The Redondo Beach, California, United States First United Methodist Church eNews for Thursday, 19 April 2018: "Half-Truths Sermon Series" "A half-truth: God helps those who help themselves. Sunday worship at 8:30am and 10:30am."

The Redondo Beach, California, United States First United Methodist Church eNews for Thursday, 19 April 2018: "Half-Truths Sermon Series" "A half-truth: God helps those who help themselves. Sunday worship at 8:30am and 10:30am."
From Pastor Molly: God helps those...
I look up to the mountains; does my strength come from mountains?
No, my strength comes from God, who made heaven, and earth, and mountains.
(Psalm 121:1-2, The Message)
This Sunday is Earth Day. As Christians we celebrate the day not only because the earth is beautiful, and because it's our home--we honor the earth as God's world. With humility and gratitude, we recognize the wonder, complexity and integrity of God's creation.
We're also considering another half-true phrase that Christians often use, about how "God helps those who help themselves." Our Earth Day worship will remember the good news that God provides abundant gifts, both to the helpful and the helpless. We stand as recipients of blessings we cannot earn, and we inhabit a wondrous world we could not manufacture.
So in awe and gratitude, we come to give worship to God. We tune our hearts in to God's movement in our midst, and seek to be the people who live and share divine love.
Grace and peace,
Pastor Molly

This Sunday, composer Sharon Farber will be with us in worship, and we will hear and sing many of her songs during the 10:30 service. I'm grateful that she can be with us, and trust you will help welcome her. It's a great occasion to invite someone new to worship with us, too!
In Worship This Week
Sunday, April 22:
Rev. Molly Vetter, preaching
1 John 3:13-24
"Half-true: God helps those who help themselves"
1 John 3:
13 Don’t be amazed, brothers, if the world hates you. 14 We, for our part, know that we have passed from death to life because we keep loving the brothers. The person who fails to keep on loving is still under the power of death. 15 Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life in him.
16 The way that we have come to know love is through his having laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers! 17 If someone has worldly possessions and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how can he be loving God? 18 Children, let us love not with words and talk, but with actions and in reality!
19 Here is how we will know that we are from the truth and will set our hearts at rest in his presence: 20 if our hearts know something against us, God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything. 21 Dear friends, if our hearts know nothing against us, we have confidence in approaching God; 22 then, whatever we ask for, we receive from him; because we are obeying his commands and doing the things that please him.
23 This is his command: that we are to trust in the person and power of his Son Yeshua the Messiah and to keep loving one another, just as he commanded us. 24 Those who obey his commands remain united with him and he with them.
Here is how we know that he remains united with us: by the Spirit whom he gave us.
(Complete Jewish Bible)
1 John 3:13-24
Verse 13
[13] Marvel not, my brethren, if the world hate you.
Marvel not if the world hate you — For the same cause.
Verse 14
[14] We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother abideth in death.
We know — As if he had said, We ourselves could not love our brethren, unless we were passed from spiritual death to life, that is, born of God.
He that loveth not his brother abideth in death — That is, is not born of God. And he that is not born of God, cannot love his brother.
Verse 15
[15] Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him.
He, I say, abideth in spiritual death, is void of the life of God. For whosoever hateth his brother, and there is no medium between loving and hating him, is, in God's account, a murderer: every degree of hatred being a degree of the same temper which moved Cain to murder his brother.
And no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him — But every loving believer hath. For love is the beginning of eternal life. It is the same, in substance, with glory.
Verse 16
[16] Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.
The word God is not in the original. It was omitted by the apostle just as the particular name is omitted by Mary, when she says to the gardener, "Sir, if thou hast borne him hence;" and by the church, when she says, "Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth," Song of Solomon 1:2; in both which places there is a language, a very emphatical language, even in silence. It declares how totally the thoughts were possessed by the blessed and glorious subject. It expresses also the superlative dignity and amiableness of the person meant, as though He, and He alone, was, or deserved to be, both known and admired by all.
Because he laid down his life — Not merely for sinners, but for us in particular. From this truth believed, from this blessing enjoyed, the love of our brethren takes its rise, which may very justly be admitted as an evidence that our faith is no delusion.
Verse 17
[17] But whoso hath this world's good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him?
But whoso hath this world's good — Worldly substance, far less valuable than life.
And seeth his brother have need — The very sight of want knocks at the door of the spectator's heart.
And shutteth up — Whether asked or not.
His bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him — Certainly not at all, however he may talk, 1 John 3:18, of loving God.
Verse 18
[18] My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.
Not in word — Only.
But in deed — In action: not in tongue by empty professions, but in truth.
Verse 19
[19] And hereby we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before him.
And hereby we know — We have a farther proof by this real, operative love.
That we are of the truth — That we have true faith, that we are true children of God.
And shall assure our hearts before him — Shall enjoy the assurance of his favour, and the "testimony of a good conscience toward God." The heart, in St. John's language, is the conscience. The word conscience is not found in his writings.
Verse 20
[20] For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things.
For if we have not this testimony, if in anything our heart, our own conscience, condemn us, much more does God, who is greater than our heart - An infinitely holier and a more impartial Judge.
And knoweth all things — So that there is no hope of hiding it from him.
Verse 21
[21] Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, then have we confidence toward God.
If our heart condemn us not — If our conscience, duly enlightened by the word and Spirit of God, and comparing all our thoughts, words, and works with that word, pronounce that they agree therewith.
Then have we confidence toward God — Not only our consciousness of his favour continues and increases, but we have a full persuasion, that whatsoever we ask we shall receive of him.
Verse 23
[23] And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment.
And this is his commandment — All his commandments in one word.
That we should believe and love — in the manner and degree which he hath taught. This is the greatest and most important command that ever issued from the throne of glory. If this be neglected, no other can be kept: if this be observed, all others are easy.
Verse 24
[24] And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us.
And he that keepeth his commandments — That thus believes and loves.
Abideth in him, and God in him: and hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us — Which witnesses with our spirits that we are his children, and brings forth his fruits of peace, love, holiness. This is the transition to the treating of the Holy Spirit which immediately follows

Special Music, featuring composer Sharon Farber: "As You Walk with Me," "Selach Lanu," "Haleluya" and more.
"All That I Need Is You"
Lord, You know it's been a busy day
And I'm just weary to my bones
I hope You'll understand if I don't pray
But I need my rest to carry on
Why do I kid myself, You see my heart
The me I try so to ignore
And Lord You know how very weak I am
I just can't hide it any more
[Chorus:]
All of a sudden I knew
That I'd never be wanting as long as I'm leaning on You
Oh Lord, all that I need is You
Everytime when the doubting comes
And I seem to lose my way
When I cry within 'cause I need a friend
But I just don't say
You know that I need You
All at once it's clear, even though You're here
I've tried to make it on my own
I'm not trusting You
Lord, you know that I really need our time together
Only Your strength can see me through
So talk with me now
As You walk with me now in this quiet time
I'm waiting on You
Cause...

Last Sunday's printed order of worship announced the passing of one of our church's most beloved Assistant Pastors, Rev. W. Murray Gibbons who served here 1961-63. I remember after his retirement how much he enjoyed announcing that his move to South Carolina was his best ever, especially that unique address of 8115 Puddin Swamp Road at Turbeville, SC. He loved mentioning that at every new introduction. Murray made special friends here at our Redondo Beach Church and everywhere he went. Our memory of his love will last as long as we do and beyond, thank the Lord.
Last Sunday we baptized one and brought into membership 16 others so let us hope each reader steps forward to get acquainted as the days go on and we get to know the newcomers while at church.
I saw the list of summer camps and learned there were five camps running in ages from 1st grade to a senior in high school. As a former member of the Methodist Church Summer camps, and later a faculty member, I remember the long lasting friendships made there and the fact that attending Annual Conferences in Redlands years later kept the friendships alive for years. It is strange that one can remember such people many years later in life. Summer camps can influence and last nearly forever.
Remembering friends...at last Monday's men's breakfast we were, once again, visited by Gene Koester and Chad Ahrens who come from time to time. It's always great to see either of them and catch up on family and things such as their lives, etc. It was Gene Koester who wrote such a great history of our stained glass window for the dedication of its repair and adding the cross placement Sunday, November 4, 2001 with Rev. Stanley Ferguson officiating. Our office has a copy if you may be so interested in reading about it. You may also talk to Church Historian Paul Caldwell about that document.

Half-Truths: Sermon Series after Easter
They are simple phrases. They sound Christian—like something you might find in the Bible. We’ve all heard these words. Maybe we’ve said them. They capture some element of truth, yet they miss the point in important ways.
Join us for a sermon series that tackles some common Christian clichés that don't get it all right:
Love the sinner, hate the sin.
God helps those who help themselves.
God won’t give you more than you can handle.
God said it, I believe it, that settles it.
This five-week sermon series continues to May 6!
Half-Truths: The Small Group
Join us Thursdays from 7-8pm in May Day Parlor, through May 10.
Go deeper in conversation, and connect to others in community with our 5-week "Half-Truths" small group. We'll talk about the ideas from Pastor Molly's sermon and Adam Hamilton's book. Led by Liz Gyori.

This week we will see the kickoff of our new "Composer Series". My idea is to feature, throughout the service, the music of a local, living composer, and have that composer with us so we can meet them afterwards. My first choice for this series also happened to be available and willing to join us, my good friend and marvelous composer Sharon Farber.
Four times Emmy Award Nominated, Winner of the 2013 Society of Composers and Lyricists Award for "Outstanding work in the Art of Film Music", the 2012 Visionary Award In Music by The Women's International Film & Television Showcase, and winner of the Telly Award, composer Sharon Farber is a celebrated Film, TV and Concert music composer.
A summa com laude graduate of the Berklee College of Music (dual major in concert composition and film scoring), Sharon has many national and international credits to her name, including The Los Angeles Master Chorale, Pacific Serenades Ensemble, The Israeli Chamber Orchestra, Orange County Women's Chorale, The Northwest Sinfonietta, the Bellingham Symphony, The Culver City Symphony Orchestra, The Jewish Symphony Orchestra, iPalpiti Artists International, Las Colinas Symphony and more. Sharon's song cycles were recorded by GRAMMY winner Soprano Hila Plitmann and GRAMMY nominee, Soprano Sharon Rostorf- Zamir.
In the Film and Television world, Sharon has been working with networks and cable broadcasters like NBC, CBS, Showtime and the WB as well as writing music for feature films. Her score for the film "When Nietzsche Wept" (Millennium Films) was commercially release and performed live in film music concerts and she has recently completed the score for the movie "AZIMUTH" (winter release.). Sharon's upcoming projects include a slate of movies for Aegis film group and the thrillers "The Dark Return of Time" and The X-Gene project.
The International Film Music Critics Association wrote about Sharon's music "Israeli-born composer Sharon Farber wowed the crowd with a suite of music from three of her scores: "Children of the Fall", "When Nietzsche Wept" and "The Dove Flyer""...
Sharon's acclaimed concerto for cello, orchestra and narrator, "Bestemming", based on the remarkable life story of Holocaust survivor and hero of the Dutch resistance, Curt Lowens, has received many performance since its creation, recently on a 4 city tour of the Pacific Northwest, with renowned cellist Amit Peled, conducted by Maestro Yaniv, who said: "Sharon Farber is definitely one of the most exciting and versatile voices on the contemporary music scene today. I fell in love with "Bestemming" from the first time I heard it. Sharon has an incredible talent to connect to the basic elements of the human spirit through her music."
Master Cellist, Amit Peled, who performed the piece throughout the tour, added: "The "Bestemming" Cello Concerto is truly a jewel in our repertoire! A deep musical journey that conveys an emotional and heroic story and takes the musicians and audience alike back in time to experience and admire the human spirit of the hero's of the Second World War."
A European tour is currently being planned under Maestro Barak Tal for 2019.
Sharon's latest commission, from the National Children Chorus, "Children of Light" premiered at Lincoln Center, NY December 2017 and at Royce Hall in Los Angels, January 2018 and she will be traveling to Virginia for a concert of her music May 2018.
On the concert stage, her music has been played all over the world. The Third Mother/Mothers' Lament is an a cappella piece that was debuted by the LA Master Chorale and was my first introduction to her and her music. She and her husband, David, and their daughter, Eden, live in the Valley about 2 blocks from where Cris (our pianist) lives. Check out her website at www.sharonfarber.com .
We are also very fortunate to have with us the cantor from the Temple of the Arts, Ilysia Pierce. After pursuing a career in the theatre since childhood, Ilysia says it was "beshert," meant to be, when Rabbi David Baron heard her sing. It was after that meeting that Ilysia redirected her life and began her journey as the Cantor of Temple of the Arts in Beverly Hills (where I met her). She has studied with Tova Marcos, who trains leading cantors in Los Angeles, and she has led Shabbat and High Holy Day services since 1999. In 2003 Rabbi David Baron and the Temple produced a CD, Enlighten, which has elicited outstanding audience and critical review. Ilysia's stirring rendition of "We Came to Sing in Jerusalem" was chosen to be on the Keeping the Faith, Voices for Israel 2 CD benefiting survivors of terrorism in Israel (www.voicesforisrael.org/faith/). Her vocal talents were also featured in the title song, "Keeping the Faith." Ilysia's emotional and powerful version of "Lift My Eyes" by Sam Glaser was chosen for his 25th Anniversary Tribute CD, Stages. Prior to her tenure at the Temple, Ilysia enjoyed a successful career entertaining audiences on stage, television, nightclubs and in concert. Some of her theatrical highlights include: Disney's King David, an oratorio concert sparking the reopening of the New Amsterdam Theatre in New York (the original home of Ziegfeld Follies), Disney's Beauty and the Beast, playing the Narrator in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Hodel in Fiddler on the Roof, Frumah-Sara in Fiddler on the Roof with Theodore Bikel and Lainie Kazan, Eva Peron in Evita, for which she received a Dramalogue Critics' Choice award for outstanding performance, and Johanna in Sweeney Todd. Ilysia continues to share her vocal talents outside the Temple of the Arts. Her reputation as a consummate performer has prompted invitations to sing in concerts as the featured guest artist at local venues such as the Walt Disney Concert Hall, the Ford Amphitheatre, the Saban Theatre, various fundraising events, including the Jewish Federation, and at Pan Pacific Park's Holocaust Memorial Yom HaShoah. Of all her successes and accomplishments, Ilysia says she is most thankful for her supportive family and friends. She feels blessed to have the most loyal and loving husband, David, and two beautiful children, Braxton and Madison.

Support missions through recycling!
Bring your plastic bottles, aluminum cans AND CRV glass bottles to church every Sunday. By recycling we can support Corazon, Crop Walk, Habitat for Humanity and some of the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) programs: Syrian refugee relief, eradicating hunger, clean water, ending malaria and fighting HIV/AIDS. Please bring your cans and bottles.
We have many spots to fill for liturgists on Sunday mornings. The following link will take you the sign up. Please check it out.
