Hope United Methodist Church in San Diego, California, United States' Calendar and Times of Hope from Reverend Brian Kent for Wednesday, 8 June 2016 "Hope United Methodist Church keeps an online calendar right here: http://www.mychurchevents.com/calendar/calendar.aspx?ci=g1i3f0o9m7k5g1g1" …so that it can always be as up to date as the info you give to the office. With as many groups as we have here, a monthly calendar would never be up to date. So check out this link for your groups. ATTENTION ALL SINGERS AND BAKERS: CHRISTMAS IN JULY??
SINGERS ...
This is YOUR chance! If you rarely (or ever) get to sing a solo in church or share your gifts in a small group, now you can!
The Christmas in July event is an opportunity for you as a member of the music ministry or a new singer in our church to perform the
Christmas music you've always wanted to, but were never given the opportunity. Great ballads from those beloved Christmas CD's, while you're decorating the tree; or the Christmas favorites you grew up with and still hum in the shower, even in the summer! And you don't have to do it alone! You can form your own, special small group for the
Christmas in July event. All we ask is that you find the music as quickly as possible and get it to Wendy Kallen, our music director. This goes for soloists or small groups and even instrumentalists!
BAKERS ...
But the MAIN point of this fundraiser is to help our Music Ministry support itself outside of the regular church budget. We raise those funds by holding a silent auction while everyone is enjoying the snowy, Christmasy music: an auction of amazing desserts ... the kind of desserts that you usually only find in restaurants or at your holiday dinner table. If you’re a great baker, we want you to share your creations with us as one of the auction items at the “cool” event. But remember — we want stuff that will really knock the attendees’ socks off, desserts that are decadent — you know, the kind that don’t lose calories when crumbs
fall off ...
WHEN IS IT? ...
This event is on Sunday, July 24, at 2 pm, hosted by our very own Pastor Brian Kent and a mystery guest! Sign up sheets are available! See Wendy Kallen at church, or email her at wendy.kallen@hopeumc.com
Pastor Brian’s Faith Works
I want to talk about our kids, or youth, and our young adults. I have not gotten permission from the individuals, so I will share about their talents and gifts and not their names.
We have seen the blessings of God through the most amazing young people at this church. We have national champion cheerleaders, fantastic band and orchestra musicians, and people who sing and dance and act in musical theater.
We have male and female gymnasts who are competing and performing far beyond their ages. There are two young people in our church who perform gymnastics on aerial silks, including one who is playing the violin while performing.
We watch our outstanding young people playing soccer and football, softball and hockey, volleyball and competitive water sports. “Our” young people are track and field
athletes, hikers and basketball players.
We have seen profound painting artists, film-makers, set-makers, and AV technicians.
We have a multitude of young people who lift us up through their service as acolytes and singers, liturgists and speakers.
But above and beyond all of these talents and gifts and ways to serve and express life, we have young people who are serving God, who are showing us how to love, how to be friends, how to be children of God.
Thank God for all of them — for all of YOU young people. And for all of the talents and gifts that I forgot to include, please e-mail me at revbriankent@att.net

CELEBRATION OF PASTOR DREW
Pastor Drew has been working to become ordained as an Elder in full connection with the United Methodist Church. After 17 years of hard work and dedication, he recently accomplished his goal! In honor of this achievement, there will be a BBQ (hot dogs and hamburgers) after SNA on July 9th, hosted jointly by the Staff Parish Relations Committee and the youth group. We will also be celebrating the safe return and the wonderful work that the youth have performed in Arizona during their Sierra Service Project.
Watch for a sign up table at all church services so we know how many people to plan for. Hot dogs, hamburgers, condiments, plates, etc. will be provided, but please bring a side dish or dessert to share.
Pastor Drew has requested that any gifts go to support the youth group. We hope to see you there!
MUSIC NOTES

MISSIONS CORNER
“Leave Your Clothes at Church!” is our theme
for June. Now that we have your attention, we’d like you to leave “job interview” shoes, belts and clothes on the clothes rack in the Narthex for people at the Good Neighbor Center. GNC and its parent organization, Metro Community Ministries, have programs for job training, resume preparation, interview skills, problem solving, etc., to help people get into or back into the work force. Also,
the GNC needs volunteers at its center in Chollas View, which distributes food and clothing and provides other assistance to low income families.
Volunteers are especially needed Mondays and
Fridays, 9 AM to 3 PM. Contact Hope member
Sharon Wade for more information.
As we go to press, Hope member Lynn Riffle will be completing her time as a volunteer with a Christian aid group working on a building project in Ecuador. Thanks to all who gave money (she raised $2670 from Hope members!) and donated “pills”: 4002 kids vitamins, 510 adult vitamins, 9900 acetaminophen tablets and 1648 anti-diarrhea
tablets! Hope members are also helping earthquake victims in other ways — our Disaster Relief Team made 2200 disaster relief kits during its spring trip to UMCOR West in Salt Lake City; many of these kits have gone to Ecuador, too. Thanks for your
support and prayers for this important work.
A quick update on our May Fiesta lunch to benefit Children of Promise Orphanage in Tijuana — when the last enchilada was eaten and the donations counted, we raised over $1500. Thank you!
On June 27, 6 PM, Jones 6, we are going to have a chat over the internet with missionaries Vanessa and Cody Nelson, who are helping Syrian refugees in Jordan. Anyone is welcome to join us — byod (bring your own dinner)! In August we hope to have an “in person” visit by Rev. Sveta Tsoy, District Superintendent of United Methodist Churches in the Siberia/Far East District of Russia. Watch for more information on both of these events.
Finally, don’t forget our friends at the Rancho Bernardo Community Presbyterian Church Thrift Store, 12845 Poway Road, Poway. If you donate furniture, mention Hope UMC and our Missions Com. will receive 50% of the proceeds.
Our next committee meeting is Mon. June 27, 6
PM, Jones 6. Come join us![Terry and Larry Sieck, co-chr., Outreach/Missions Committee]
NEW MEN’S BIBLE STUDY
Walking in the Footsteps of Jesus Thursday Knights, a men’s small group, is inviting all Hope Men to participate in a six-week Lent Bible study starting February 11th. The video-based study (Thursdays 7 to 8:30 PM in the Covenant Hall library) addresses the book, The Way: Walking in the Footsteps of Jesus, by United Methodist pastor Adam Hamilton, which will be provided. Travel with Hamilton as he retraces the life and ministry of Jesus Christ. Using historical information, archaeological data, and stories of the faith, Hamilton follows in the footsteps of Jesus from his baptism to the temptations to the heart of his ministry, including the people he loved, the parables he taught, the enemies he made, and the healing he brought. Please contact Chuck Ward @ 858-780-1813 or chuckward4@sbcglobal.net for more information.
There is no cost to the participant for this study.
YOUTH
Thank You from the Youth Group
The youth group is sending out a huge thank you to everyone for their support. From special offerings to the car wash to the bake sale, you have supported and loved us. The youth group is growing and heading off to great things this summer.
We could not do it without you!
Sierra Service Project Team departs June 25th
Twenty youth and five adults are heading off to Tsaile, AZ on June 25th at 7:00 am, and will return on July 3rd. Join us in church on June 19th to pray for everyone’s safety and for the many blessings given and received on a mission trip like this one. We also ask for your continued prayers while we are serving. You can follow the SSP team on the Hope UMC Facebook page, and you can even send the participants mail. They have to dance to get their mail, so this is a fun way to participate with the youth.
Send mail by USPS only to:
First & Last Name, HOPE UMC
Sierra Service Project
General Delivery
Tsaile, Arizona 86556, United States
This is a very remote site, so allow for at least a week for the mail to arrive. You can also send mail to the entire youth group by addressing it to the Hope UMC Youth Group.

CAVE QUEST V.B.S.
Following Jesus the Light of the World!
Approximately 150 children and 60 volunteers
will take over the campus of Hope UMC the week of June 20-24 during our Cave Quest Vacation Bible School! Please pray for the safety and well-being of our staff and children at VBS and pray for all those whose lives will be touched by God’s grace during the week. If you are on campus between 11:45-Noon during the week, feel free to join us for our closing session in the Sanctuary.
HOPE CHANCEL TRANSFORMS INTO A CAVE!
The Saturday before VBS — June 18 — Kirk
Rummel, Kathy Askins and their creative team of set designers will turn our Chancel into a cool cave, complete with stalagmite and stalactites!
This transformation doesn’t come easy, though, and we need your help. If you can spare a few hours starting at 9:00am to support VBS behind the scenes, you’ll get to see creative genius at work! Please consider supporting our most important children’s outreach program by lending a hand on Saturday, June 18.
VBS CREW LEADER MEETING
Saturday, June 18 10:00-11:30
If you’ve signed up to be a crew Leader at Cave Quest VBS, be sure to come to the meeting on Saturday, June 18 from 10:00-11:30 in rooms J1-J2 (the children’s S.S. rooms). We’ll give you basic instruction about how to lead the kids while still having fun yourself and you’ll meet your Crew Leader partner. If you can find a box about the size of a file box or what copy paper comes in, please bring it so you can decorate it for your Crew. We’ll be done by 11:30. Please RSVP to Carrie in the office (858.485.5840, x103) to let us
know whether or not you can make this meeting.
KID’S SUMMERTIME OFFERINGS!
The second weekends of June, July, and August, the children will be collecting offerings from the congregation as they exit the Sanctuary after Time with Children. These offerings will be combined with those collected in Children’s Kids Alive and Sunday School classes over the summer and during Vacation Bible School and will be used to purchase new books (in English) for the children of Fiji whose school libraries were destroyed by Cyclone Winston this past February. 100% of the funds collected will be used to purchase books through the online source BetterWorldBooks.com which will then ship them to Fiji for free. All books are being sent to our United Methodist Missionary Rev. Jerusha Neal, who is on staff at the Davuilevu Theological College in Fiji.
(Jerusha and her husband Wes were the pastors at Santee UMC about 8 years ago, so they’re part of our San Diego family!) The college will see to it that the books are distributed to the schools and libraries throughout the island. Thank you in advance for helping our children share God’s love with the children of Fiji!
