Caregiving in the News
Research brief: Medicare spending on older adults who need long-term services and supports
Long-Term Quality Alliance - October 30, 2017
"In this new Research Brief, LTQA and Johns Hopkins University researchers analyze the 2011 National Health and Aging Trends Study survey data linked to Medicare claims, and find that Medicare spends nearly three times as much per capita on the 13 percent of older adults who need long-term services and supports as on the remaining 87 percent of older beneficiaries without such needs."
100 aging, work experts call on Congress to address caregiving crisis with strong paid leave plan
National Partnership for Women and Families - November 1, 2017
"For National Family Caregivers Month, 113 of the nation's leading researchers on aging, work and family issues sent a first-of-its-kind letter to Congress today urging lawmakers to address rapidly growing demand for care by establishing a national paid family and medical leave policy. Specifically, the experts call for speedy passage of a comprehensive, inclusive national policy like the Family And Medical Insurance Leave (FAMILY) Act."
New survey reveals gen X blindsided by caregiving role
Legacy Navigator - November 1, 2017
"A survey released today by Legacy Navigator revealed the role of caregiving has significantly evolved as more people, particularly Gen Xers, identify as caregivers. The 'Legacy Navigator National Care Survey' found that over 80% of the participants identified as a caregiver. While many people (69% female / 31% male) identified as caregiver, only 30% said they 'felt very prepared to make estate decisions and knew what was expected of me.' Request the survey here.
National poll on healthy aging
University of Michigan - November 1, 2017
"Family caregivers play a vital role in providing support to older adults living with dementia and other cognitive impairments. This report focuses on unpaid dementia caregivers, family and friends who help people with memory problems manage health
issues and provide personal care. The University of Michigan National Poll on Healthy Aging asked a national sample of adults age 50-80 about their experiences caring for a person with dementia."
Stories help caregiving pros know the person within
Next Avenue (Adam Wahlberg) - November 1, 2017
"It's all part of Newton-Small's effort to build empathy among families and caregivers, and in the health care industry. By many measures, more empathy is needed. Caregiving can be extremely stressful. It's a hard job to do whether you're a professional or providing care for a loved one. Plus, we need more caregivers. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that this country will require 1.3 million more professional caregivers by 2022. To Newton-Small's eyes, storytelling, done MemoryWell's way, may be part of the answer."
Laughter as the best medicine for caregivers
HuffPost (Anthony Cirillo) - November 1, 2017
"I had the pleasure to interview Breeda Miller, CEO of Breeda Miller Speaking, for our Caregiver Smile Summit. A sandwich generation caregiver, she shared insights on how to relieve the caregiver burden with humor and laughter. In the very serious industry of healthcare, it is often hard to bring humor into the situation. Yet the benefits of humor and laughing can be as good as spending that forty-five minutes on the treadmill. So, get off the treadmill and laugh a little."

Falls Prevention Webinar
November 28, 2017 - Webinar
We're honored to partner with the National Coalition on Aging on a series of resources for family caregivers of older adults. Many caregivers may not realize that 1 in 4 adults over the age of 65 falls every year, injuring themselves and often exacerbating other conditions of aging. Family caregivers and those at-risk for a fall can be partners and participants in falls prevention. The good news is that falling is not a normal part of aging.
The toolkit and other resources for family caregivers will be shared on Tuesday, November 28th at 3:00 PM ET in a national webinar. Stay tuned for the registration link.
