Week Three: Mission Field
Reflection for the Week: What encourages me to engage more fully in the mission field?
The largest power failure in California history happened on September 8, 2011. There was a blessing in its timing, believe it or not. Occurring in the afternoon, it was still light when things went black. Can you imagine how many more accidents would have occurred and how many more injuries would have been inflicted if things went pitch black at 9:00 p.m.? Who hasn’t stubbed a knee or toe in the dark looking for a light?
It is simple. You just can’t see things without light. No wonder Paul and other preachers and teachers use the metaphor of light to speak of Christ. Christ allows us to see. Christ allows us to see the very face of God. Christ allows us to see how much God loves us and cares for us, and not just us, but all people.
Even more basic is the truth that without light, there would be no life at all. The basic light that makes possible all other lights is our sun. No sun, no earth, no life. So it is with God. The light of God in Christ is the source of our lives. No God, no Son, no life. The Corinthian passage reminds me of a great truth I have learned over the years. What is it? Faith sees with the heart, not the eye socket. When we have faith, we sort of see/feel the truth of God in our hearts. When we read or share with others about the image of Jesus, the “Light of knowledge” shows us the kind of life God intends for us. This is a life lived out in other-centered, caring relationships.
There is still darkness in many people’s lives, why not see if you can shine a little light today.
Prayer: Dear Lord, when the dawn comes tomorrow, may I see the path you want me to follow. Amen.
