From Pastor Molly: Bottom Lines
As you read this, I'll be away again for a few days, this time to my home state of Nebraska. Since my grandpa Don's death three years ago, I've tried to be more involved in supporting the future of our extended family's organic farm and the non-profit foundation connected to it. This weekend, we'll be hosting our 25th Annual Farm Tour, in an effort to share the lessons they've learned and encourage others to support or try this kind of farming.
My grandpa made a commitment to farming without chemicals back in 1953, and in the 1970's, after my Uncle David finished graduate school, they began the work of making a successful organic farm that pioneered an alternative way of farming. That they've survived this long has required their commitment to a different set of bottom-line values: prioritizing the health of the soil over any year's yield. Making sacrifices in the short-term for long-term health. Choosing labor-intensive methods rather than quick fixes.
It's also come with a whole set of added benefits: the farm is beautiful, and safe to walk around. It has more birdsong that most farms in the area, and healthy beehives.
Inspired by their work, I've endeavored in my own non-farming life to pursue different bottom-line values, too: to try to lift others up and not just myself, to keep perspective that I'm but one part of a much bigger world, to work for beautiful things even when they seem implausible. I see in this work a range of added benefits: my work has the sense of purpose that comes from being a part of a something bigger. I have been blessed by meaningful relationships with a diversity of people.
While I'm in Nebraska this week, I also get to be a part of the screening of a new film that focuses on the farming work of my uncle and grandpa, called "Dreaming of a Vetter World." A friend, Bonnie Hawthorne, made this film over the past four years, independently. I'm very excited to watch in Lincoln this Sunday, it in a theater full of people connected to its stories.
I'll miss being with you on Sunday, but please know you'll be in my thoughts and prayers. (And while I'll miss this week's summer movie sermon, I'll be enjoying a different film, too.) I'm so very grateful to Rev. Darin Arntson, who will be preaching on Sunday, drawing lessons from "The Greatest Showman," a film that dramatizes the life of PT Barnum. I trust you will both welcome her and be blessed by her preaching and leading.
with gratitude,
Pastor Molly
Please help me welcome our guest preacher this Sunday, Rev. Darin Arntson. Darin has been with us twice in the past year--preaching last summer, and presiding at the communion table earlier this year. She has just started a new job this month, as the Associate Director of Leadership for our California-Pacific Annual Conference. I'm pleased to count her as a long-time friend and colleague, too!
Sunday, July 15:
"Messages from the Movies: The Greatest Showman"
Rev. Darin Arntson, preaching
Ephesians 1:3-14
Ephesians 1:3 Praised be Adonai, Father of our Lord Yeshua the Messiah, who in the Messiah has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in heaven. 4 In the Messiah he chose us in love before the creation of the universe to be holy and without defect in his presence. 5 He determined in advance that through Yeshua the Messiah we would be his sons — in keeping with his pleasure and purpose — 6 so that we would bring him praise commensurate with the glory of the grace he gave us through the Beloved One.
7 In union with him, through the shedding of his blood, we are set free — our sins are forgiven; this accords with the wealth of the grace 8 he has lavished on us. In all his wisdom and insight 9 he has made known to us his secret plan, which by his own will he designed beforehand in connection with the Messiah 10 and will put into effect when the time is ripe — his plan to place everything in heaven and on earth under the Messiah’s headship.
11 Also in union with him we were given an inheritance, we who were picked in advance according to the purpose of the One who effects everything in keeping with the decision of his will, 12 so that we who earlier had put our hope in the Messiah would bring him praise commensurate with his glory.13 Furthermore, you who heard the message of the truth, the Good News offering you deliverance, and put your trust in the Messiah were sealed by him with the promised Ruach HaKodesh, 14 who guarantees our inheritance until we come into possession of it and thus bring him praise commensurate with his glory. (Complete Jewish Bible).
Ephesians 1:3-14
Verse 3
[3] Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ:
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us — God's blessing us is his bestowing all spiritual and heavenly blessings upon us. Our blessing God is the paying him our solemn and grateful acknowledgments, both on account of his own essential blessedness, and of the blessings which he bestows upon us. He is the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, as man and Mediator: he is his Father, primarily, with respect to his divine nature, as his only begotten Son; and, secondarily, with respect to his human nature, as that is personally united to the divine.
With all spiritual blessings in heavenly things — With all manner of spiritual blessings, which are heavenly in their nature, original, and tendency, and shall be completed in heaven: far different from the external privileges of the Jews, and the earthly blessings they expected from the Messiah.
Verse 4
[4] According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love:
As he hath chosen us — Both Jews and gentiles, whom he foreknew as believing in Christ, 1 Peter 1:2.
Verse 5
[5] Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will,
Having predestinated us to the adoption of sons — Having foreordained that all who afterwards believed should enjoy the dignity of being sons of God, and joint-heirs with Christ.
According to the good pleasure of his will — According to his free, fixed, unalterable purpose to confer this blessing on all those who should believe in Christ, and those only.
Verse 6
[6] To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved.
To the praise of the glory of his grace — His glorious, free love without any desert on our part.
Verse 7
[7] In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;
By whom we — Who believe.
Have — From the moment we believe.
Redemption — From the guilt and power of sin.
Through his blood — Through what he hath done and suffered for us.
According to the riches of his grace — According to the abundant overflowings of his free mercy and favour.
Verse 8
[8] Wherein he hath abounded toward us in all wisdom and prudence;
In all wisdom — Manifested by God in the whole scheme of our salvation.
And prudence — Which be hath wrought in us, that we may know and do all his acceptable and perfect will.
Verse 9
[9] Having made known unto us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure which he hath purposed in himself:
Having made known to us — By his word and by his Spirit.
The mystery of his will — The gracious scheme of salvation by faith, which depends on his own sovereign will alone. This was but darkly discovered under the law; is now totally hid from unbelievers; and has heights and depths which surpass all the knowledge even of true believers.
Verse 10
[10] That in the dispensation of the fulness of times he might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven, and which are on earth; even in him:
That in the dispensation of the fullness of the times — In this last administration of God's fullest grace, which took place when the time appointed was fully come.
He might gather together into one in Christ — Might recapitulate, re-unite, and place in order again under Christ, their common Head.
All things which are in heaven, and on earth — All angels and men, whether living or dead, in the Lord.
Verse 11
[11] In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will:
Through whom we — Jews.
Also have obtained an inheritance — The glorious inheritance of the heavenly Canaan, to which, when believers, we were predestinated according to the purpose of him that worketh all things after the counsel of his own will - The unalterable decree, "He that believeth shall be delivered;" which will is not an arbitrary will, but flowing from the rectitude of his nature, else, what security would there be that it would be his will to keep his word even with the elect?
Verse 12
[12] That we should be to the praise of his glory, who first trusted in Christ.
That we — Jews.
Who first believed — Before the gentiles. So did some of them in every place. Here is another branch of the true gospel predestination: he that believes is not only elected to salvation, (if he endures to the end,) but is fore-appointed of God to walk in holiness, to the praise of his glory.
Verse 13
[13] In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,
In whom ye — Gentiles.
Likewise believed, after ye had heard the gospel — Which God made the means of your salvation; in whom after ye had believed - Probably some time after their first believing.
Ye were sealed by that Holy Spirit of promise — Holy both in his nature and in his operations, and promised to all the children of God. The sealing seems to imply, 1. A full impression of the image of God on their souls. 2. A full assurance of receiving all the promises, whether relating to time or eternity.
Verse 14
[14] Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.
Who, thus sealing us, is an earnest - Both a pledge and a foretaste of our inheritance.
Till the redemption of the purchased possession — Till the church, which he has purchased with his own blood, shall be fully delivered from all sin and sorrow, and advanced to everlasting glory.
To the praise of his glory — Of his glorious wisdom, power, and mercy.(John Wesley’s Explanatory Notes)

Special Music: "The Secret Place" and "This is Me (from The Greatest Showman)" sung by Daryl Thomas.
"This is Me" by Justin Paul / Benj Pasek
I am not a stranger to the dark
Hide away, they say
'Cause we don't want your broken parts
I've learned to be ashamed of all my scars
Run away, they say
No one'll love you as you are
But I won't let them break me down to dust
I know that there's a place for us
For we are glorious
When the sharpest words wanna cut me down
I'm gonna send a flood, gonna drown them out
I am brave, I am bruised
I am who I'm meant to be, this is me
Look out 'cause here I come
And I'm marching on to the beat I drum
I'm not scared to be seen
I make no apologies, this is me
Oh-oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh, oh
Another round of bullets hits my skin
Well, fire away 'cause today, I won't let the shame sink in
We are bursting through the barricades and
Reaching for the sun (we are warriors)
Yeah, that's what we've become (yeah, that's what we've become)
I won't let them break me down to dust
I know that there's a place for us
For we are glorious
When the sharpest words wanna cut me down
I'm gonna send a flood, gonna drown them out
I am brave, I am bruised
I am who I'm meant to be, this is me
Look out 'cause here I come
And I'm marching on to the beat I drum
I'm not scared to be seen
I make no apologies, this is me
Oh-oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh, oh
This is me
and I know that I deserve your love
(Oh-oh-oh-oh) 'cause there's nothing I'm not worthy of
(Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh, oh)
When the sharpest words wanna cut me down
I'm gonna send a flood, gonna drown them out
This is brave, this is proof
This is who I'm meant to be, this is me
Look out 'cause here I come (look out 'cause here I come)
And I'm marching on to the beat I drum (marching on, marching, marching on)
I'm not scared to be seen
I make no apologies, this is me
When the sharpest words wanna cut me down
I'm gonna send a flood, gonna drown them out
I'm gonna send a flood
Gonna drown them out
Oh
This is me
"The Secret Place" by Phil Wickham
Where will you run, my soul
Where will you go when wells run dry
When the wind starts to blow
How you gonna keep this flame alive
In the fading light when night is breaking
I know You will always be waiting
You'll always be there
I'm running to the secret place
Where You are, where You are
I sing to You of all the ways
You stole my heart, stole my heart
Better is a moment that I spend with You
Than a million other days away
I'm running, I'm running
I'm running to the secret place
You are my only hope
You are the Rock on which I stand
You will not let me go
I know that I am safe inside Your hands
In the fading light when night is breaking
I know You will always be waiting
You'll always be there
I'm running to the secret place
Where You are, where You are
I sing to You of all the ways
You stole my heart, stole my heart
Better is a moment that I spend with You
Than a million other days away
I'm running, I'm running
I'm running to the secret place
Hands are lifted high, hearts awake to life
We are satisfied here with You, here with You
Chains will hit the floor, broken lives restored
We couldn't ask for more here with You, here with You
I'm running to the secret place
Where You are, where You are
I sing to You of all the ways
You stole my heart, stole my heart
Better is a moment that I spend with You
Than a million other days away
I'm running, I'm running
I'm running to the secret place

Have you ever been forced to miss church? I have, while serving with the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II. For over a year of my duty I was at an outpost in Southwest Greenland and during that period there was no worship, excepting what I did privately. As far as I knew I was the only church person in the group of nineteen men and one officer and church was the furthest thing from most of them during our year (plus) of duty there. However, about two miles from our Loran (Electronic Navigation) outpost there was a small poor Eskimo village which had a chapel for the 95 members of the town. It was, of course Lutheran, due to Greenland being Danish controlled, and during the war under the protectorate of the USA. Bob Peterson's popular column for the Mainsail has found new life, online! Read his view from the pews about church life and community news. You'll enjoy keeping up with the many good things happening in our congregation! by Bob PetersonHave you ever been forced to miss church? So when the officer was invited to attend Easter Sunday's worship service (1945) he asked me to go with him. During that time he censored all outgoing mail and knew from my writing to my wife, Ada Belle and child, Jean that we were Methodists. I of course said yes, put on my best uniform and walked the two miles to the village of Fredericksdahl. The chapel was full that sunny morning and the entire service was in the Greenland language (Eskimo). So while not a word was understood by me or my commanding officer, we did grasp the meaning of the Easter message given by what I believe was the town's Elder. However, their songs were hymns and one or two was familiar to me and the entire group sang, loudly and all in unison with no piano or organ. There was also no communion and absolute silence between events....no whispers, etc. I will never forget that Easter Sunday Worship and thanked the Lord for the opportunity to be a part of the celebration of our risen Lord's miracle. Even the close-by ocean was silent that day due to a couple of miles of slush ice keeping the waves off the sheltered beach.
Sometimes when you cannot have something that you take for granted, you miss it very much.
Therefore I believe that this loving congregation is even more dear to me than would have been otherwise due to the fact that I missed church for that time.
Last Sunday's printed order of worship featured a photo of the ruins pf Coventry Church in England, about which Pastor Molly talked as part of her sermon. I knew where it was, having visited it in the 1960s while touring the British Isles. The rainbow in the background said it all, life goes on even through such terrible war times. I thank Pastor Molly and her staff for producing such meaningful pictures in our bulletin, all of which seem to pertain to the sermon subject. My personal feeling is that a brief explanation of the art on the cover should be identified or explained each week. Thanks to Ernie and the staff for doing such a great job on our printed bulletin each week.
Thanks to a week or two of very hot weather you may now know what I have known for many years at our church. The front rows of our sanctuary are quite a bit lower than the back of the room and therefore a bit cooler on hot days. Other benefits from sitting in front are in case of an earthquake, the entrance to the left (South) side is a double door, no stairs exit to Torrance Blvd., no one blocks my view of the children's message and their delightful responses to Pastor Molly's or Risa's messages. The problem with sitting in front is that you are usually the last people out of the church and so miss some of the camraderie of friends and fellow worshipers. Oh, yes, the church seat cushions are less used and therefore softer than those in the rear. I will tell no other secrets today.

Options for Children at Church in Summer!
We love having children in worship, and through the summer, we encourage families to attend together!
For much of the summer, our children's Sunday School is on break, but two special things are happening:
-We have special children's activity books available to pick up as kids enter the sanctuary, with things they can work on during worship.
-Some weeks, we also have special Summer FunDay School activities planned: the kids will be invited to meet up at the Passing of the Peace to leave the sanctuary and go for a lesson during part of worship--they'll return for Communion.
Our next Fun-Day School will be July 22nd!
Pray for our Baja 2018 Team!
Our team left last Saturday afternoon for Chula Vista UMC, and then headed to Mexico bright and early Sunday at 8AM!
This week, they've will spent time serving with Inalienable, working with migrant farmworkers near Vicente Guerrero in Baja California, Mexico.
Pray for the team, but also pray for the people we're going to serve. Service isn't about the server, after all!
Our Trustees and Church Council invite you to consider a special gift to a summer capital campaign, aimed at funding three critical upgrades on campus: new exterior stairs on our education building, new flooring in Epworth Lounge, and upgraded LED lights in Fellowship Hall and through the campus. We have received $30,140 in pledges and gifts from 32 different families (toward our $50,000 goal)! It is not too late to make a gift--click through for more information or to make a donation!
