Caregiving in the News
We're so unprepared for finding an Alzheimer's treatment
Washington Post | November 15, 2017
"The U.S. health-care system is unprepared to cope with the Alzheimer's crisis - even if there were a treatment in the near future, according to a new study. If there were a treatment for Alzheimer's in 2020, the study found that people would have to wait a year and a half for access because of a shortage of specialists and equipment to diagnose and treat the disease. An estimated 2.1 million people could develop dementia while waiting for treatment over the next two decades, researchers found."
Emerging innovations in managed long-term services and supports for family caregivers
AARP | November 3, 2017
The AARP Public Policy Institute has released a new paper on Emerging Innovations in Managed Long-Term Services and Supports (LTSS) for Family Caregivers. This paper provides direct insights from managed care leaders about family caregiver supports. It highlights examples of how progressive managed care plans are supporting family caregivers who are caring for plan members with LTSS needs. This emerging innovations paper is part of a new series of the 2017 LTSS State Scorecard that highlights what LTSS innovations states and organizations are developing, piloting, or testing.
Holiday visits are opportunity for long distance caregivers to assess aging parents care needs
Assisted Living Locators | November 16, 2017
"The holidays bring families together. In fact, it may be the only opportunity that long-distance caregivers and family members have to observe their aging parents well-being. The number of caregivers considered long distance is significant. According to a study conducted by the National Alliance of Caregiving, in collaboration with AARP, 15% of the estimated 34 million Americans who provide care to older family members live an hour or more away from their relative."
The long-term care benefit many Veterans are missing out on
Next Avenue (Joan Lunden) | November 10, 2017
"The Veterans Aid & Attendance Pension Benefit, or "A&A benefit," provides up to $1,794 per month to a veteran, $1,153 to a surviving spouse or $2,127 to a couple. The money, which is tax-free, can be used for in-home care, board and care, an assisted living community or a private-pay nursing home. This is helpful for many vets and their families because neither Medicare nor Medicaid pays for assisted living care. It's kind of like a private nursing home insurance policy you haven't had to pay into."
Caregivers need help navigating the opioid crisis
Washington Examiner | November 12, 2017
"Politicians, pharmaceutical companies, physicians, patients, attorneys, law enforcement, and the common citizen have all weighed in on the public health emergency we know as the opioid crisis. Yet one demographic, with significant input into this issue, has received little or no mention in the discourse of chronic pain patients and opioids. That would be the 65 million and growing population of family caregivers."
The cost of caregiving
Parade | November 15, 2017
"If you think that caregivers only assist with physical necessities, prepare for a shock: While 64% provide physical care, far more offer financial support (92%), according to a study from wealth management firm Merrill Lynch and research firm Age Wave. The study, based on a nationwide sample of more than 2,000 caregivers, is part of a multiyear research series that examines five life stages: early adulthood, parenting, caregiving, widowhood and end of life."

Family caregivers and those at-risk for a fall can be partners and participants in falls prevention. The good news is that falling is not a normal part of aging. The toolkit and other resources for family caregivers will be shared on Tuesday, November 28th at 4:00 PM ET in a national webinar. Stay tuned for the registration link.
