IMPERFECT BACKGROUND CHECKS
A pastor contacted me last week seeking advice on a situation which came up in the church he leads. A couple of people volunteered to serve in Student Ministry, their background checks were not clean, the church allowed them to serve anyway, and now a parent found out and was upset. The church interviewed both volunteers and spoke to people who knew them. The decision was made to let them volunteer with youth but now there was some blow-back.
The church was seeking some guidance on how to handle people with criminal convictions on their record. They wanted a policy that both protected people and recognized the change God's grace can bring into people's lives. In response I drafted some guidelines which could be used in evaluating each case and provided an example for each guideline.
What is the written policy at your church which is followed if someone's background check is not completely clean? If you have one and would not mind sharing it, I would greatly appreciate you sending it to me. If you do not have a policy then I am happy to assist you in creating one.
Ministry is filled with judgement calls and having guidelines to consider can help us make these difficult decisions. (They can also be helpful if you should end up in court).
WHAT'S IN YOUR FIRST AID KIT?
A woman was stung two Sundays ago by some creature in the parking lot of the church we attend. Her body reacted quickly and the wound turned red and swollen. She was experiencing a fair amount of pain and had the stinger which she had pulled from her arm. I quickly assessed her situation and grabbed a first aid kit.
If this happened in your church, would you have anything in your first aid kit which would help her? Do you have something which is designed to be placed on stings and bug bites? What if she had skinned her knee, does your kit have a bandage large enough to cover an adult knee? What if she burned her hand on a coffee maker, does your kit have burn cream? Do you have gloves to keep your staff/volunteers safe when working with blood or other bodily fluids?
The contents of our first aid kits usually are far from our mind . . . until we need them! It is better to review your kits now and make sure they are well-stocked than to need something later and not have it.
IN SEARCH OF BETTER RESULTS
Could your church perform at a higher level? Would you like to see more people in worship? Do you wish the church could make a larger impact in the community? Are the trends in attendance and finances of concern?
Just about every church leader can answer "yes" to most or all of these questions. We know the challenges and we see the culture changing. The real thing to ponder is "what are we going to do differently in order to get a different outcome?"
Just as great athletes and business leaders benefit from having a coach, the same is true for church leaders. Your coach works for you and helps you to reach your goals. The focus is on increasing performance in your setting. We start where you are and work to identify key steps which can help you lead even more successfully.
Contact me today and let's talk about your situation. There is no obligation and you may find it is just the thing for you.
