Beth Immanuel Newsletter for Av 5774 - August 2014 - Shalom Beth Immanuel e-Community!

Beth Immanuel Newsletter for Av 5774 - August 2014 - Shalom Beth Immanuel e-Community!
Welcome to the month of Av.
The Nine Days
Last Monday, July 28, was Rosh Chodesh Av, the beginning of the month of Av and the beginning of the “nine days” culminating in the fast of Tisha be'Av (the 9th of Av): the anniversary of the destruction of the 1st and 2nd Temples in Jerusalem. Tisha be'Av is observed with a complete fast beginning before sunset on Monday evening August 4 and ending after sunset on Tuesday, July 5.
We observe partial mourning rites for the duration of the nine days. In view of the current upheaval in the land of Israel, the nine days are a good opportunity for us to pray for the peace of Jerusalem, asking God to send our righteous Messiah a second time.
Levertoff Yahrzeit
Rosh Chodesh Av is the Yahrzeit (anniversary of death) of Paul Philip Levertoff (1878–1954). Paul Levertoff was an influential Messianic Jewish leader whose writings and teachings have been instrumental in shaping the teaching at Beth Immanuel. Listen to a sermon based on Levertoff’s writings: The Four Kindnesses
Learn about the man and his work in a teaching titled The Levertoff Legacy.
Tisha be’Av Service
Beth Immanuel will conduct a Tisha be’Av service featuring a reading of the book of Lamentations on Monday August 4, 8:30 PM.
The Greatest of these is Love
Catch up on Beth Immanuel’s summer of love and peace with the new series of teachings titled “The Greatest of these is Love.” These messages unpack the heart of the Gospel and Yeshua’s mandate to love God and to love your fellow.
Summer Bible Study: Paul’s Epistle to the Romans
Pastor Lancaster's Summer Bible study on Romans is underway. Classes meet Monday nights at 7:00 PM in the Beth Immanuel Library/Green Room (use the Orange Street entrance). Audio CD’s are available. Contact us if you are interested in obtaining CDs.
Chronicles of the Messiah
Pastor Lancaster’s comprehensive study on the gospels and the life of Yeshua is now complete in an all-new hard bound edition with additional essays, indices, charts, maps, and appendices. Consider adding Chronicles of the Messiah to your home or congregational library.
Elul and the Season of Teshuvah
Rosh Chodesh Elul occurs on August 26-27, beginning the season of repentance and the forty day count-down to Yom Kippur.
Rosh Hashanah and the Trumpet of Messiah
The High Holidays of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are quickly approaching. At Beth Immanuel, the men’s choir is already rehearsing for the High Holiday liturgies. Make plans now to join us for our stellar Rosh Hashanah services, and stay for Shabbat Shuvah that Saturday. Consider it a mini-conference with teaching about Rosh Hashanah and the Second Coming of Yeshua from D. Thomas Lancaster, Aaron Eby, and other speakers (tba): Wednesday through Saturday, September 24-27. Click here for details.
Yom Kippur
Yom Kippur this year falls on the Sabbath. Our Kol Nidrei service begins at 6:00 PM, Friday, October 3. Services on Saturday October 4 begin at 9:00 AM.

Dutch Nazarenes affected by Malaysian plane crash from the Eurasia Snapshots of the Eurasia Region of the Global Church of the Nazarene for Wednesday, 30 July 2014

Dutch Nazarenes affected by Malaysian plane crash from the Eurasia Snapshots of the Eurasia Region of the Global Church of the Nazarene for Wednesday, 30 July 2014
Dutch Nazarenes affected by Malaysian Airlines plane crash
When the Malaysian Airlines flight MH17 was shot down by a missile over Ukraine on 17 July, more than 200 of the 293 passengers who died were from the Netherlands. Several of the victims were family members or friends and colleagues of Nazarenes in the Netherlands.
At the Amersfoort Church of the Nazarene, Rienk and Priscilla Hollander lost Priscilla’s brother and his wife, Rob van Keulen, Caroline van Keulen-van Doorn, and their two children, Alard, 16, and Jeroen, 15.
"All the attention and love extended to them which have arisen out of this terrible happening has filled them with thankfulness as they have received many signs of compassion extended to them from the Church,” said Jacob Overduin.
The family is tied up with numerous meetings for families of the victims, as well as going to the airport to await planes returning some bodies to Holland. There was also a televised public memorial service in the main church in Amersfoort with over 1,000 people attending. Then the Amersfoort Church of the Nazarene followed with a time of support, prayer and meditation.
Messages of sympathy can be sent to:
Fam. Rienk and Priscilla Hollander

or E-mail: rphollander@kpnplanet.nl
Some members of the Dordrecht Church of the Nazarene were also touched by the tragedy, when three attendees discovered that one of the assistant teachers at the school where they worked, along with her husband, Anton and Lianne Camfferman, were among the crash victims. The woman had worked at the school for 20 years. They left behind three daughters.
“We had a special meeting on last Sunday and we took a silence for the people who died, and also we read something from the paper about these two people who died,” said pastor Michel Meeuws.
The church and community are having a difficult time responding to the assistant teacher’s death, because the school is closed for the summer and most of the teachers are on holiday.
Meeuws suggested that Nazarenes who are praying for the situation pray first that violence would not escalate in Ukraine, as well as pray for peace and unity in Holland, and for God to comfort the families and friends of the victims.

Daily Readings for Friday, 1 August 2014
Jeremiah 26: Change the Way You’re Living
1 At the beginning of the reign of Jehoiakim son of Josiah king of Judah, this Message came from God to Jeremiah:
2-3 “God’s Message: Stand in the court of God’s Temple and preach to the people who come from all over Judah to worship in God’s Temple. Say everything I tell you to say to them. Don’t hold anything back. Just maybe they’ll listen and turn back from their bad lives. Then I’ll reconsider the disaster that I’m planning to bring on them because of their evil behavior.
4-6 “Say to them, ‘This is God’s Message: If you refuse to listen to me and live by my teaching that I’ve revealed so plainly to you, and if you continue to refuse to listen to my servants the prophets that I tirelessly keep on sending to you—but you’ve never listened! Why would you start now?—then I’ll make this Temple a pile of ruins like Shiloh, and I’ll make this city nothing but a bad joke worldwide.’”
7-9 Everybody there—priests, prophets, and people—heard Jeremiah preaching this Message in the Temple of God. When Jeremiah had finished his sermon, saying everything God had commanded him to say, the priests and prophets and people all grabbed him, yelling, “Death! You’re going to die for this! How dare you preach—and using God’s name!—saying that this Temple will become a heap of rubble like Shiloh and this city be wiped out without a soul left in it!”
All the people mobbed Jeremiah right in the Temple itself.
Psalm 69:5 God, you know every sin I’ve committed;
My life’s a wide-open book before you.
8 My brothers shun me like a bum off the street;
My family treats me like an unwanted guest.
9 I love you more than I can say.
Because I’m madly in love with you,
They blame me for everything they dislike about you.
10 When I poured myself out in prayer and fasting,
All it got me was more contempt.
14 But I will pray to you, LORD,
at a favorable time.
God, in your abundant kindness, answer me
with your sure deliverance.
Matthew 13:53-57 When Jesus finished telling these stories, he left there, returned to his hometown, and gave a lecture in the meetinghouse. He made a real hit, impressing everyone. “We had no idea he was this good!” they said. “How did he get so wise, get such ability?” But in the next breath they were cutting him down: “We’ve known him since he was a kid; he’s the carpenter’s son. We know his mother, Mary. We know his brothers James and Joseph, Simon and Judas. All his sisters live here. Who does he think he is?” They got their noses all out of joint.

58 But Jesus said, “A prophet is taken for granted in his hometown and his family.” He didn’t do many miracles there because of their hostile indifference.

Catholic MeditationsFrederick, Maryland, United States - Daily Mass Reading & Catholic Meditation “The Word among Us” for Friday, 1 August 2014
Meditations: Matthew 13:53-57 When Jesus finished telling these stories, he left there, returned to his hometown, and gave a lecture in the meetinghouse. He made a real hit, impressing everyone. “We had no idea he was this good!” they said. “How did he get so wise, get such ability?” But in the next breath they were cutting him down: “We’ve known him since he was a kid; he’s the carpenter’s son. 58 But Jesus said, “A prophet is taken for granted in his hometown and his family.” He didn’t do many miracles there because of their hostile indifference.
Saint Alphonsus Liguori, Bishop and Doctor of the Church
Where did this man get such wisdom? (Matthew 13:54)
How often does a word you hear or read, a verse from Scripture, or a line from a hymn stir something in your heart? You understand some aspect of who God is, either for the first time or in a whole new light. And with that understanding, you feel a new touch of God’s love or a gentle conviction of sin or a new motivation to serve. You sense a particular direction for your life or a confirmation that you are on the right path.
But then the wonder of all you have received is dulled by that awful word—but. Ordinary objections, human fear, or practical considerations arise and dominate your mind. The comfort, joy, or sense of purpose that you were enjoying gives way, and you are left wondering if anything really happened at all.
This is how the crowd in Jesus’ hometown reacted. Their initial admiration for Jesus, based on his teaching and his reputation as a miracle worker, turned to disbelief when he came back to pay them a visit. Everything they had heard sounded so good, but when they saw him, he looked like the same old carpenter’s son they had always known. As a result, Jesus couldn’t work many mighty deeds there.
The Nazarenes’ lack of faith didn’t totally overpower Jesus; it just hindered them from receiving everything he wanted to give them. Lack of faith doesn’t render Jesus powerless; it renders us unreceptive.
God loves you. He really does. He wants to work in your life. If any thought or emotion rises up that argues otherwise, turn a deaf ear to it! Resist the urge to demand easy explanations or to rely solely on human logic. Instead, tell yourself, “God wants to guide and direct me. He wants to heal and forgive me. He wants me to know him personally.” Believe that God wants to surprise you with his kindness and compassion, and you’ll feel wonder rising up in your heart. And when you do, pause and embrace it.
“Jesus, help me feel your loving touch today.” Amen!

Saint Paul, Minnesota, United States - Lutheran Seminary's God Pause "Moved by the Promise" for Friday, 1 August 2014 - Read Matthew 14:13-21

Saint Paul, Minnesota, United States - Lutheran Seminary's God Pause "Moved by the Promise" for Friday, 1 August 2014 - Read Matthew 14: Supper for Five Thousand
13-14 When Jesus got the news, he slipped away by boat to an out-of-the-way place by himself. But unsuccessfully—someone saw him and the word got around. Soon a lot of people from the nearby villages walked around the lake to where he was. When he saw them coming, he was overcome with pity and healed their sick.
15 Toward evening the disciples approached him. “We’re out in the country and it’s getting late. Dismiss the people so they can go to the villages and get some supper.”
16 But Jesus said, “There is no need to dismiss them. You give them supper.”
17 “All we have are five loaves of bread and two fish,” they said.
18-21 Jesus said, “Bring them here.” Then he had the people sit on the grass. He took the five loaves and two fish, lifted his face to heaven in prayer, blessed, broke, and gave the bread to the disciples. The disciples then gave the food to the congregation. They all ate their fill. They gathered twelve baskets of leftovers. About five thousand were fed.(The Message)
It's not difficult to see what's wrong with the world. There is war and oppression. There is sickness and sorrow. There is hunger. It's easy to see what's wrong, but it seems hard to know what can be done about it. The disciples had no trouble diagnosing the troubling situation around them. A crowd had come to follow Jesus to find healing, but had collectively forgotten to pack a lunch. The disciples point this out to Jesus and his response speaks volumes: "You give them something to eat" (Matthew 14:16). But what could they give? All they had was five loaves and two fish, a laughable amount for such a crowd. But through Jesus even what little they have becomes enough. The crowds are fed and sent away full, with leftovers for the fridge. With God's abundance comes a call: Don't just see the problem. Be the way God will solve it.
Abundant God, there is so much trouble in the world. It can overwhelm us. Open our eyes to your plenteous goodness and inspire us to be means of grace in the world. Amen.
David R. Lyle
Pastor, St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Pawleys Island, S.C.
Master of Divinity , 2002
Matthew 14:13 Now when Jesus heard this, he withdrew from there in a boat to a deserted place by himself. But when the crowds heard it, they followed him on foot from the towns.
14 When he went ashore, he saw a great crowd; and he had compassion for them and cured their sick.
15 When it was evening, the disciples came to him and said, "This is a deserted place, and the hour is now late; send the crowds away so that they may go into the villages and buy food for themselves."
16 Jesus said to them, "They need not go away; you give them something to eat."
17 They replied, "We have nothing here but five loaves and two fish."
18 And he said, "Bring them here to me."
19 Then he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven, and blessed and broke the loaves, and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds.
20 And all ate and were filled; and they took up what was left over of the broken pieces, twelve baskets full.
21 And those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children.(New Revised Standard Version)
