A few days ago, we kicked off the Together Tour in a packed theater in Portland! I spoke on the escalation of hate this election season, the role of forgiveness, and#RevolutionaryLove as the call of our times.
People called it part Poetry Slam, part Ted Talk, part Revolution.
On stage, I was able to share an extraordinary story: Fifteen years ago, Balbir Singh Sodhi was the first person killed in a hate crime after 9/11. At the memorial this year, I talked with Balbir’s younger brother Rana about Revolutionary Love – extending the ethic of love to those who do not look like us, even those who hurt us.
Then we decided to do something they had never done before. We called his brother’s murderer – and Rana forgave him.
It was unexpected and overwhelming: the first step on a long road to truth and reconciliation. Rana’s example of love and forgiveness shows us another way to respond to hate, one that can break the cycle of violence that threatens America’s future. It shows #RevolutionaryLove in action.
Please LISTEN to the 10-minute broadcast on PRI the World this month and share it with your friends: http://www.pri.org/stories/2016-09-23/his-brother-was-murdered-wearing-turban-after-911-last-week-he-spoke-killer
I will continue to tell this story on tour. Come hear it live and be part of the story!
We are heading to LA, CHICAGO, NYC, ATLANTA, AND DENVER. Rana Sodhi will join the tour in LA and DENVER – his story is a beacon for all of us.
Will you join us?

At our kick-off event in Portland, the whole night was a tapestry of storytelling – trans model Geena Rocero on the courage of coming out as who you are, teacher Seane Corn on yoga as embodied meditation, Olympic gold medalist Abby Wambach on profound authenticity, author Glennon Doyle Melton on telling the truth, convener Jennifer Rudolph Walsh on coming together and staying together, and faith leader Jacqui Lewis on what it means to pledge love in this season of division.
We believe that our stories can inspire us to come together and work towards courageous action, rooted in #RevolutionaryLove. We can’t wait to share these stories and more with you on tour!
And remember to use #RevolutionaryLove to tell us if you are joining us on the tour!
In gratitude,
Valarie Kaur
