The Upper Room Daily Devotional from Nashville, Tennessee, United States "A GOOD FOUNDATION" for Friday, 10 June 2016 with Scripture 1 Corinthians 3:5-11

The Upper Room Daily Devotional from Nashville, Tennessee, United States "A GOOD FOUNDATION" for Friday, 10 June 2016 with Scripture 1 Corinthians 3:5 After all, what is Apollos? What is Sha’ul? Only servants through whom you came to trust. Indeed, it was the Lord who brought you to trust through one of us or through another. 6 I planted the seed, and Apollos watered it, but it was God who made it grow. 7 So neither the planter nor the waterer is anything, only God who makes things grow — 8 planter and waterer are the same.
However, each will be rewarded according to his work. 9 For we are God’s co-workers; you are God’s field, God’s building. 10 Using the grace God gave me, I laid a foundation, like a skilled master-builder; and another man is building on it. But let each one be careful how he builds. 11 For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Yeshua the Messiah.

No one can lay any foundation other than the one that has been laid; that foundation is Jesus Christ.[1 Corinthians 3:11 (NRSV)]
I grew up in a small rural village in Gujarat, India. For primary school, my parents sent me to a Christian boarding school. Though I received a good education, the school was not funded properly, and we never had enough to eat. I cannot think of a day during my four years at the school when I did not go to bed hungry.
But when I look back, I have very fond memories of the school. During my years at the school, I came to know the Lord; and my education built a good foundation for the rest of my life.
Because I am so grateful for the seeds of faith that the school gave me, I have made a commitment to visit the school every year to help the children meet some of their needs. I provide a good meal and a small, practical gift for each child. After the meal, the children greet me and receive their gifts. Each child hugs me and says, “Thank you, Uncle. God bless you.” Being able to help the children of the school where the seeds of faith were first planted in me is one of the greatest joys and blessings of my life.
In today’s reading, Paul reminded the Corinthian church that seeds of faith can be planted in many ways, but it is “God who gives the growth” (verse 6). When we show compassion and nurture the faith of others, we help to lay the foundation of Christ for future generations.
