From Pastor Molly: Some Humility
Today is the anniversary of the death of John Wesley. The founder of the Methodist movement, Rev. Wesley died at the age of 88, in 1791. The epitaph on his tomb in London speaks of his faithfulness, his dedication, and the success of his work in preaching and teaching. The epitaph continues:
Reader, if thou art constrain’d to bless the instrument, give God the glory.
That is, if you're inspired to praise his life, give the praise to God.
This inscription speaks to his humility, reminding us that our greatest successes are ultimately due to something much bigger than ourselves--they point all the way to God.
Yesterday was Ash Wednesday, when we turn in humble confession to God, taking ashes onto our foreheads as a sign of repentance and grace.
In very different ways, these two kinds of humility belong in tension together, opening up a space for us to live: when we feel wretched for things we have done wrong or failed to do right, humility reminds us that we are covered by God's loving grace. Our frail, faulty human lives are of infinite worth to God. And when we are tempted to believe that we've succeeded on our own, because we are awesome in and of ourselves, humility reminds us that we nothing apart from God's grace. We are fragile: we remember that we are dust, and to dust we shall return.
Whether you are feeling worn down by the struggle, or like you're on the top of your game, you are invited to let this good news change you: you are beloved. You are invited to use your life as an instrument of God's grace in the world.

Exodus 3:1-15
Scripture Text: Exodus 3:1 (iv) Now Moshe was tending the sheep of Yitro his father-in-law, the priest of Midyan. Leading the flock to the far side of the desert, he came to the mountain of God, to Horev. 2 The angel of Adonai appeared to him in a fire blazing from the middle of a bush. He looked and saw that although the bush was flaming with fire, yet the bush was not being burned up. 3 Moshe said, “I’m going to go over and see this amazing sight and find out why the bush isn’t being burned up.” 4 When Adonai saw that he had gone over to see, God called to him from the middle of the bush, “Moshe! Moshe!” He answered, “Here I am.” 5 He said, “Don’t come any closer! Take your sandals off your feet, because the place where you are standing is holy ground. 6 I am the God of your father,” he continued, “the God of Avraham, the God of Yitz’chak and the God of Ya‘akov.” Moshe covered his face, because he was afraid to look at God. 7 Adonai said, “I have seen how my people are being oppressed in Egypt and heard their cry for release from their slavemasters, because I know their pain. 8 I have come down to rescue them from the Egyptians and to bring them up out of that country to a good and spacious land, a land flowing with milk and honey, the place of the Kena‘ani, Hitti, Emori, P’rizi, Hivi and Y’vusi. 9 Yes, the cry of the people of Isra’el has come to me, and I have seen how terribly the Egyptians oppress them. 10 Therefore, now, come; and I will send you to Pharaoh; so that you can lead my people, the descendants of Isra’el, out of Egypt.”
11 Moshe said to God, “Who am I, that I should go to Pharaoh and lead the people of Isra’el out of Egypt?” 12 He replied, “I will surely be with you. Your sign that I have sent you will be that when you have led the people out of Egypt, you will worship God on this mountain.”
13 Moshe said to God, “Look, when I appear before the people of Isra’el and say to them, ‘The God of your ancestors has sent me to you’; and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ what am I to tell them?” 14 God said to Moshe, “Ehyeh Asher Ehyeh [I am/will be what I am/will be],” and added, “Here is what to say to the people of Isra’el: ‘Ehyeh [I Am or I Will Be] has sent me to you.’” 15 God said further to Moshe, “Say this to the people of Isra’el: ‘Yud-Heh-Vav-Heh [Adonai], the God of your fathers, the God of Avraham, the God of Yitz’chak and the God of Ya‘akov, has sent me to you.’ This is my name forever; this is how I am to be remembered generation after generation.
John Wesley's Notes-Commentary: Exodus 3:1-15
(Read all of Exodus 3)
Verse 1
[1] Now Moses kept the flock of Jethro his father in law, the priest of Midian: and he led the flock to the backside of the desert, and came to the mountain of God, even to Horeb.
Now Moses - The years of Moses's life are remarkably divided into three forties; the first forty he spent as a prince in Pharaoh's court, the second a shepherd in Midian, the third a king in Jeshurun. He had now finished his second forty when he received his commission to bring Israel out of Egypt. Sometimes it is long before God calls his servants out to that work which of old he designed them for. Moses was born to be Israel's deliverer, and yet not a word is said of it to him till he is eighty years of age.
Even to Horeb — Horeb and Sinai were two tops of the same mountain.
Verse 2
[2] And the angel of the LORD appeared unto him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush: and he looked, and, behold, the bush burned with fire, and the bush was not consumed.
And the angel of the Lord appeared to him — It was an extraordinary manifestation of the divine glory; what was visible was produced by the ministry of an angel, but he heard God in it speaking to him.
In a flame of fire — To shew that God was about to bring terror and destruction to his enemies, light and heat to his people, and to display his glory before all.
And the bush burned, and yet was not consumed — An emblem of the church now in bondage in Egypt, burning in the brick-kilns, yet not consumed; cast down, but not destroyed.
Verse 3
[3] And Moses said, I will now turn aside, and see this great sight, why the bush is not burnt.
I will turn aside and see — He speaks as one inquisitive, and bold in his inquiry; whatever it was, he would if possible know the meaning of it.
Verse 4
[4] And when the LORD saw that he turned aside to see, God called unto him out of the midst of the bush, and said, Moses, Moses. And he said, Here am I.
When the Lord saw that he turned aside to see it, God called to him — If he had carelessly neglected it, it is likely God had departed and said nothing to him.
God called and said, Moses, Moses — This which he heard could not but surprise him much more than what he saw. Divine calls are then effectual, when the spirit of God makes them particular, and calls us as by name. The Word calls, Ho, every one; the Spirit, by the application of that, calls, Ho, such a one; I know thee by name.
Here am I — Not only to hear what is said, but to do what I am bidden.
Verse 5
[5] And he said, Draw not nigh hither: put off thy shoes from off thy feet, for the place whereon thou standest is holy ground.
Put off thy shoes from off thy feet — The putting off the shoe was then what the putting off the hat is now, a token of respect and submission. The ground is holy ground, made so by this special manifestation of the divine presence. We ought to approach to God with a solemn pause and preparation; and to express our inward reverence, by a grave and reverent behaviour in the worship of God, carefully avoiding every thing that looks light, or rude.
Verse 6
[6] Moreover he said, I am the God of thy father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. And Moses hid his face; for he was afraid to look upon God.
I am the God of thy father — He lets him know it is God that speaks to him, to engage his reverence, faith and obedience. Thy father, thy pious father Amram, and the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, thy ancestors. Engaged to them by solemn covenant, which I am now come to perform.
And Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look upon God — The more we see of God, the more cause we shall see to worship him with reverence and godly fear. And even the manifestations of God's grace should increase our humble reverence of him.
Verse 8
[8] And I am come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians, and to bring them up out of that land unto a good land and a large, unto a land flowing with milk and honey; unto the place of the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites.
I am come down to deliver them — When God doth something very extraordinary, he is said to come down to do it, as Isaiah 64:1. This deliverance was typical of our redemption by Christ, and in that the eternal Word did indeed come down from heaven to deliver us.
A large land — So it was, according to its true and ancient bounds, as they are described, Genesis 15:18, and not according to those narrow limits, to which they were afterwards confined for their unbelief and impiety.
A land flowing with milk and honey — A proverbial expression, abounding with the choicest fruits, both for necessity and delight.
Verse 10
[10] Come now therefore, and I will send thee unto Pharaoh, that thou mayest bring forth my people the children of Israel out of Egypt.
I will send thee — And the same hand that now fetched a shepherd out of a desert to be the planter of the Jewish church, afterwards fetched fishermen from their ships to be the planters of the Christian church, that the excellency of the power might be of God.
Verse 11
[11] And Moses said unto God, Who am I, that I should go unto Pharaoh, and that I should bring forth the children of Israel out of Egypt?
Who am I? — He thinks himself unworthy of the honour and unable for the work. He thinks he wants courage, and therefore cannot go to Pharaoh: he thinks he wants conduct, and therefore cannot bring forth the children of Israel out of Egypt; they are unarmed, undisciplined, quite dispirited, utterly unable to help themselves, Moses was incomparably the fittest of any man living for this work, eminent for learning, wisdom, experience, valour, faith, holiness, and yet Who am I? The more fit any person is for service, commonly the less opinion he has of himself.
Verse 12
[12] And he said, Certainly I will be with thee; and this shall be a token unto thee, that I have sent thee: When thou hast brought forth the people out of Egypt, ye shall serve God upon this mountain.
Certainly I will be with thee — Those that are weak in themselves, yet may do wonders being strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. God's presence puts wisdom and strength into the weak and foolish, and is enough to answer all objections.
Verse 13
[13] And Moses said unto God, Behold, when I come unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto them, The God of your fathers hath sent me unto you; and they shall say to me, What is his name? what shall I say unto them?
When they shall say to me, What is his name? What shall I say unto them? — What name shall I use, whereby thou mayest be distinguished from false gods, and thy people may be encouraged to expect deliverance from thee?
Verse 14
[14] And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you.
And God said — Two names God would now be known by. 1. A name that speaks what he is in himself, I am that I am - This explains his name Jehovah, and signifies, 1st, That he is self-existent; he has his being of himself, and has no dependence upon any other. And being self-existent he cannot but be self-sufficient, and therefore all-sufficient, and the inexhaustible fountain of being and bliss. 2dly, That he is eternal and unchangeable, always the same, yesterday to-day, and for ever: he will be what he will be, and what he is. 3dly. That he is faithful and true to all his promises, unchangeable in his word as well as in his nature, and not a man that he should lie. Let Israel know this, I am hath sent me unto you. 2. A name that speaks what he is to his people. Lest that name I am should puzzle them, he is farther directed to make use of another name of God, more familiar.
Verse 15
[15] And God said moreover unto Moses, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, The LORD God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, hath sent me unto you: this is my name for ever, and this is my memorial unto all generations.
The Lord God of our fathers hath sent me unto you — Thus God made himself known, that he might revive among them the religion of their fathers, which was much decayed, and almost lost. And that he might raise their expectations of the speedy performance of the promises made unto their fathers: Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob are particularly named, because with Abraham the covenant was first made, and with Isaac and Jacob oft expressly renewed, and these three were distinguished from their brethren, and chosen to be the trustees of the covenant. This God will have to be his name for ever, and it has been, is, and will be his name, by which his worshippers know him, and distinguish him from all false gods.

"I Believe"
"Great Is Our God" by Chris Tomlin
1. Believe
Power of God
I Believe
I must be dreaming, but my eyes are still opened wide.
Feels like I'm floating, it's too wonderful to describe.
I was living darkness until Jesus came by and rescued me.
His touch held so much power, He opened my eyes and now I can see.
Chorus:
Because I believed everything that He said was true.
Yes I believe, just as sure as the sky is blue.
He is the King, and the Master of everything.
Jesus is King, Jesus is King.
2. I'm walking a brand new walk, sky's the limit that I can reach.
I was a crippled man, until I heard my Jesus preach.
I was burdened by sin, I could not even stand on my two feet.
He stretched out His hand and He lifted me up, He has set me free.
Chorus:
Because I believed everything that He said was true.
Yes I believe, just as sure as the sky is blue.
He is the King, and the Master of everything.
Jesus is King, Jesus is King.
3. So, bow down before Him, then shout out and praise Him...
'Cause Jesus is coming, my Jesus is coming.
Open your hearts and lift hands up to Heaven...
'Cause Jesus is coming, my Jesus is coming.
The skies will split open, the earth start to quake...
The trumpet will sound when my Jesus is coming again!
Chorus:
Because I believed everything that He said was true.
Yes I believe, just as sure as the sky is blue.
He is the King, and the Master of everything.
Jesus is King, Jesus is King.
1. The splendor of the King, clothed in majesty
Let all the earth rejoice
All the earth rejoice
2. He wraps himself in Light, and darkness tries to hide
And trembles at His voice
Trembles at His voice
3. How great is our God, sing with me
How great is our God, and all will see
How great, how great is our God
4. Age to age He stands
And time is in His hands
Beginning and the end
Beginning and the end
5. The Godhead Three in One
Father Spirit Son
The Lion and the Lamb
The Lion…

If you are reading this Sunday (3/5) or later you have already celebrated Ash Wednesday and the all church Rummage Sale which was Saturday March 4. Such is how Lent begins, full of activities, studies, special Worship, meditations and prayers.
Last Sunday's church bulletin featured a full colored photo of a never completed mountain sculpture created by a gentleman out of a hillside near Salton Sea in Southern California. Molly talked a bit about this tribute to Jesus called garish by many, unusual by most and inviting by those who stop to visit its creator. I first saw this in it's initial stage in the late 1940s as we drove around the area, curious about the Salton Sea. Then recently on a Public Broadcast Channel re-run of Huelle Howser, he interviewed the artist, and told the complete story of the mountain's creation and continuing work with the story of how, who, when and what it is all about. It's one man's contribution in an attempt to tell the world about Jesus and His God. If you are ever on this highway, you cannot miss it.
This Year Easter comes April 16 and already our Director of music has arranged a Brass Sextet to begin Worship with the greatest of fanfares. Lucky me....I get to play with these wonderful musicians once again. It always a thrill for me, but if you are not there a couple of minutes before 10:30 AM, you'll miss the most spectacular part of the brass group. You will, however, hear us join in other music during the Easter Services.
Last Sunday's pot-luck following Worship was as well attended as any we've ever had lately. There was plenty of food for everyone and it was delicious. Be wise and plan to attend the next pot-luck which may be the last Sunday of March, the 26th. You'll have to watch the church calendar because sometimes they skip a month.

Hillsong Church is a Pentecostal megachurch based in Sydney, Australia. Founded by Brian and Bobbie Houston in August of 1983, the church grew to the point where the word "megachurch" is utterly redefined by them, with campuses in Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Newcastle, Gold Coast and Noosa. In addition, they have international churches in London, Bermondsey (Greater London), Oxford, Guildford, Kent and Newcastle (United Kingdom), Cape Town and Pretoria (South Africa), Kiev (Ukraine), Paris, Lyon and Marseille (France), Konstanz and Duesseldorf (Germany), Stockholm, Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Barcelona, Moscow, Buenos Aires, São Paulo, Los Angeles, New York, New Jersey and 3 campuses scheduled to open this year in Arizona.
The band Hillsong United was formed in 1998 from close friends within the Hillsong youth ministry (called "Powerhouse Youth"). So many songs were being written within the youth ministry that it was suggested they make an album. The songs One and Everyday were recorded and released with the annual Hillsong worship album in 1999. They both achieved gold sales status in Australia, and the band has gone on to win five Dove Awards in 2014 and were nominated for an American Music Award and won the Billboard Music Award Top Christian Artist in 2015. Their song This I Believe was released on the 2014 album No Other Name.
Chris Tomlin was born in Texas in 1972 and learned to play guitar by playing along with Willy Nelson recordings. He has become one of the dominant forces in contemporary Christian music, and in 2012 CCLI announced that his songs were played 3 million times in churches that year. His 2013 album Burning Lights debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, only the fourth Christian album ever to open at No. 1, and he was pronounced the most sung songwriter in the world that year. The song God Of This City was written by a worship band from Belfast, Ireland called Bluetree. They composed the piece (and I'm not making this up!) in Padia, Thailand at a bar that also doubled as a brothel. Chris Tomlin heard the song at concert of worship bands in Belfast when the band took him aside and played the song for him. He was so inspired by the message that he gave the song his own unique treatment and recorded it on the 2008 album Passion: God Of This City, which won the Dove Award in 2009 for Special Event Album of the Year.
Craig Courtney is one of the dominant forces in the world of church anthems. He is currently the Executive Music Editor for Beckenhorst Press in Columus, Ohio, and was the protégé of the founder, the legendary John Ness Beck. What his resume doesn't tell you is how he started composing (I got this information one day over coffee with him). He was a staff piano teacher at the famous Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria. Sitting in his cubicle, day after day, waiting for piano students to arrive (or not), he began to improvise and noodle. This brought about his first big publication, Thy Will Be Done (which we happen to have in our library). This week's anthem, Great Is Our God, was, like most of his publications these days, a commission which he subsequently published.
