From Pastor Molly: Teaching as We Go
I want to issue a challenge to our congregation: invite someone else at church to join you in whatever you do to volunteer in our ministries. Show them what you do, see your work in a new way through their eyes, and give a glimpse into one way that we serve together.
I see so many of you doing so many things that are a blessing to others and to the church. For everyone who is already involved, it will be a chance to get to know someone new by serving side-by-side. For anyone who accompanies you once, it might help them see and know more about the diversity of small ways we are able to use our time, efforts and skills in service.
Ask someone who's of a different age or stage in life, and use it as an excuse to become friends. If you see someone who seems very involved that you'd like to know, ask if you can accompany them in some ministry or task.
The richness of our community of people who serve with love is inspiring and beautiful to watch!
Grace and peace,[Pastor Molly Vetter]
Please keep the dedicated volunteers who organize and work at the rummage sale in your prayers this weekend! I also invite your prayer for our Cal-Pac Young Adults Retreat this weekend, where I'll be helping as a small group leader. I look forward to seeing you Sunday.

Genesis 24:10-28
"By This I Shall Know" Rev. Molly Vetter, preaching
Scripture Text:
Genesis 24:(iii) 10 Then the servant took ten of his master’s camels and all kinds of gifts from his master, got up and went to Aram-Naharayim, to Nachor’s city. 11 Toward evening, when the women go out to draw water, he had the camels kneel down outside the city by the well. 12 He said, “Adonai, God of my master Avraham, please let me succeed today; and show your grace to my master Avraham. 13 Here I am, standing by the spring, as the daughters of the townsfolk come out to draw water. 14 I will say to one of the girls, ‘Please lower your jug, so that I can drink.’ If she answers, ‘Yes, drink; and I will water your camels as well,’ then let her be the one you intend for your servant Yitz’chak. This is how I will know that you have shown grace to my master.”
15 Before he had finished speaking, Rivkah the daughter of B’tu’el son of Milkah the wife of Nachor Avraham’s brother, came out with her jug on her shoulder. 16 The girl was very beautiful, a virgin, never having had sexual relations with any man. She went down to the spring, filled her jug and came up. 17 The servant ran to meet her and said, “Please give me a sip of water from your jug to drink.” 18 “Drink, my lord,” she replied, and immediately lowered her jug onto her arm and let him drink. 19 When she was through letting him drink, she said, “I will also draw water for your camels until they have drunk their fill.” 20 She quickly emptied her jug into the trough, then ran again to the well to draw water, and kept on drawing water for all his camels. 21 The man gazed at her in silence, waiting to find out whether Adonai had made his trip successful or not.
22 When the camels were done drinking, the man took a gold nose-ring weighing one-fifth of an ounce and two gold bracelets weighing four ounces 23 and asked, “Whose daughter are you? Tell me, please. Is there room in your father’s house for us to spend the night?” 24 She answered, “I am the daughter of B’tu’el the son Milkah bore to Nachor,” 25 adding, “We have plenty of straw and fodder, and room for staying overnight.” 26 The man bowed his head and prostrated himself before Adonai. (iv) 27 Then he said, “Blessed be Adonai, God of my master Avraham, who has not abandoned his faithful love for my master; because Adonai has guided me to the house of my master’s kinsmen.” 28 The girl ran off and told her mother’s household what had happened.
John Wesley's Notes-Commentary:
Genesis 24:10-28
Verse 11
[11] And he made his camels to kneel down without the city by a well of water at the time of the evening, even the time that women go out to draw water.
He made his camels kneel down — Perhaps to unload them.
Verse 12
[12] And he said, O LORD God of my master Abraham, I pray thee, send me good speed this day, and shew kindness unto my master Abraham.
Send me good speed this day — We have leave to be particular in recommending our affairs to the care of Divine providence. Those that would have good speed must pray for it this day, in this affair. Thus we must, in all our ways acknowledge God.
Verse 14
[14] And let it come to pass, that the damsel to whom I shall say, Let down thy pitcher, I pray thee, that I may drink; and she shall say, Drink, and I will give thy camels drink also: let the same be she that thou hast appointed for thy servant Isaac; and thereby shall I know that thou hast shewed kindness unto my master.
Let it come to pass — He prays God, that be would please to make his way plain and clear before him, by the concurrence of minute circumstances in his favour. It is the comfort, as well as the belief, of a good man, that God's providence extends itself to the smallest occurrences, and admirably serves its own purposes by them. And it is our wisdom, in all our affairs, to follow providence. Yea, it is very desirable, and that which we may lawfully pray for, while, in the general, we set God's will before us as our rule, that he will, by hints of providence, direct us in the way of our duty, and give us indications what his mind is. Thus he guides his people with his eye, and leads them in a plain path.
Verse 15
[15] And it came to pass, before he had done speaking, that, behold, Rebekah came out, who was born to Bethuel, son of Milcah, the wife of Nahor, Abraham's brother, with her pitcher upon her shoulder.
And before he had done speaking, behold Rebekah came out — Who in all respects, answered the characters he wished for in the woman that was to be his master's wife, handsome and healthful, humble and industrious, courteous and obliging to a stranger. And providence so ordered it, that she did that which exactly answered his sign. She not only gave him drink, but, which was more than could have been expected, she offered her service to give his camels drink, which was the very sign he proposed. God, in his providence, doth sometimes wonderfully own the prayer of faith, and gratify the innocent desires of his praying people even in little things, that he may shew the extent of his care, and may encourage them at all times, to seek him, and trust in him; yet we must take heed of being over bold in prescribing to God, lest the event should weaken our faith rather than strengthen it. And the concurrence of providences, and their minute circumstances, for the furtherance of our success in any business, ought to be particularly observed with wonder and thankfulness to the glory of God. We have been wanting to ourselves both in duty and comfort, by neglecting to observe providence.
Verse 27
[27] And he said, Blessed be the LORD God of my master Abraham, who hath not left destitute my master of his mercy and his truth: I being in the way, the LORD led me to the house of my master's brethren.
Blessed be the Lord God of my master Abraham — Observe here, 1. He had prayed for good speed, and now he had sped well, he gives thanks. 2. As yet, he was not certain what the issue might prove, yet he gives thanks. When God's favours are coming towards us; we must meet them with our praises.
The Lord led me to the house of my master's brethren — Those of them that were come out of Ur of the Chaldees, though they were not come to Canaan, but staid in Haran. They were not idolaters, but worshippers of the true God, and inclinable to the religion of Abraham's family.

Special Music: "How Lovely Is Thy Dwelling Place" by Brahms. "Love Rescue Me" by U2.
"How Lovely Is Thy Dwelling Place" by Brahms
1. How lovely is thy dwelling place, O Lord of Hosts!
For my soul, it longeth, yea fainteth,
For the courts of the Lord.
My soul and body crieth out, yea for the living God.
How lovely is thy dwelling place, O Lord of Hosts!
Blest are they that dwell within thy house,
They praise thy name evermore.
How lovely is thy dwelling place!
From Psalm 84
1 How lovely is your dwelling place,
O LORD Almighty!
2 My soul yearns, even faints,
for the courts of the LORD;
my heart and my flesh cry out
for the living God.
3 Even the sparrow has found a home,
and the swallow a nest for herself,
where she may have her young—
a place near your altar,
O LORD Almighty, my King and my God.
4 Blessed are those who dwell in your house;
they are ever praising you.
Selah
5 Blessed are those whose strength is in you,
who have set their hearts on pilgrimage.
6 As they pass through the Valley of Baca,
they make it a place of springs;
the autumn rains also cover it with pools. [b]
7 They go from strength to strength,
till each appears before God in Zion.
8 Hear my prayer, O LORD God Almighty;
listen to me, O God of Jacob.
Selah
9 Look upon our shield, [c] O God;
look with favor on your anointed one.
10 Better is one day in your courts
than a thousand elsewhere;
I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God
than dwell in the tents of the wicked.
11 For the LORD God is a sun and shield;
the LORD bestows favor and honor;
no good thing does he withhold
from those whose walk is blameless.
12 O LORD Almighty,
blessed is the man who trusts in you.
-------
1. How lovely is thy dwelling place,
O Lord of hosts, to me!
My thirsty soul desires and longs
within thy courts to be;
my very heart and flesh cry out,
O living God for thee.
2. Beside thine altars, gracious Lord,
the swallows find a nest;
how happy they who dwell with thee
and praise thee without rest,
and happy they whose hearts are set
upon the pilgrim's quest.
3. They who go through the desert vale
will find it filled with springs,
and they shall climb from height to height
till Zion's temple rings
with praise to thee, in glory throned,
Lord God, great King of kings.
4. One day within thy courts excels
a thousand spent away;
how happy they who keep thy laws
nor from thy precepts stray,
for thou shalt surely bless all those
who live the words they pray.

"Love Rescue Me" by U2 [Bob Dylan]
Love rescue me
Come forth and speak to me
Raise me up and don't let me fall
No man is my enemy
My own hands imprison me
Love rescue me
Many strangers have I met
On the road to my regret
Many lost who seek to find themselves in me
They ask me to reveal
The very thoughts they would conceal
Love rescue me
And the sun in the sky
Makes a shadow of you and I
Stretching out as the sun sinks in the sea
I'm here without a name
In the palace of my shame
Said, love rescue me
In the cold mirror of a glass
I see my reflection pass
See the dark shades of what I used to be
See the purple of her eyes
The scarlet of my lies
Love rescue me
Yea, though I walk
In the valley of shadow
Yea, I will fear no evil
I have cursed thy rod and staff
They no longer comfort me
Love rescue me
Sha la la, sha la la la
Sha la la la, ha la la
Sha la la la, sha la la la
Sha la la la, sha la la
Sha la la la, sha la la la
Sha la la
I said love, love rescue me
I said love
Climb up the mountains, said love
I said love, oh my love
On the hill of the son
I'm on the eve of a storm
And my word you must believe in
I said love, rescue me
Oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah
Yeah I'm here without a name
In the palace of my shame
I said love rescue me
I've conquered my past
The future is here at last
I stand at the entrance
To a new world I can see
The ruins to the right of me
Will soon have lost sight of me
Love rescue me

News From Our Members
Last Sunday was World Communion Sunday which featured Hawaiian music, explained in detail by Director of Music Jim Raycroft. I discovered I was not quite the only one to have tears as we heard the beautiful “Aloha Oe” (Until We meet Again) performed as The Postlude. It reminded me of my four trips to Hawaii with family and friends, always with that beautiful song in my head as we left the Islands for home, whether by ship or plane. One of the most beautiful places on earth, at least for me.

Last Sunday was World Communion Sunday which featured Hawaiian music, explained in detail by Director of Music Jim Raycroft. I discovered I was not quite the only one to have tears as we heard the beautiful "Aloha Oe" (Until We meet Again) performed as The Postlude. It reminded me of my four trips to Hawaii with family and friends, always with that beautiful song in my head as we left the Islands for home, whether by ship or plane. One of the most beautiful places on earth, at least for me.
Did you notice our sunny Sunday last week as our South side Sanctuary windows allowed sunshine to fall on Pastor Molly as she preached and then again as she prepared the elements for Communion? If you are up there doing a reading or singing you may not appreciate it, but it certainly gives me the feeling that God is quietly in our presence and arranging his personal spotlight for our benefit.
Now, last week at the Pot Luck luncheon after church, Pastor Molly introduced me to a young man with whom she was visiting, saying that Bob P. was now officially the oldest member, 95, in our congregation. So, if it is true, and I think it may be, I write this asking you to try and help me locate someone aged 96 or older who may be interested in joining our church. I'll even try to arrange a ride for them to attend. It just seems to me that somewhere in the South Bay another senior would be willing to enjoy our worship services, to Praise the Lord and be the recipient of such love and dedication as I see here each week and have enjoyed regularly since 1950. Give Ernie in the office the name and phone, and I'll do the rest to invite and encourage them to be a part of your and my church. It would help if they were healthy enough to attend regularly.
Finally, this is a reminder to attend the Semi-Annual Rummage Sale this Friday and Saturday. The UMW will appreciate your attendance, purchases and help. If you join us for lunch Friday noon you'll be much the better for it...Friday and Saturday, October 7 & 8.

Coming at Church
This Fall: Better Together
It's a church theme, a sermon series and more! All fall, we will be celebrating how we're Better Together, remembering how God works in the lives of communities and in our relationships. As the writer of Ecclesiastes said, "And though one might prevail against another, two will withstand one. A threefold cord is not quickly broken." (Ecclesiastes 4:12)
It goes much deeper, too--we come to know about God because of the people in whom we have seen God at work. Our faith and love make sense when we live them out with other people here on earth.
There's much more to say, and we hope you'll be a part of this whole meaningful season.

The Jesus Culture Conference began as part of the youth group of Bethel Church in Redding, California, with the first conference being held in 1999 and attracting 500 attendees. Since then, it has grown into a musical force for worship with a full time staff of dozens and a discography that numbers 33 albums. It recently expanded to Sacramento, where they meet at Folsom High School. One Thing Remains has been covered by numerous artists, including Kristian Stanfill, Israel Houghton and Chris Tomlin.
Ein Deutches Requiem (A German Requiem) by Johannes Brahms was inspired in part by the passing of Brahms' mentor Robert Schumann and in part by the passing of Brahms' mother. The Requiem Mass, in the Catholic tradition, is the funeral service and is generally directed towards the deceased – "Dona Eis Requiem", which means "grant them rest". Brahms wanted to write a Requiem Mass that was in the vernacular – German as opposed to Latin – and was aimed at the living who had suffered the loss – "Blessed are they that mourn, for they shall have comfort". The 4th movement is a popular anthem with text that is taken from Psalm 84 - "How Lovely Is Thy Dwelling Place".
On September 26, 1976, 14 year old Larry Mullen, Jr. placed a note on the bulletin board of Mount Temple Comprehensive School in Dublin, Ireland, looking for members to form a band. 6 people responded. They began as Feedback, performing covers of other artists' music, then in 1977 changed their name to The Hype with 5 members. In March of 1978, they phased out their fifth man and changed their name to U2, playing their own original material. Their 1st big break came when they won a competition on St. Patrick's Day, 1978, which provided them with the opportunity to record a demo that would be heard by CBS Ireland, a record label. Since then U2 has gone on to release 13 studio albums and have become one of the best-selling musical artists of all time, selling over 170 million albums worldwide. They have won 22 Grammy Awards and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2005. Rolling Stone ranked U2 as 22nd on their list of "100 Greatest Artists of All Time".
Love Rescue Me was part of the album Rattle and Hum, which was released in 1988. The album explores American root music and incorporates blues rock, folk rock and gospel elements in the music. In November of 1987, Bono met Bob Dylan and they wrote a song together called Prisoner of Love, which later became Love Rescue Me. The original recording was recorded with Bob Dylan singing lead vocals and was recorded at Sun Studios in Memphis, Tennessee, which had been home to Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash and Roy Orbison, to name a few. Dylan asked that his version not be included in the album because of previous commitments.
