Weekly eNote from Pastor Scott - Friday, 29 May 2015 The United Methodist Church of the Resurrection Downtown of Kansas City, Missouri, United States
Greetings RezDowntowners,
I hope this message finds you doing well and enjoying what’s left of a short week thanks to Memorial Day. I am really excited about this coming weekend in worship as we’ll be kicking off a new sermon series on God and Baseball called, Take Me Out to the Ballgame. Herbert Hoover said, “Next to religion, baseball has furnished a greater impact on American life than any other institution.” When you think about baseball is a simple game, you can either throw the ball, catch the ball or hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, and sometimes it rains.'
And yet this simple game draws thousands daily to attend, watch and cheer regardless of the weather, winning or losing. When questioned about the game’s simplicity and draw, Ernie Harwell, famed baseball announcer said, “Baseball? Just a game, as simple as a ball and a bat. And yet as complex as the American spirit it symbolizes. A sport, business and sometimes almost even a religion.” There’s just something about the game of baseball and its many layers that allows us to experience something bigger, remember our childhood, converse with friends, all while building up a sense of community all throughout the city.
It seems like the Kansas City Royals are proof of this. With their recent trip to the World Series as American League Champs, the whole city is buzzing with what they might do this year. All throughout the city you can overhear conversations concerning how our guys are doing. My hope is that by taking a look at this game for the next four weeks, we might take this as an opportunity to find a deeper sense of meaning in it beyond the game. Regardless of your affinity for this game, my hope is that you’ll join us this weekend as we look at Baseball as a way of finding lessons that inform our faith. I’ll be preaching live a message entitled, “For Love of the Game.”
