Alumni Spotlight: Karl Koeppel ’07
Young Alumni Liaison
Elmira College’s Alumni Association helps establish and perpetuate fellowship between alumni and connection with the College and its students. In July, Karl Koeppel ’07 was named the Young Alumni Liaison for the Alumni Association Engagement Committee. A psychology and human services dual major, Karl received his Student Development in Higher Education Master's Degree from the University of Maine in 2009. Karl is the Associate Director of Student Life at Baruch College, part of the CUNY system. Here is a closer look at Karl.
Throughout this process, I have been fortunate to have been published in a higher education publication promoting the benefits of getting involved, been recognized and awarded by professional organizations and the individual campuses that I have worked at for excellence in the field continued my professional growth through continued participation in various professional organizations. This has continued to challenge me to be the best that I can be and learn.
How did your experience at Elmira College prepare you for this professional life? Specifically, were there experiences, courses, or faculty that made a significant influence on your education?
The way that administrators that I interacted with both trusted me, challenged me and allowed me to grow as a person prepared me for where I am today. I had the opportunity to be involved in many different activities including Student Association, Orientation, Residence Life, Student Alumni Council, Relay for Life, and A1 and the Sauce. I also had the opportunity to participate in two Term III trips traveling to the United Kingdom and Russia, experiences that I would not trade for the world. I also interacted with incredible faculty that challenged me to learn but also supported me.
In terms of faculty and staff that had an impact the list goes on and on but a few that come to mind, David Williams ’02, Julie Baumann ’75, Alison Wolfe, Diane Maluso, Peggy Arnesen ’63, Ben Curtis ’99, Brett Moore ’00, Mary Swasta, Ellen Burke ’00, and so many more.
Alumni Board members lead the way as ambassadors of the College. What motivated you to serve EC on the Board?
Elmira College has always meant a lot to me and without my experience, I would not be the best that I am today and probably would not be doing what I am doing today. It’s the least that I can do to give back. I also was fortunate that when I was a student I was able to interact with Alumni Board Members that showed me what being an active alumnus meant and made me proud to be a part of the EC Alumni Family. Some that come to mind include, Susan Allen Thomas, Teakie Welty, Joan Flint, Jay Wolkoff, Kim Curtis, Laurie Kelechava, Lynn Winner, Helen Murdock, Ann Wright Davis, Jim Joerger, Rushe Hudzinski, Marlena Seguin and so many more! (Sorry to anyone who I missed!, you all mean so much to me!)
What advice would you give a prospective student?
I would tell them to approach every experience with an open mind. You never know where you are going to land or who might step up with an idea or an opportunity. The time in college is your time to explore your interests, find your passions and stumble. If you stumble that is normal, get up and try again. It's not how many times you stumble but what you learn in picking yourself up again. Elmira has an excellent framework and community to have that happen if you give it a chance.

What have been the highlights and milestone of your career and life?
Through my experiences at Elmira College and getting involved in Co-Curricular activities, I found a home and found friends and people that saw something in me and accepted me. That laid the groundwork for me to think about entering higher education as an administrator. The underlying motivation has always been being able to see if I could be a part of another person’s journey. Some of the highlights that I have had, including being able to work across the county be it Florida, Maine, Long Island and now NYC. I have been fortunate to have had experiences in student involvement, orientation, residence life, judicial affairs, multicultural programming, community service and advocacy, first year and transition programming and college spirit programs. While I have seen and been involved in many challenges and many programs, each one has given me the chance to broaden my horizons and learn from the students, staff, and members of the community that each of these programs has impacted.Throughout this process, I have been fortunate to have been published in a higher education publication promoting the benefits of getting involved, been recognized and awarded by professional organizations and the individual campuses that I have worked at for excellence in the field continued my professional growth through continued participation in various professional organizations. Student Spotlight: Kristin Chivers ’19
Category: Academics
This week's #SoaringToSuccess story spotlights Kristin Chivers ’19. Kristin is a business administration major, with a Spanish minor. Her story highlights her recent experience as facility operations intern with the professional hockey organization, the Chicago Blackhawks.
Let’s hear about this experience from Kristin herself...
Experience is everything when it comes to the sports and entertainment industry. The experience begins the moment a customer walks through the front door and ends when they exit, including every detail in between. After completing Professor Wolfe’s “Sports, Entertainment, and Media Marketing” course, I knew THAT was the industry that I wanted to be in. I was granted an opportunity for a summer internship at the MB Ice Arena: Chicago Blackhawks Community Rink, the official practice and training facility of the Chicago Blackhawks hockey team. The facility opened in November 2017, so I was eager to learn about the overall operation of a brand-new facility tied so close with a professional sports team. This internship was an enriching experience where I received training in all areas of facility operation, and there was no better place to be than the MB Ice Arena.
I truly feel I have grasped new concepts over the course of my internship. First, I learned the importance of quality customer service and the effect it can have on the overall visit. Face-to-face interaction with customers and clients is a skill that I have developed, and each interaction helped build a solid relationship and business partnership with the facility. I gained this experience by acting as a customer service associate, executing point-of-sale transactions, and becoming an expert on the computer software system. Second, I explored areas of my concentration (marketing) such as Hootsuite, a program that manages social media posts and allows for better organization of social media communications. I also was exposed to email marketing by writing a weekly newsletter about upcoming events and programs that would be sent to a database of arena customers. Another project I was involved in created a database of hotels and restaurants with contact information to act as a recommendation platform for visiting clients and teams. Third, I explored new areas of interest like event planning B2B style by communicating with businesses and corporations to create, organize, and execute a personalized event.
The most important aspect of my internship experience is that I was connected to the sport that I love, hockey. I had the opportunity to teach aspiring young hockey players skills that I cherish being taught as a little girl in the Chicago area. It was exciting to be surrounded by the sport as well as being involved with the new Chicago Pro Hockey League that brought professional hockey to Chicago hockey fans over the summer. Being trained to sharpen skates and the basic operation of the Zamboni separate the learning experience of this internship from others. Above all, it was a treasure to work in an environment with such passionate and committed individuals of the MB Ice Arena and Chicago Blackhawks that shape a culture of success every day. I look forward to applying skills from this internship experience in my final year at Elmira and in my future career upon graduating!.
