Weekly eNote from Senior Pastor Adam Hamilton from The United Methodist Church of the Resurrection in Leawood, Kansas, United States for Friday, 3 June 2016
Dear Resurrection Family,
As you read this, I am in Syracuse, New York, speaking with 1,500 plus pastors and laity at the Upper New York Annual Conference. Thank you for praying with and for me, and for each of the pastors and churches of the Upper New York Annual Conference! One of the visions of our church since we began was to work for the revitalization and renewal of the United Methodist Church. Last year more than 15,000 churches across the country used one or more resources, ideas, strategies or studies that they learned from you.
Each summer it is our hope, in the midst of your travels and vacation that you’ll make Church of the Resurrection one of your summer destinations, and that you will make a commitment to be in worship, in person or online, that you will participate in one fellowship event to connect with others, that you will serve at least once as part of one our summer mission activities, and that you will find at least one way to grow in your faith this summer. On Friday of Father’s Day weekend we’re heading to the K to watch the Royals. I just learned we have over, 1,200 Resurrection members attending this event! I’m looking forward to seeing you out there!
In worship this weekend, we continue our series, "Unsettled – Asking the Tough Questions" at Leawood and Downtown. Pastor Wendy Lyons Chrostek will share a message titled “Questions are the Answer.” Last week I joined online and Pastor Scott’s sermon was outstanding. Pastor Jason will preach on “Adventure” at Resurrection West and Pastor Penny on “Livin’ in the Mess” at Blue Springs. Remember, if you are out of town, you can always join us online at rezonline.org.
On the Leawood campus, you may notice two construction projects beginning next week in the current Narthex as we begin connecting the building to the new sanctuary. First, a new stairwell will need to be constructed on the north side of the building where KiDSCOR and the narthex meet. This will mean that the missions collections area on the first floor will be relocated to the other side of the narthex. Additionally, the business center on the second floor will be removed. False walls will be built around these areas to keep the construction areas safe and separate from the daily activity of the church. We will try to keep construction noise to a minimum, but apologize in advance for any disruption you may experience.
The second area of construction will occur at the southwest doors near the Connection Point. Another false wall will be built around that area as they remove those doors to connect the two buildings. Again, we apologize for any disruption you may experience, but these are exciting things happening as we near completion of the new sanctuary. If you have any questions or concerns, please let us know.
One of our Destination Resurrection learning events kicks off this week on Tuesday. Rev. Jeff Kirby will teach a class exploring how the Book of Psalms can deepen our faith and teach us how to pray in every situation of our lives. Register online for the June 7 class from6:30 – 8:30 pm online. This class will also be streamed live onrezonline.org.
We also have a variety of summer Resurrection Care Night Classes on Thursday nights. Care Night begins at 5:30 pm with a community dinner in the Student Center, followed by classes, groups and the Live Forward program. See classes/groups and registration here. New classes beginning next Thursday include:
- As Yourself, a series of discussions on what it means to love yourself when Jesus instructs us to love your neighbor as yourself. This class begins at 6:30 pm in C050.
- Communicating Through Conflict, a class to help you resolve issues, move through conflicts and make your relationships stronger in the process. This three-session class will be led by Kay McCarthy, a state certified mediator with extensive training in helping people successfully address conflict. This class begins at 6:30 pm in C041. Register online.
Don’t forget our annual Church Conference is on Tuesday, June 7, at 6 pm in B200 on the Leawood Campus. This is a special called Church Conference we have every spring or early summer for the purpose of voting on the senior pastor’s compensation. This is one of many ways that we seek to maintain transparency here at the church. You also vote on the aggregate budget for the rest of our pastor’s compensation packages.
You may know that we have a goal of raising up a cumulative total of 200 ordained pastors from our congregation by 2035. This year five more pastors and deacons were ordained or consecrated who received their start, or began their ordination journey here at Resurrection. Congratulations to: Katherine Ebling Frazier, Andy Frazier, Joe McColligan, Todd Maberry, Karla Woodward, and Melanie Martin. In addition congratulations to Pastor Darryl Burton who just graduated from seminary!
This week, we are once again welcoming 18 summer interns to our staff. This is a great program that infuses our staff team with bright and passionate college students and at the same time provides an opportunity for these students to explore ministry as a vocation – some of these will go on to ordination as a part of the 200 young people we hope to help answer God’s call to ordained ministry. If you get a chance to meet some of these amazing students, please welcome and encourage them! Their names and ministry departments are listed at the bottom of this email.
Finally, this Sunday is my 34th wedding anniversary. LaVon travelled with me to the Upper New York Annual Conference so we could be together on our anniversary and so that we could see Rebecca, our youngest, who lives in New York. Last night LaVon and I spoke to 25 young clergy from the Upper New York Conference and I listened as she reflected upon the blessings and challenges of the last 26 years – more blessings than challenges. One thing I know, this church would never have become what it is were it not for the many ways she partnered with me in this work. I love her more today than I ever have, and am profoundly grateful for her love and friendship.
Thanks again for praying for the 900+ pastors and churches of Upper New York!
In Christ’s love,
Adam
