Reflecting God – Embrace Holy Living - WordAction - The Foundry Publishing House of Kansas City, Missouri, United States - The Global Church of the Nazarene for Friday, 17 November 2017 "Spirit of Power" by Renee DeVault - 2 Timothy 1:3-12
2 Timothy 1:3 I give thanks to God, whom, like my forbears, I worship with a clean conscience, as I regularly remember you in my prayers night and day. 4 I am reminded of your tears, and I long to see you, so that I might be filled with joy. 5 I recall your sincere trust, the same trust that your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice had first; and I am convinced that you too now have this trust.
6 For this reason, I am reminding you to fan the flame of God’s gift, which you received through s’mikhah from me. 7 For God gave us a Spirit who produces not timidity, but power, love and self-discipline. 8 So don’t be ashamed of bearing testimony to our Lord or to me, his prisoner. On the contrary, accept your share in suffering disgrace for the sake of the Good News. God will give you the strength for it, 9 since he delivered us and called us to a life of holiness as his people. It was not because of our deeds, but because of his own purpose and the grace which he gave to us who are united with the Messiah Yeshua. He did this before the beginning of time, 10 but made it public only now through the appearing of our Deliverer, the Messiah Yeshua, who abolished death and, through the Good News, revealed life and immortality.
11 It was for this Good News that I was appointed a proclaimer, emissary and teacher of the Goyim; 12 and this is why I suffer as I do. But I am not ashamed, because I know him in whom I have put my trust, and I am persuaded that he can keep safe until that Day what he has entrusted to me.

Telling everybody about the gospel seems like an easy enough method of accomplishing the mission Christ has given us, but putting this into practice can be terrifying. The fear of rejection or persecution can sometimes overshadow the motivation to achieve our mission.
Paul was not unaware of the danger of spreading the good news generously. He himself suffered as he encouraged others to suffer for Christ. Similarly, Jesus was not a hopeless optimist when he commissioned us. He told us that the world would hate us when we belong to His kingdom (John 15:19). Both Paul and Jesus knew what they were telling people to risk, and both point us to the same source of security and power to overcome this fear–the Holy Spirit. Jesus called the Holy Spirit our gift to help us (John 14:26) and Paul called Him a Spirit of power.
The Holy Spirit will lead us and strengthens us to persevere in our mission even when faced with outward opposition and inward fear. Paul encourages us to entrust everything daily to God and to call on the power of the Holy Spirit. At all times, He is within us and available to us. ---
Hymn for Today:
"I Surrender All" by Judson W. Van Deventer
1. All to Jesus I surrender,
All to Him I freely give;
I will ever love and trust Him,
In His presence daily live.
Refrain: I surrender all,
I surrender all;
All to Thee, my blessed Savior,
I surrender all.
2. All to Jesus I surrender,
Humbly at His feet I bow;
Worldly pleasures all forsaken,
Take me, Jesus, take me now.
Refrain: I surrender all,
I surrender all;
All to Thee, my blessed Savior,
I surrender all.
3. All to Jesus I surrender,
Make me, Savior, wholly Thine;
Let me feel the Holy Spirit,
Truly know that Thou art mine.
Refrain: I surrender all,
I surrender all;
All to Thee, my blessed Savior,
I surrender all.
4. All to Jesus I surrender,
Lord, I give myself to Thee;
Fill me with Thy love and power,
Let Thy blessing fall on me.
Refrain: I surrender all,
I surrender all;
All to Thee, my blessed Savior,
I surrender all.
5. All to Jesus I surrender,
Now I feel the sacred flame;
Oh, the joy of full salvation!
Glory, glory, to His Name!
Refrain: I surrender all,
I surrender all;
All to Thee, my blessed Savior,
I surrender all.

Thought for Today:
and I will ask the Father, and he will give you another comforting Counselor like me, the Spirit of Truth, to be with you forever. The world cannot receive him, because it neither sees nor knows him. You know him, because he is staying with you and will be united with you.(John 14:16-17a)
