Dear Resurrection Family,
What a beautiful first day of May! I want to begin by encouraging you to bring a friend to worship this weekend. We’ll conclude our Why? series with a sermon on how we can face adversity with hope. The title is drawn from a well-known verse in Paul’s epistle to the Romans, “More than Conquerors.” This week I spent time interviewing Scott and Sheila Cart and their daughters, Kaylee and Marissa. Scott was diagnosed with ALS ten years ago. They’ve faced a battle with this devastating disease, yet as I sat with them in their home, the interview was filled with laughter, love and joy. They will teach us something this weekend about facing adversity with hope.
As part of worship this weekend we’ll give away the electronic version (Kindle) of my book, Why?. I wrote this book in 2011 to help people who are wrestling with the Why? questions. So many people I meet who have lost their faith did so because of a tragedy that happened, or prayers that went unanswered, and the less than helpful answers Christians gave them to the question, Why?. I hoped the book might help Christians and non-Christians alike in thinking about the problem of suffering. We’ll have instructions for downloading the book for free this weekend in the bulletin. We’ll also have physical/print versions available on each of our campuses for $5 for those who would like to have the physical copy. Part of my hope in making the book available free this weekend is that it might be an encouragement for you to invite a friend.
Last weekend we had 273 adults and children who joined the Church of the Resurrection! It was very exciting. This included 194 adults and 79 children. 215 were at the Leawood campus, 28 at Blue Springs, and 30 at Downtown (West will have their Coffee with the Pastors this weekend). We’ve listed our new members at the bottom of this enote. Please look over the list to see if you know any of our new members and if you do, drop them a note to welcome them. New members, please arrive a few minutes early for worship this weekend - we’ll officially welcome you at the very beginning of worship.
This Monday is our Golf Tournament and Auction. The tournament is sold out, but you can still bid on items in the auction online. Most of t he items have had no bidders yet - and there are some great items. A $66 value Chick-Fil-A meal, Royals tickets, a 3-night stay at a bed and breakfast at a winery in Tuscany, free food for a year at Sheridan’s Unforked restaurant, Ona Belle’s desserts for a year (she makes some of the best pies I’ve ever eaten), tickets to the Masters Tournament, and more. Click here to view and bid!
If you love golf and like to make a difference while you are playing, I want to mention two other golf tournament’s I’d love for you to know about. On June 13 at Sycamore Ridge there is the Gumpy’s Foundation tournament. This tournament is benefitting a 15-month-old little girl in our congregation named MacKenna who is being treated for Neurofibromatosis Type 1. I’m grateful for Gumpy’s Foundation that is hosting this tournament to help defray some of MacKenna’s ongoing care costs. At our Christmas Eve services two years ago it was MacKenna I held in my arms representing baby Jesus. Click here to visit her tournament page.
The other tournament is the Jeff Flottman Golf Tournament. Jeff was a leader here at Resurrection for two decades. His death this last year was a tremendous loss for our congregation. In addition to the many leadership roles he served in at Resurrection, he was also passionate about fighting poverty and homelessness. On August 10 a tournament is being sponsored by his foundation, remembering Jeff by raising funds for Avenue of Life, one of our mission partners in Kansas City. The tournament will be held at Leawood Country Club. Find out more by clicking here.
Next weekend is Mother’s Day. On the Leawood campus, we’re planning a special breakfast from 7:50 am to 8:55 am on Sunday, May 10, just before the 9 am worship services catered by Hyvee with egg casserole, sausage, fruit salad and more. The breakfast is free but donations are welcome. Building Better Mom’s is sponsoring a free photo booth taking pictures of moms with their kids. My sermon that weekend will look at some of the best and the worst moms in the Bible - offering a bit of humor and inspiration as we celebrate and remember our moms. Reservations are required for the free breakfast - click here to make your reservation.
Next Thursday I’ll speak at the Crossroads Luncheon. Crossroads is our ministry for those of us 50 and up. At the lunch I’ll speak about the Holy Land - offering a bit of history, geography, geopolitics related to the conflicts there, but mostly taking you on a tour of the land, showing you the things you’d see if you were to visit the Holy Land. The luncheon is in the Leawood Student Center, but those of you 50 and up from all campuses are invited. Click here to make your reservation.
There’s been quite a bit of interest expressed in a trip to the Holy Land next February. We’re putting together the details now and will have more information in two weeks, with sign-ups the week after that. The dates for the trip are February 13-22. This will be a remarkable experience as we retrace the footsteps of Jesus. If you’d like to receive more information about the trip when it is available, please click on this link,sue.thompson@cor.org. Signing up for information does not guarantee a spot on the trip, but it does ensure you have the information about registration.
Don’t forget to invite a friend to join you in worship this weekend as we sing, pray and consider how we can be, More than Conquerors…facing life with hope.
In Christ’s love,
Adam
