Reflecting God Embrace Holy Living - Word Action - The Nazarene Publishing House [The Foundry Publishing House] in Kansas City, Missouri, United States - The Global Church of the Nazarene for Thursday, 27 July 2017 - Worship In Complete Trust" by Jerry Frye - Job 1:12-22
Job 1:12 Adonai said to the Adversary, “Here! Everything he has is in your hands, except that you are not to lay a finger on his person.” Then the Adversary went out from the presence of Adonai.
13 One day when Iyov’s sons and daughters were eating and drinking in their oldest brother’s house, 14 a messenger came to him and said, “The oxen were plowing, with the donkeys grazing near them, 15 when a raiding party from Sh’va came and carried them off; they put the servants to the sword too, and I’m the only one who escaped to tell you.”
16 While he was still speaking, another one came and said, “Fire from God fell from the sky and burned up the sheep and the servants; it completely destroyed them, and I’m the only one who escaped to tell you.”
17 While he was still speaking, another one came and said, “The Kasdim, three bands of them, fell on the camels and carried them off; they put the servants to the sword too, and I’m the only one who escaped to tell you.”
18 While he was still speaking, another one came and said, “Your sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother’s house, 19 when suddenly a strong wind blew in from over the desert. It struck the four corners of the house, so that it fell on the young people; they are dead, and I’m the only one who escaped to tell you.”
20 Iyov got up, tore his coat, shaved his head, fell down on the ground and worshipped; 21 he said,
“Naked I came from my mother’s womb,
and naked I will return there.
Adonai gave; Adonai took;
blessed be the name of Adonai.”
22 In all this Iyov neither committed a sin nor put blame on God.

I think all of us would be better if we read the Book of Job occasionally. It helps put things in perspective. Satan underestimated Job’s trust in God. He thought Job only loved God because God had blessed him abundantly. Satan began by taking Job’s “stuff”. When that didn’t work, he attacked Job’s family. I’ve heard people say there is no way to measure the loss of a child. Parents aren't suppose to outlive their children. Parents aren't suppose to outlive their children. Parents aren't suppose to outlive their children. Job lost all ten of his. Can you imagine his grief? Only God could provide the grace and comfort Job must have felt to proclaim, “The LORD gave and the LORD has taken away; may the name of the LORD be praised” (Job 1:21). Is it possible to be that close to God?
My “go to” verse in times of struggle is Psalm 56:3-4: “When I am afraid, I put my trust in you. In God, whose word I praise–in God I trust and am not afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?” You could replace “afraid” in those verses with any challenge or threat. Job chose to trust God in spite of his circumstances. What do you need to trust God with?
Hymn for Today:
"Have Thine Own Way" by Adelaide A. Pollard
1. Have thine own way, Lord! Have thine own way!
Thou art the potter, I am the clay.
Mold me and make me after thy will,
while I am waiting, yielded and still.
2. Have thine own way, Lord! Have thine own way!
Search me and try me, Savior today!
Wash me just now, Lord, wash me just now,
as in thy presence humbly I bow.
3. Have thine own way, Lord! Have thine own way!
Wounded and weary, help me I pray!
Power, all power, surely is thine!
Touch me and heal me, Savior divine!
4. Have thine own way, Lord! Have thine own way!
Hold o'er my being absolute sway.
Fill with thy Spirit till all shall see
Christ only, always, living in me!
Thought for Today:
Rejoice in your hope, be patient in your troubles, and continue steadfastly in prayer.[Romans 12:12].
