Daily Scripture:
Joshua 1:9 Haven’t I ordered you, ‘Be strong, be bold’? So don’t be afraid or downhearted, because Adonai your God is with you wherever you go.”
10 Y’hoshua instructed the officials of the people 11 to go through the camp and order the people, “Prepare provisions, because in three days you will cross this Yarden to go in and take possession of the land Adonai your God is giving you.” (Complete Jewish Bible).
1 Corinthians 12:4 Now there are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit gives them. 5 Also there are different ways of serving, but it is the same Lord being served. 6 And there are different modes of working, but it is the same God working them all in everyone. 7 Moreover, to each person is given the particular manifestation of the Spirit that will be for the common good. (Complete Jewish Bible).
Prayer Tip:
In 1 Timothy 6:6, Paul writes, “Godliness with contentment is great gain,” and in his letter to the Romans (12:3), he says, “Do not think of yourself more highly [but also maybe more lowly?] than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment….”
I think often we are so busy trying to live up to the standards of the modern world, we strive to have/do/be more than we realistically can. Then we are disappointed in ourselves when we fall short of an impossible standard.
Instead of dwelling on who the world says we should be, maybe our time would be better spent earnestly asking God to show us who we were created to be, to look at who we actually are and not who we think we need to be. This isn’t to say that we shouldn’t stretch and grow and improve ourselves, but that when we do, we should do it in a way that helps us live more fully as God intended.
Lord God, You knitted us together in our mothers’ wombs and you knew us before we were even born. You created each of us to be someone special. Sometimes we forget that, and it’s so easy to fall into a pattern of trying to be more like others. Help us to find contentment – and even joy! – in living into our true selves in you.
And, God, help us to love and accept others for who they are and who you made them to be. Help us to choose each day to open ourselves to you as you guide us through this life. In Jesus’ name, Amen. (Angela LaVallie Tinsley, Resurrection Facilities Services)
