this Wednesday at 3 PM for free ice cream and fellowship.
Moe's and a Movie - Meet us at the Moe's on Newberry Rd. by the movie theater after Sunday School for lunch, and then we'll catch a showing of Ghostbusters at the theater next door at 1:15 PM! Drop-off at Moe's, pick-up at the movies. See you then!

Children's Ministries
Attention parents of Kindergarten through 5th graders:  All elementary children will participate in K5 Worship next Sunday, August 31.  Please meet in rooms 228/229 for both the 9:40 and 11:00 hours.  The preschoolers' schedule/classrooms will remain the same.
CHEERS begins September 3!
  Children in grades Kindergarten through 5th are invited to be a part of this fun, mid-week program on Wednesdays from 4:00-5:30.  Join us for fun science experiments, cooking, crafty creations, games, dancing, recreation and singing!  On-line registration is now open click here.
Would you like your child baptized?  Baptism is one of the two sacraments in the United Methodist Church.  All parents are asked to participate in a Baptism Orientation prior to the baptism of their child.  The next Baptism Orientation will be held Sunday, Sept. 7th at 11:00 am in the Children's Ministries Office (Room E108). 
Join us for "Pajama Movie Night" at our next Parent's Night Out on Friday, September 12, from 5:30-8:30!  It will be a fabulous night of wearing your favorite pj's, watching a terrific movie, eating pizza and participating in fun activities!   PNO is for ages 12 months - 5th grade; cost is $12 per child with a $30 cap per family.  Please  register and pay on-line  by Wednesday, September 10 .  For questions contact McCall Griggs or 416-3014.
Bible Exploration3rd Grade Bible Presentation is Sunday, September 14 at 9:40. If you are a parent of a 3rd grader and have not yet received a letter, please register no later than August 31.  If you are in 4th grade or 5th grade and did not receive a bible, please email Machelle.  We want everyone to have the opportunity to receive a bible from Trinity!
Rejoice registration is underway.  Rejoice is a musical program for elementary aged children Kindergarten - 5th grade.  Rejoice meets on Wednesday afternoons from 2:00 - 4:00.  The children will learn a musical including singing, dancing, drama and more.  This Fall we will be doing the production "Arkeology" (Noah's Ark told by the animals).  Go online and sign up today  or contact Susan Kovi for more information.   

Adult Ministries
Tuesday Morning Moms will begin on September 2 (9:30 - 11:30; rm E203/204).  They will be studying Children of the Day by Beth Moore.  Workbooks are NOW available at the Trinity Bookstore for $18.  Childcare is available.
Joint Ventures will resume Sunday, September 7 (NEW TIME - 11 am; rm E222) and will begin a study called The 5 Love Languages.  This group is for couples who are contemplating marriage, engaged, recently married or married for years who desire to have Christ as the chief cornerstone in their lives. 
Women Growing in Faith will begin on September 9 (6:30 - 8:30 pm; rm 232).  They will be studying Faith, Abundant, True.  Workbooks are NOW available at the Trinity Bookstore for $15.Deepen your knowledge of the Biblical story and Christian Beliefs!  Disciple presents the overview of God's relationship with human beings and Christian Believer presents how humans have come to understand who God is and who we are in relation to God.  Time is running out to sign up for these great studies!
Disciple I is a dynamic and powerful 34-week overview of the Biblical story (book $40).
Disciple II is a dynamic and powerful 32-week study of Genesis-Exodus and Luke-Acts  (book $40).
Disciple IV is a 32-week in depth study of the Writings, The Gospel of John, and Revelation (books $40).
Christian Believer is a 30-week study of Christian beliefs and is about "knowing God with heart and mind." (book $45)
All three classes meet on Tuesdays beginning September 2 at 7 pm.  An afternoon class of Disciple I is also offered on Sundays.  Register online for any of these courses. 

General Announcements
Boy Scout Troop 454 - If you have a boy in 6th grade or older who is interested in camping, community service, character building and learning leadership skills you may want to visit our troop meetings for further information.  Boy Scout Troop 454 meets every Monday night (except school holidays) in the Youth Building from 7:30-9pm. If you need further information please call Curtis Kirby at 316-1406.
Trinity member, Fred Korzec, will teach the AARP Smart Driver Course in a one day session convenient for Trinity United Methodist Church members in the Education Bldg. Rm. 222 on Thursday, August 28.  This classroom refresher for motorists age 50 and older is offered for a modest fee and you do not have to be an AARP member to register for the class. For course registration call Mrs. Lynda LeGrow at (352) 333-3036.
SEE, SNAP, SHOW: Discover Trinity Photo Day, September 7
after each worship service we will meet at the following times, 9:15, 10:40 and 12 noon. Bring your camera to SEE and SNAP photos in just one area like the Memorial Garden or venture further to the Youth Building or the cool, green Jim Nolan Trail. Wear walking shoes. We'll have maps for your self-guided tour or guides to get you started. Some (limited) golf cart transport.  We need more folks to help.  E-mail to volunteer an hour or less.
"Let me care for you".  Those words can bring a sigh of relief to people going through difficult times in life.  A Stephen Minister is willing and able to care for you by listening and being there while you work through this tough time.  If this is the kind of care for you, call Kay Walker at 336-2006 or Tom Sklens at 384-1807 for more information.

   Volunteer Opportunities 
  • If you want to volunteer but don't see anything that interests you, contact Susan Kovi.  Susan can help you help Trinity!          
  • Communion Stewards are still needed for all three Sunday services - especially the 9:40 and 11:00 services.  No experience is needed.  Volunteers may help as they are available.  No short or long term commitment.  Please contact Pam Goad or Chuck Goad.
