Have you seen the news headlines recently?
  • a person pulled a knife on a pastor and church member and chased them through the parking lot in Miami
  • a 70 year old woman in Nashville was injured by a person in the church parking lot who stole her purse
  • a young girl dropping off shoes at her church was attacked in Miami
These are just a few of the incidents which have happened at churches recently. While we can never make church a 100% safe location, we can - and should - do what we can to improve the safety and security of our members and guests.
  • In addition to being a church coach/consultant (safety planning, staffing, structure, growth, reaching new people, discipleship, and more) and Southeastern University Adjunct Professor, I was recently asked to form and lead the Safety Team at the church we attend. We started the Sunday after Easter and here are a few of the things we have done so far:
  • conducted background checks on all prospective Safety Team members
  • purchased a fourth radio so now four members of the team can carry them at the same time
  • provided pepper gel to team members
  • placed flashlights in all offices and team members carry them as well
  • scheduled a CPR/First Aid training for team members and others
  • participated in our first Aikido class to provide team members with additional options for self-defense
  • written basic guidelines for Safety Team members
  • placed evacuation Go Bags in all children's classrooms
What has your church done this year to make your members and guests safer? I would love to hear what you are doing?
Could your church use some assistance in the expansive and complex areas of safety and security? I would be happy to be a resource.
I look forward to hearing from you today. Together we can better protect and provide ministry to our communities.
God’s peace,
Don
