Earlier this month, I introduced the 40-day Lenten Challenge
This year, I hope you'll join me as I read through the Gospel of John from Ash Wednesday through Palm Sunday. My new book, John: The Gospel of Light and Life, is the perfect companion to the Lenten Challenge, as it helps you explore the major themes of John and also features the Scripture text in its entirety.
I've been posting excerpts from the book to my blog. Take a minute and check out:
Light Shining in the Darkness
John frequently uses the idea of light in his gospel. Light is a metaphor for several things and is always understood over and against darkness. Sometimes darkness is synonymous with spiritual blindness or a failure to understand what it means to be human. Sometimes darkness refers to evil. Jesus came to dispel the darkness. He came to be the light for us.
Changing Water Into Wine
We focus on Jesus' first miraculous sign in John 2:1-12-turning water into wine-and how we might study it to find deeper meaning. John tells us that the wine that Jesus created was better than the wine the guests had been drinking before. John wants us to see that the life Jesus offers is richer, deeper, and of a higher quality than the life we live apart from him.
Find out more about the Lenten Challenge and plan to join us in reading through the Gospel of John for Lent, beginning February 10.
The Gospel of John is the most deeply spiritual of the four gospels. This writing is filled with rich images and profound truths, but John notes that his aim in writing the gospel is that readers will not only believe in Jesus Christ, but that they "may have life in his name." This Lent, adults, youth, and children alike can experience a season of spiritual growth and life-changing renewal in Adam Hamilton's six-week, DVD-series, John: The Gospel of Light and Life. You'll follow the life, ministry, death, and resurrection of Jesus through the Gospel of John and understand the context of some of the best-known verses in the New Testament. Everything you need to lead small groups of all ages is available for this special study.
