"Scott Williams, a Vice President at EMD Serono [and a National Alliance for Caregiving Board Member], says men tend to be less likely to ask for help, meaning that they miss out on important resources. 'What we're seeing is that men are more and more taking on this role...they think they're doing this for their family or loved ones, but we're finding that they're seeking support less because they're not identifying themselves as a caregiver."

Parade | June 25, 2018
"As a caregiver, you not only have to give that emotional support but not get caught up in the jet wash of doom and gloom. It's really alsobecoming a good listener and not taking anything personally...there's going to be shame and blame and pointing fingers and so many other things. You kind of have to ride the wave and stay above the fray."

Randomized Trial of Family-Support Intervention in Intensive Care Units
In a study sponsored by the UPMC Health System and the Greenwall Foundation, researchers found that among critically ill patients and their surrogates, a family-support intervention delivered by an interprofessional ICU team does not significantly affect the surrogates' burden of psychological symptoms. However, the surrogates' ratings of the quality of communication and the patient- and family-centeredness of care were better and the length of stay in the ICU was shorter with the intervention than with usual care. The study was published in the New England Journal of Medicine and can be found HERE.
