Guatemala & Costa Rica
Nearly 900 participate in Encuentro 2018
Nearly 900 volunteers from the U.S. and Canada are traveling to Guatemala and Costa Rica throughout June and July for Encuentro Missions 2018.
Encuentro is a bi-annual event that offers opportunities for youth and families to serve in missions. During the last 50 years, Encuentro has led trips with the U.S., Canada, Mexico, the Bahamas, and Peru. More than 250,000 students have participated, and as a result more than two million children and adults have heard the gospel.
This is the first time Encuentro will be in Guatemala and Costa Rica. The trip is broken up into two separate sessions, from 30 June to 7 July and from 7 to 14 July, with a total of 500 volunteers serving in Costa Rica and 350 serving in Guatemala.
Local churches are working with the teams in both countries to offer Vacation Bible Schools, sports camps, and other fun activities to the communities. They also have planned construction projects, church planting initiatives, and even medical service projects.
The Guatemala team will serve at the Center for Christian Conventions in Guatemala City, while the Costa Rica teams will work in and around the city of San José with their home base at the Nazarene Seminary of the Americas (SENDAS).
“We have united under the same goal, prayer, preparation, and execution of projects," said Gabriela Bustos, the Encuentro event coordinator. "The only goal is to be the hands and feet of Christ; to reach the hearts of those who need his love. We feel very blessed to have this beautiful event in our country so that the name of our Lord Jesus Christ may be magnified." (Church of the Nazarene Mesoamerica)

South American NTS celebrates 30th anniversary
South American Nazarene Theological Seminary recently celebrated its 30th anniversary, and the festivities will last all year.
In honor of the occasion, the seminary will continually celebrate over the remainder of the year with a series of commemorative events throughout the Church of the Nazarene's South America Region, culminating with this year's graduation ceremony on 1 December.
The celebration started with a three-day tour 22-24 June where church members visited three different cities in Ecuador: Guayaquil, Riobamba, and Quito.
More than a thousand pastors, leaders, young adults, and laity participated in the festivities that featured worship music, dramas, and even choreographed performances.
Seminary President David Lemache and North Andean Field Strategy Coordinator David Gonzalez led the tour.
Lucas Leys, a noted speaker and author in the region, was the keynote speaker for the events. Leys emphasized the importance of generational leadership, the urgency for church revival, and the need for biblically trained leaders in South America.
As the seminary looks to the future, they continue to seek new and innovative ways to reach the next generation of potential students. (Church of the Nazarene South America)

South Uruguay District encourages, equips 'those who care for others'
“Taking Care of Those Who Care for Others, a pastoral care conference on the South Uruguay District, encouraged participants to pursue holistic personal health and seek balance in their work and family lives.
Throughout the conference, held 8-9 June in Montevideo, pastors were encouraged to pursue holistic personal health and to seek balance in their work and family lives — both essential for leading a healthy church.
Geraldo Nunes, holistic ministries coordinator for Brazil, Jose Luis Becerra, South America Regional leader for the "Living Out the Great Commission Initiative," and Carlos Soto, Colombian church pastor, served as event speakers.
Rocio Fonseca, national coordinator for women’s ministries in Uruguay, also led the woman in a series of women's ministries workshops, encouraging them to continue the work they are doing in their local church.
"We thank the district superintendent, Rev. Adhemar Charlín, and his wife, Pastor Ligdana Carrero, for their valuable help in making this time a success," said Eduardo Meza, national ministries coordinator in Uruguay. "[We] also thank the regional leaders for their constant help in the development and progress of the church in Uruguay." (Church of the Nazarene South America)

The flag of Togo features a white "Star of Hope" on a field of red, representing the blood shed by countrymen during the internal struggle for independence. Green is symbolic of the country's agricultural wealth, while yellow is symbolic of mineral wealth. The five horizontal stripes represent the five regions of Togo.
Flags of the Nations: Togo
Since September 1, 2009, the Church of the Nazarene's Global Ministry Center (GMC) proudly flies a flag each week of one of the many nations in which the denomination is present in ministry. Leaders were invited to send a national flag to be flown at the GMC alongside the flag of the United States*. The national flags rotate weekly, and photos of them raised are sent to the church leaders of that country.
This week: Togo
The Church of the Nazarene officially entered Togo in 1998.
Togo had a population of 7,965,055 in 2017. That same year, Togo reported 168 Churches of the Nazarene, 66 of which had been officially organized. Togo has 7,583 total members.
Located on the Africa Region, Togo has two Pioneer Areas. For more information about the Africa Region, visit africanazarene.org.
* = The weekly highlighted flag is raised on the middle of three poles in compliance with U.S. government protocols. It flies to the left of the GMC host-nation United States flag, which flies above the host-state flag of Kansas. The Christian flag flies on the third pole.

Children attend missionary camp in Mexico
Gulf of Mexico District Nazarene Missions International carried out four COMI's (Children's Missionary Orientation Camps) throughout the months of May and June for children between 4 and 14 years old. The camps were titled "Missionary Adventure," and taught children about the Church of the Nazarene's mission work around the world and helped the children discover a call to missions.
More than 100 children attended. They acted out scenarios in which they "traveled" to South Africa, Japan, the Middle East, and the Dominican Republic, learning about each area along the way.
NMI leaders — specifically those who work with children — received training on how to instruct and involve children in missions by using various teaching materials and other tools.
This event would not have been possible without the help of the local churches and the district NMI president, Elizabeth Roa, along with Judith Galindo and Rebeca Ramírez, members of the NMI council, who were in charge of preparing the camps. (Church of the Nazarene Mesoamerica)

Volunteers focus on security, holistic training at Panama City event
A children's ministry training seminar was held in Panama City, Panama, for Child Development Center country coordinators and staff 27-28 June.
The event trained participants in security policies set in place for children and provided workers with additional tools and techniques to encourage a more holistic approach to child development. Special emphasis was put on practical improvements and possible solutions regarding the quality of services offered to children throughout the Mesoamerica Region's children's ministries.
Dhariana Balbuena, Nazarene Compassionate Ministries regional coordinator, and Dan Brewster, World Vision children's work trainer, organized and led the event.
The Church of the Nazarene's Mesoamerica Region hopes events and training like this will encourage more robust children's ministry programs throughout Panama. (Church of the Nazarene Mesoamerica)

Children's orchestra performs in Ecuador
The official launch of the Chamber Orchestra of the Church of the Nazarene was held in the city of Guaranda, Ecuador, 23 June.
The event featured Andean rhythms, culturally popular songs, and worship songs performed by nearly 150 children and youth, all of which are from the 10 churches that the region planted within the last 5 years.
More than 2,000 people attended the outdoor event to listen to the orchestra. Despite the children's lack of resources, audience members were reportedly amazed at the skill the children exhibited.
"[The children's abilities] demonstrated that there are no boundaries nor limits for personal growth and overcoming obstacles," said Latacunga, Ecuador Church of the Nazarene pastor and event M.C. Viviana Perez.
Pastor and international communicator Donizetti Barrios shared a message with the audience. Secular music singer Victor Sao, who received Christ about one year ago at the Cuenca, Ecuador, Church of the Nazarene, accompanied him.
The event featured child musicians from the regions of Bolivar, Riobamba, and Santa Clara, and shared the work that the church is doing in the Serra Centro District with local children and families. (Church of the Nazarene South America)

Worship service at Shelter Community Church of the Nazarene
Ohio church member finds freedom through education
Terri Harrell's life changed 18 years ago when she accepted Christ as her Savior. Since that time she has never felt fully prepared to answer some of the difficult questions she receives. Until now.
Harrell has been involved in the prayer ministry at Shelter Community Church of the Nazarene in Dayton, Ohio, since she made that life transformation, but recently gained additional understanding of what it means to be a follower of Christ.
“I knew what I believed, but I couldn’t give information to back up what I thought to be true,” Harrell said. “I’ve always felt that I need a more solid base for my own beliefs. I mean, I truly knew that God was healing these folks [in my church’s prayer ministry], but I wished I had more knowledge to answer people’s questions about God, Jesus, and this whole ‘religion’ thing.”
Harrell found what she was looking for through the Church of the Nazarene's The Discipleship Place resource.
“When I started taking the online classes about a year ago, I wasn’t sure what I was looking to get from them,” Harrell said. “Honestly, it was to make me feel like I had a right to be in ministry not based on what I felt but what I knew. That is silly, which I know now because what I gained is way more than simple knowledge. I gained the confidence to speak boldly for God’s kingdom and His earnest love for us.”
So far, Harrell has been through the courses Communicating the Gospel, History and Polity, John Wesley’s Theology, and New Testament Study, and she has only one session left in the Old Testament Study course. After she finishes the Old Testament course, she plans on taking the Spiritual Formation course next.
Of these courses, Harrell says John Wesley’s Theology was her favorite. She says it felt as if God was speaking to her while she was reading about John Wesley and his pursuit of truth, gaining insight into what her pastor meant while he was teaching from the pulpit.
“[John Wesley] didn't just continue blindly following his father’s beliefs,” Harrel says. “He studied, questioned, and even adjusted his positions. I am that kind of person too, but I never thought I had permission to do that — to wonder, to question. Going through The Discipleship Place classes have fed that desire for knowledge.”
Not only is she using what she is learning to strengthen her own beliefs, but now more than ever Harrell says she feels truly free to serve.
“I’ve been a Nazarene since 1999, but before that I was lost,” Harrell said. “[I was] suicidal, abusing drugs and alcohol, sleeping with strange men. Then a co-worker invited me to church, and I got saved that night! My family was just as shocked as I was, and within two years I was teaching classes and sharing my healing journey. It wasn’t instant but Jesus was leading me, coaxing me every day.”
And now, 18 years later, God is still walking with her as she grows in experience and wisdom in her faith.
“Now I know I am Wesleyan, and I know I am following the Nazarene,” Harrell said. “I cannot express how freeing that is. I’m free to minister to others, I’m free to believe I am loved by Him, and this makes me free to love His children wherever or whoever they are.”
