Redondo Beach, California, United States' First United Methodist Church eNews: "New Member Class at 9:30, Water Stories" This Sunday: New Member Class at 9:30, summer Sunday School continuesFrom Pastor Molly: on vacationI'm enjoying a few days of vacation this week, in Colorado's Rocky Mountains with my family. It's nice to have a bit of time away, and time off. I always struggle to balance my desire to spend vacations on exciting adventures, and my desire to simply rest. Whatever I choose, there's also the challenge of being really present where I am.
As a reminder to myself, and maybe to you, too, I want to share this beloved poem, by Wendell Berry. He calls it "The Vacation."
Once there was a man who filmed his vacation.
He went flying down the river in his boat with his video camera to his eye, making a moving picture of the moving river upon which his sleek boat moved swiftly toward the end of his vacation. He showed his vacation to his camera, which pictured it, preserving it forever: the river, the trees, the sky, the light, the bow of his rushing boat behind which he stood with his camera preserving his vacation even as he was having it so that after he had had it he would still have it. It would be there. With a flick of a switch, there it would be. But he would not be in it. He would never be in it.[Pastor Molly Vetter]

Exodus 14:15-31
"Through Water"
Rev. Molly Vetter, preaching
Scripture Text Exodus 14:(A: iii) 15 Adonai asked Moshe, “Why are you crying to me? Tell the people of Isra’el to go forward! 16 Lift your staff, reach out with your hand over the sea, and divide it in two. The people of Isra’el will advance into the sea on dry ground. 17 As for me, I will make the Egyptians hardhearted; and they will march in after them; thus I will win glory for myself at the expense of Pharaoh and all his army, chariots and cavalry. 18 Then the Egyptians will realize that I am Adonai, when I have won myself glory at the expense of Pharaoh, his chariots and his cavalry.”
19 Next, the angel of God, who was going ahead of the camp of Isra’el, moved away and went behind them; and the column of cloud moved away from in front of them and stood behind them. 20 It stationed itself between the camp of Egypt and the camp of Isra’el — there was cloud and darkness here, but light by night there; so that the one did not come near the other all night long.
21 Moshe reached his hand out over the sea, and Adonai caused the sea to go back before a strong east wind all night. He made the sea become dry land, and its water was divided in two. 22 Then the people of Isra’el went into the sea on the dry ground, with the water walled up for them on their right and on their left.
23 The Egyptians continued their pursuit, going after them into the sea — all Pharaoh’s horses, chariots and cavalry. 24 Just before dawn, Adonai looked out on the Egyptian army through the column of fire and cloud and threw them into a panic. 25 He caused the wheels of their chariots to break off, so that they could move only with difficulty. The Egyptians said, “Adonai is fighting for Isra’el against the Egyptians! Let’s get away from them!”
(A: iv, S: iii) 26 Adonai said to Moshe, “Reach your hand out over the sea, and the water will return and cover the Egyptians with their chariots and cavalry.” 27 Moshe reached his hand out over the sea, and by dawn the sea had returned to its former depth. The Egyptians tried to flee, but Adonai swept them into the sea. 28 The water came back and covered all the chariots and cavalry of Pharaoh’s army who had followed them into the sea — not even one of them was left. 29 But the people of Isra’el walked on dry ground in the sea, with the water walled up for them on their right and on their left.
30 On that day, Adonai saved Isra’el from the Egyptians; Isra’el saw the Egyptians dead on the shore. 31 When Isra’el saw the mighty deed that Adonai had performed against the Egyptians, the people feared Adonai, and they believed in Adonai and in his servant Moshe.
John Wesley's Notes-Commentary for Exodus 14:15-31
Verse 15
[15] And the LORD said unto Moses, Wherefore criest thou unto me? speak unto the children of Israel, that they go forward:
Wherefore criest thou unto me — Moses though he was assured of a good issue, yet did not neglect prayer. We read not of one word he said in prayer, but he lifted up his heart to God, and God well understood, and took notice of. Moses's silent prayer prevailed more with God, than Israel's loud out-cries. But is God displeased with Moses for praying? No, he asks this question, Wherefore criest thou unto me? Wherefore shouldst thou press thy petition any farther, when it is already granted? Moses has something else to do besides praying, he is to command the hosts of Israel.
Speak to them that they go forward — Some think Moses had prayed not so much for their deliverance, he was assured of that; as for the pardon of their murmurings, and God's ordering them to go forward, was an intimation of the pardon. Moses bid them stand still and expect orders from God: and now orders are given. They thought they must have been directed either to the right hand, or to the left; no, saith God, speak to them to go forward, directly to the sea-side; as if there had lain a fleet of transport ships ready for them to embark in. Let the children of Israel go as far as they can upon dry ground, and then God will divide the sea. The same power could have congealed the waters for them to pass over, but infinite wisdom chose rather to divide the waters for them to pass through, for that way of salvation is always pitched upon which is most humbling.
Verse 19
[19] And the angel of God, which went before the camp of Israel, removed and went behind them; and the pillar of the cloud went from before their face, and stood behind them:
The angel of God — Whose ministry was made use of in the pillar of cloud and fire, went from before the camp of Israel, where they did not now need a guide; there was no danger of missing their way through the sea, and came behind them, where now they needed a guard, the Egyptians being just ready to seize the hindmost of them. There it was of use to the Israelites, not only to protect them, but to light them through the sea; and at the same time it confounded the Egyptians, so that they lost sight of their prey, just when they were ready to lay hands on it. The word and providence of God have a black and dark side towards sin and sinners, but a bright and pleasant side towards those that are Israelites indeed.
Verse 21
[21] And Moses stretched out his hand over the sea; and the LORD caused the sea to go back by a strong east wind all that night, and made the sea dry land, and the waters were divided.
We have here the history of that work of wonder which is so often mentioned both in the Old and New Testament. An instance of God's almighty power in dividing the sea, and opening a passage through the waters. It was a bay, or gulf, or arm of the sea, two or three leagues over. The God of nature has not tied himself to its laws, but when he pleases dispenseth with them, and then the fire doth not burn, nor the water flow. They went through the sea to the opposite shore; they walked upon dry land in the midst of the sea; and the pillar of cloud being their rereward, the waters were a wall to them on their right hand, and on their left. Moses and Aaron it is likely ventured first, into this untrodden path, and then all Israel after them; and this march through the paths of the great waters would make their march afterwards through the wilderness less formidable. This march through the sea was in the night, and not a moon-shine night, for it was seven days after the full moon, so that they had no light but what they had from the pillar of fire. This made it the more awful, but where God leads us, he will light us; while we follow his conduct we shall not want his comforts.
Verse 23
[23] And the Egyptians pursued, and went in after them to the midst of the sea, even all Pharaoh's horses, his chariots, and his horsemen.
And the Egyptians went in after them into the midst of the sea — They thought, why might they not venture where Israel did? They were more advantageously provided with chariots and horses, while the Israelites were on foot.
Verse 24
[24] And it came to pass, that in the morning watch the LORD looked unto the host of the Egyptians through the pillar of fire and of the cloud, and troubled the host of the Egyptians,
The Lord — Called the angel before, looked - With indignation, upon the Egyptians, and troubled the Egyptians - With terrible winds and lightnings and thunders, Exodus 15:10; Psalms 77:18,19. Also with terror of mind.
Verse 25
[25] And took off their chariot wheels, that they drave them heavily: so that the Egyptians said, Let us flee from the face of Israel; for the LORD fighteth for them against the Egyptians.
They had driven furiously, but now they drove heavily, and found themselves embarrassed at every step; the way grew deep, their hearts grew sad, their wheels dropt off, and the axle-trees failed. They had been flying upon the back of Israel as the hawk upon the dove; but now they cried, Let us flee from the face of Israel.
Verse 26
[26] And the LORD said unto Moses, Stretch out thine hand over the sea, that the waters may come again upon the Egyptians, upon their chariots, and upon their horsemen.
And the Lord said unto Moses, Stretch out thy hand over the sea — And give a signal to the waters to close again, as before upon the word of command they had opened to the right and the left. He did so, and immediately the waters returned to their place, and overwhelmed all the host of the Egyptians. Pharaoh and his servants, that had hardened one another in sin, now fell together, and not one escaped. An ancient tradition saith, That Pharaoh's magicians Jannes and Jambres perished with the rest. Now God got him honour upon Pharaoh, a rebel to God, and a slave to his own barbarous passions; perfectly lost to humanity, virtue, and all true honour; here be lies buried in the deep, a perpetual monument of divine justice: here he went down to the pit, though he was the terror of the mighty in the land of the living.
Verse 28
[28] And the waters returned, and covered the chariots, and the horsemen, and all the host of Pharaoh that came into the sea after them; there remained not so much as one of them.
After them — That is, after the Israelites.
Verse 30
[30] Thus the LORD saved Israel that day out of the hand of the Egyptians; and Israel saw the Egyptians dead upon the sea shore.
And Israel saw the Egyptians dead upon the shore — The Egyptians were very curious in preserving the bodies of their great men, but here the utmost contempt is poured upon all the grandees of Egypt; see how they lie heaps upon heaps, as dung upon the face of the earth.
Verse 31
[31] And Israel saw that great work which the LORD did upon the Egyptians: and the people feared the LORD, and believed the LORD, and his servant Moses.
And Israel feared the Lord, and believed the Lord and his servant Moses — Now they were ashamed of their distrusts and murmurings; and in the mind they were in, they would never again despair of help from heaven; no not in the greatest straits! They would never again quarrel with Moses; nor talk of returning to Egypt. How well were it for us, if we were, always in as good a frame, as we are in sometimes!

When I get to heaven goin' to sing and shout
Nobody there for turn me out
Pharaoh's army got drowned O Mary don't you weep
When I get to Heaven goin' to put on my shoes
Run about glory and tell all the news
Pharaoh's army got drowned
O Mary don't you weep

The other day while walking from our parking lot South towards Torrance Blvd. I decided to read our church signage. The other day while walking from our parking lot South towards Torrance Blvd. I decided to read our church signage. The electric (lighted) sign on the Nursery/Classroom building reads in large red letters FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH on a white background. Below this we read OPEN HEARTS OPEN MINDS OPEN DOORS and SUNDAY WORSHIP 8:30 & 10:30. The bottom line is BEACHFAITH.ORG 310-372-8445, black letters with a white background.
Then, as I walked farther South to the steps leading into the North door of our sanctuary, I looked at the gray granite cornerstone next to the steps. It reads FIRST METHODIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH on its East face. On its South face (remember it is a cornerstone) it reads ERECTED 1926. This other detail is hidden by a tree trunk, but it is carved into the granite and readable if you wish to see it.
On the corner of Torrance and Broadway there is the free standing sign that I didn't copy down, for the world to see. Also there is the carved detail over the door and the latest banner to attract attention. As one drives by, if the banner doesn't catch the eye there is no signage on the Torrance Blvd. side of our building at all. In past years there was lettering painted saying FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH but this was painted over some years ago. Check all this out sometime.
As many of you know I am scheduling greeters almost all the time and one time I was at the South door and passers by asked me if they could come in and see the inside of this grand old church building and of course I said yes. They looked us over and I told them a brief bit of our history and they said they had often said they wondered what it was like inside. I invited therm to stay, but they were headed for the beach and had children with them. I wonder if they ever came back to a service.

Hailing from the small coastal town of Bangor in Northern Ireland, the Rend Collective is a group of “twenty-somethings” that gathered at Rend, what the band describes as “a ministry for spiritually hungry young adults, desperately seeking an authentic, raw and real expression of church, which was informally pastored by bandleader, Gareth Gilkeson.” Their first album –Homemade Worship by Handmade People – was released in 2012, and was followed by a string of hits in the contemporary Christian music world. Their music is based around older instruments - their native Irish folk instruments, old rock and roll guitars and assorted other whimsical musical toys - and has a raw, uninhibited style that gets the toes tapping and the feet stomping. They don’t call themselves a folk band, but insist rather “We are not actually an indie-folk band - despite all the beards and bow-ties and banjos. We are a celebration band. It’s just a coincidence that folk music and celebration make a great pairing!” Their song My Lighthouse is a classic foot-stomper that never fails to engage the listener.
This Sunday we are joined by the world-renowned Dr. Albert McNeil to celebrate our morning worship.
A native son of Los Angeles, Dr. McNeil did his undergraduate and graduate degrees at UCLA, and his doctoral work at USC, the Westminster Choir College of Princeton and the University of Lausanne, Switzerland. He also received honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degrees from CSUN and the Westminster Choir College.
He is the author of a series of textbooks on music education and is the recipient of several awards, including: Alumnus of the Year for Professional Excellence, presented by his alma mater, UCLA; The Michael Korn Founders Award for Development of the Professional Choral Art (1999), granted by Chorus America; and a Lifetime Achievement Award given by the American Choral Directors Association.
He is Professor Emeritus of Music at the University of California, Davis, and during his tenure there he spent 10 years as director of the Sacramento Chorale and co-founded the Sacramento Symphony Chorus.
He is visiting Director of Music at Founders Church of Religious Science, but is perhaps best known as the founder of the world-famous Albert McNeil Jubilee Singers, a globe-trotting ensemble that spreads the music of Negro spirituals and concert music by African-American composers.
A 30-year resident of Hermosa Beach, this fine country gentleman prefers to be called "Al", and he'll be conducting our choir in a performance of his arrangement of the spiritual "O Mary, Don't You Weep", and will regale us before us before and after the service with his piano stylings.

"O Mary Don’t You Weep" by Bruce Springsteen
Well if I could, I surely would,
Stand on the rock where Moses stood,
Pharoh's army got drownded,
Oh Mary don't you weep.
Oh Mary don't you weep no more,
Oh Mary don't you weep no more,
Pharoh's army got drownded,
Oh Mary don't you weep.
Well Mary wore three links of chain,
On every link was Jesus name,
Pharoh's army got drownded,
Oh Mary don't you weep.
Oh Mary don't you weep no more,
Oh Mary don't you weep no more,
Pharoh's army got drownded,
Oh Mary don't you weep.
Well one of these nights about 12 o'clock,
This old world is gonna rock,
Pharoh's army got drownded,
Oh Mary don't you weep.
Well Moses stood on the Red Sea shore,
Smote the water with a two by four,
Pharoh's army got drownded,
Oh Mary don't you weep.
Oh Mary don't you weep no more,
Oh Mary…

"Mary, Don't You Weep" by Aretha Franklin
Oh Oh Mary
Oh Oh Mary
(Chorus)
Oh, Mary, don't you weep, don't you mourn.
Oh, Mary, don't you weep, don't you mourn.
Didn't Pharaoh's army get drowned?
Oh, Mary, don't you weep.
Well, Satan got mad and he knows I'm glad.
Missed that soul that he thought he had.
Now, didn't Pharaoh's army get drowned?
Oh, Mary, don't you weep.
(Chorus)
Well, one of these nights around twelve o'clock,
This old town's gonna really rock.
Didn't Pharaoh's army get drowned?
Oh, Mary, don't you weep.
(Chorus)
Cheer up, sisters and don't you cry.
There'll be good times bye and bye.
Didn't Pharaoh's army get drowned?
Oh, Mary, don't you weep.
(Chorus: x2)
