The Upper Room Daily Devotional in Nashville, Tennessee, United States "THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD" for Monday, 31 July 2017 - Read John 12:44-50

John 12:44 Yeshua declared publicly, “Those who put their trust in me are trusting not merely in me, but in the One who sent me. 45 Also those who see me see the One who sent me. 46 I have come as a light into the world, so that everyone who trusts in me might not remain in the dark. 47 If anyone hears what I am saying and does not observe it, I don’t judge him; for I did not come to judge the world, but to save the world. 48 Those who reject me and don’t accept what I say have a judge — the word which I have spoken will judge them on the Last Day. 49 For I have not spoken on my own initiative, but the Father who sent me has given me a command, namely, what to say and how to say it. 50 And I know that his command is eternal life. So what I say is simply what the Father has told me to say.”

Jesus said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” [John 8:12 (NIV)]
Both our home and the church where my wife and I serve are located outside the city. This allows me the opportunity to truly appreciate the wonders of nature day and night. I particularly enjoy the radiance of the full moon spilling its light across the countryside.
The moon has no light source of its own but reflects the sun’s light. Yet while the moon orbits Earth approximately every 27 days, its gravitational forces are at work all the time affecting the tides, among other things.
Today’s reading reminds us that Jesus Christ is the light of the world, and we are to encourage others by sharing that light in our lives. Like the moon, we do not own the light but reflect the light supplied continuously by our own light source, Jesus Christ. The light of Christ is for all people, and when we reflect that light, we live in hope that all the world will “have the light of life.”
