Beirut, Lebanon
Syrian refugee discovers Christ through Lebanon churchAs Naseef helped his parents toil in the fields of the family farm in Syria, he dreamt of a different life. Someday, he told himself, he would become finance manager in a corporation.
Naseef was well on his way to realizing his dream when he enrolled at university to study his passion: economics. But the Syrian civil war broke out in 2011 and shattered his dream.
The Syrian government began drafting young university men into the army. However, they did not draft men who failed in their studies. Some students deliberately failed for two years to avoid government military service. Not wanting to participate in the war, he made the painful decision to fail out of university.
Naseef took a job in a small glass shop and rejoined his family with their farm work. The war came to Naseef’s area of Syria in 2013. When the government sent about 200 troops to fight the opposition forces, the village showed them hospitality. Naseef’s family took 10 of the young soldiers into their house, fed them, and became their friends. They exchanged contact information so they could stay in touch.
After the soldiers moved on to a more intense area of the fight, Naseef and his neighbors could not get any responses from their new friends. They later learned the horrifying news: all the soldiers had been massacred in an ambush. Rumors and fears circulated about traitors.
Naseef says that this was the reason why many young Syrian men are so afraid to join the military.
“It’s not like I’m fighting for my country," Naseef said. "I’m going to die because of the traitors."
Naseef’s family decided to send him to Lebanon to save his life. He moved into a house with other refugee friends near the Beirut Church of the Nazarene. One day, Naseef was invited by a friend to the church. He was greeted with a warm welcome by the people. Fascinated by the teachings, he began attending regularly. Naseef was raised in another denomination. To Naseef, his family, and his village, going to church was simply a religious practice.
“In our village, even the priests do not know much about Jesus, like how many years He lived on the earth," Naseef said. "Many people living there in the village do not know about Jesus, so I got to know Jesus in the church. I learned more and more in the church... and I asked Pastor Andrew to get baptized."
Hungry to know Jesus personally, he began reading his Bible every day. Naseef's pastor, Andrew, noticed.
“One day, he shared with me how he woke up and experienced a wonderful joy in his heart, and he knew that the Lord has touched his heart, and he is God’s son now,” said Pastor Andrew. “He reads the Bible faithfully and knows verses by heart. He witnesses to his Syrian friends through Facebook, and he is helping us now with the follow-up of the Syrians who come to the church.”
Naseef joined the church as a member and was baptized this month with several other young people. Unfortunately, Naseef ran out of the funds he had brought with him to Lebanon. The Beirut Church of the Nazarene helped him find a place to stay, as they have done with other refugees. Unable to find a job because of his refugee status, Naseef spends his days in the church’s kitchen, assisting the three women who cook more than 100 hot meals per week for the church’s educational program for Syrian refugee children. He also helps clean the church and classrooms.
“I believe that the Holy Spirit lives in me and I’m ready to serve and tell about Jesus,” Naseef said. [Church of the Nazarene Eurasia Region]

Mississippi churches break down racial barriers through merger
Jackson, Mississippi

(The Clarion-Ledger, 28 July) New Vision Church of the Nazarene is knocking down walls — walls between cultures, races and churches.
Two discrete Nazarene churches merged last year, one predominately African-American and the other predominately white, under an African-American pastor, for the first time in Mississippi history, according to Pastor Robert Lanier.
New Vision was the product of this unification in April 2016. This weekend, the church celebrates its one-year anniversary a few months late.
"We see it as a move of God in our midst," Lanier said of the merger.

The Reformation(s) of the Church
Looking back on the Protestant Reformation reminds us of God's continual desire to be in right relationship with His Church. Charles W. Christian, the new managing editor of Holiness Today, takes us through an introduction to the Protestant Reformation that approaches its 500th anniversary this fall. The Reformation will be featured in Holiness Today’s Sept/Oct 2017 Issue.

Reformation before Luther
Though the catalyst to the series of events known today as the Protestant Reformation was sparked in 1517 by Martin Luther’s posting of his 95 theses to the church doors at Wittenburg, the Church had long before been engaged in the process of reformation. In fact, one could argue that ever since the fall of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, God has been reforming. The Church continues its process of reformation today.
The Prophets of the Old Testament were constantly reminding the people of God that God was patiently seeking to reform them.
The coming of Jesus and the new Kingdom He embodied was a clarification of the reform that God had been attempting throughout the Old Testament. Even after the resurrection of Jesus, the disciples felt the need for ongoing reform. The experience of Pentecost in Acts 2 assisted the Church in carrying out the admonition of Jesus (Matthew 28) to “go into all the world,” because the Kingdom of God defies societal limitations and borders.
The work of God among the Gentiles through the ministries of Peter and Paul added another dimension of reform, culminating in key agreements among early church leaders in Acts 15. Through the words of Paul and other writers, the rest of the New Testament demonstrates a variety of “mini-reforms” needed among a growing and changing constituency. God lovingly and consistently reforms the Church.
The “next generation” believers, commonly referred to as the Church Fathers and Mothers, experienced a myriad of reformation opportunities, the best known of which were the Ecumenical Councils and the formulation of creeds in the first eight centuries of the Church’s history. These steps toward reformation led to unity among several groups, but also resulted in schisms. Most notably, the Eastern and Western branches of the Church (the Orthodox and the Roman Catholic groups, respectively) experienced an official schism in 1054 A.D.
On Luther’s Doorstep and Beyond
Reformation has always been a part of the Church’s conversation about itself.
Around the time of Martin Luther, the stage had been set for a particularly earth-shaking renewal. A century before Luther, for example, a Czech priest and professor named Jan Hus (1369-1415) had been put to death for writings and protests regarding the actions of key church leaders. In fact, after Luther posted his 95 theses, many began referring to Luther as a “modern Huss-ite.” Many factors surrounding Luther’s contribution to reformation in the early sixteenth century, such as his education, the invention of Gutenburg’s printing press, and Luther’s powerful friends, allowed Luther’s message to transcend the confines of his village and of Germany and become a key catalyst of reforms already taking place throughout the world. From there came other movements: Calvinists, Arminians, Anabaptists, Quakers, Puritans, and Wesleyans, just to name a few.

Flags of the Nations: Aruba
The flag of Aruba consists of a red star and two yellow stripes. The red star represents the four points of the compass, with the island having drawn people from around the world. The star also represents the island itself, surrounded by the beautiful blue sea. The horizontal yellow stripes denote the free and separate position Aruba enjoys in the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The blue represents the sea that surrounds Aruba; yellow is the color of abundance, representing the island's past and its industries of gold, aloe, and oil; red is for the love each Aruban has for the country and the ancient industry of Brazilwood; and white symbolizes the snow-white beaches as well as the purity of the hearts of Aruba's people who strive for justice, order and liberty.
Since September 1, 2009, the Church of the Nazarene's Global Ministry Center (GMC) proudly flies a flag each week of one of the many nations in which the denomination is present in ministry. Leaders were invited to send a national flag to be flown at the GMC alongside the flag of the United States*. The national flags rotate weekly, and photos of them raised are sent to the church leaders of that country.
This week: Aruba
The Church of the Nazarene officially entered Aruba in 2000.
Aruba had a population of 113,648 in 2016. That same year, Aruba reported one Church of the Nazarene, which is officially organized. Aruba has 529 total members.
Aruba is part of the Suriname District, a Phase 1 district on the Mesoamerica Region. For more information about the Mesoamerica Region, visit mesoamericaregion.org.
* = The weekly highlighted flag is raised on the middle of three poles in compliance with U.S. government protocols. It flies to the left of the GMC host-nation United States flag, which flies above the host-state flag of Kansas. The Christian flag flies on the third pole.
