Weekly eNote from Senior Pastor Adam Hamilton from The Resurrection United Methodist Church of Leawood, Kansas, United States for Friday, 29 May 2015
Dear Resurrection Family,
I hope you are staying dry on this soggy Friday! This week has been a great beginning to our summer at Resurrection. We had 19 college students join our staff as summer interns. These are some of brightest young people you’ll ever meet, and it’s so exciting to see them exploring ministry as a career. They’ll be serving in ministries at all four campuses. Welcome them and get to know them if you get a chance. While our intern program allows us to expand our summer ministry, it is primarily aimed at mentoring young adults who are considering a call to ordained ministry or who will serve as lay leaders in churches in the years ahead.
We’re gearing up for a whole host of opportunities to worship, learn, serve and share fellowship this summer! Some churches scale back what they do during the summer. At Resurrection we increase opportunities for you to grow in your faith, to fellowship with others in the church, and to be involved in serving others. We’ve got a lot of great things planned for the next three months. If you are out of town for travel, join us online for worship on the weekend. When you are in town, it’s a great time to try something new – take a class, serve in the community, and have fun getting to know others in our congregation. All of our campuses have special Destination Resurrection opportunities for you. Take a look at the website: www.cor.org/destination and mark you calendars.
In worship this weekend, we’re kicking off a new sermon series – Take Me Out to the Ballgame: Lessons from Baseball on the Christian Life. Pastor Scott is leading off the series at Leawood, Downtown and Blue Springs (Pastor Jason is leading the series at West). Kansas City has baseball fever, and I know you have friends who are baseball fans. Bring someone with you to worship this weekend who hasn’t been to church in a while. This series of message could be life-changing. Wear your favorite baseball jersey to worship and join us! I’d like to ask you to take a look at the video promo and then to post it to your Facebook or Twitter account inviting people to join you for worship. Click here to view the promo, then copy the link and include it in your FB or Twitter posts.
A Church Conference has been called for Tuesday, June 2, at 6 pm in Room B-200 (Leawood Campus.) This special called Church Conference (something we typically have at our All Church Gathering) is for the purpose of approving two candidates for ministry, Darryl Burton and Mark Maschger (in the United Methodist Church local congregations must officially vote to approve and recommend candidates for ordained ministry which is what you’ll be invited to do on the 2nd) and to vote upon our Staff Parish Relations Committee’s recommendations for my 2015-2016 compensation package, as well as the housing allowances for our other pastors. Each year you as a congregation formally vote upon my compensation as one way among many of seeking to ensure transparency and integrity in our finances here at the church.
This August 6-7, Resurrection will once again be a host site for the Willow Creek Global Leadership Summit at both our Leawood Campus and Blue Springs Campus. This is an important leadership event aimed at helping you become a better leader in your workplace, in your home and in the church and community. There is a great line up of well-known speakers including Ed Catmull, President of Pixar and Disney Animation Studios and author of Creativity Inc., best-selling author and researcher Brene Brown Craig Groechel from Life Church.tv and Jim Collins, author of multiple books on leadership including his best-selling, Good to Great. We are able to offer registration to our members and regular attendees for $89 through July 7th. The rate increases to $119 after July 7. To learn more about the Summit and to register, visit cor.org/willow. Use the Password:GLS15HOST to receive the reduced rate.
On the Leawood campus, Vacation Bible Camp begins June 8 and we still have a few positions to fill for classroom leaders. We specifically need: 3 adults in 3rd grade, 1 in 2nd grade, 2 in Kindergarten, and 2 in nursery. If you are an adult (18 and older) you could have an awesome week and a great chance to make a difference in a child’s life. Contact Stacey.Furey@cor.orgto help.
I’m in the office part of this coming week, but will be speaking in Grand Rapids, Michigan to the West Michigan Annual Conference next Friday and Saturday. The following week I’ll be speaking in Iowa and Florida. Please continue to pray for these pastors and churches, and if you picked up one of the notecards, don’t forget to send your note of encouragement.
I just received an e-mail from a friend that included her pastors note. I thought you would enjoy reading this:
"This year's Iowa United Methodist Annual Conference will be held June 6-9. Rev. Adam Hamilton, one of the pastors at Church of the Resurrection in Leawood, Kansas, will be providing teaching sessions during Conference. Earlier this week, I received cards in the mail from two members of Church of the Resurrection letting me know that they were praying for me and for our congregation during the weeks leading up to and following Conference.
I found it humbling, comforting, and - honestly - a bit unnerving to know someone is praying for us. Why would someone we don't know pray for us? What are they praying about? And, what if God listens to them!? Mostly though, as I've been thinking about it these last couple days, I have found myself feeling deeply appreciative.
So, I'm inviting you to join me in returning the gesture. For the next 30 days I will be praying for Jamie, for Greg, and the people at Church of the Resurrection. And, I hope you will too. (The cards that Jamie and Greg sent are posted on the bulletin board in Kenyon Hall.)"
How cool is that Resurrection?! Your notes make a difference as you join me in praying for the pastors and churches I will be speaking to this summer. I am deeply grateful for each of you!
In Christ’s love,
Adam
