Dear Resurrection Family,
Tonight is our annual All Church Gathering when Resurrection leaders from all campuses come together to get the inside scoop on what’s happened in the last year and what’s coming up in the next year. Great fellowship and inspiration. If you are a leader, hope to be a leader, or just really love the mission and ministry of the church, plan to join us tonight. Here’s a bit of what we have on tap for tonight:
Chili and soup from 5:30 to 6:30 pm, then the meeting officially kicks off at6:30 with a couple of songs from the Africa University Choir. We’ll quickly have a recap of 2015 finances and review our budget for 2016. You’ll hear a report from each of our campuses and see the building plans for our west and downtown campuses. We have four completed panels from the stained glass window on display, and you’ll have a chance to see them up close in a way no one will ever see them again once they are installed. We’ll also get an exclusive look at the making of our window with a 5-minute preview of a documentary being made about The Resurrection Window, and another video that will take you inside the new Leawood sanctuary and show you what’s going on inside! You won’t want to miss these really cool videos! We’ll end the evening with a look at where God is leading us in the future and you’ll be out before8:30 pm. We will continue to take registrations for dinner until 3:00 this afternoon. Please click on this link to register. By the way, if you can’t be here in person, but would like to join us online you can join us at rezonline.org for a live simulcast at 6:30 CST tonight!
This weekend in worship we’ll continue in our series of sermons on The Issues that Divide, by looking at the issue of Christianity and Health Care. Some have suggested that, after the primary season, health care will be one of the biggest issues of the fall 2016 presidential campaign. Nearly every candidate, both Republican and Democrat, has a proposal regarding health care. This weekend I’ll share with you a bit of the history of health care and the role Christianity played in the development of health care. We’ll look at what the debate is all about, and how Christianity might have a very important role to play in reforming health care. You’ll hear from the former CEO of Shawnee Mission Health Care System, a family physician, and the CEO of the American Academy of Family Physicians. In the process you’ll be inspired and challenged.
We also have the Africa University choir from Zimbabwe joining us in worship at the Leawood campus this weekend! You may remember that I preached from Africa University last year and shared with you the story of the amazing things that have happen there as a result of our mission giving. There are 1,400 students from 26 different African nations that attend AU. Many of Africa’s emerging leaders are graduates of this university in Africa, and through them the world is changing in Africa. You’ll be moved by hearing the AU choir in worship this weekend!
Next week we’ll conclude this series of sermons by looking at guns, gun control and the Bible. Today I’m going with our film crew to a gun range owned by one of our members to talk about the issues, and for him to give me a lesson in firing a weapon – I’ve not shot a weapon since I was a kid. This topic was the number one issue chosen by our congregation in a survey last fall, following the shootings in San Bernardino.
The week after next is the kick off of our Lenten sermon series on the Gospel of John. We’ll encourage each of you to take the Lenten Challenge of reading the entire Gospel of John during the season of Lent. I believe every Christian should make it their goal to read through a gospel at least once a year. Our sermons, small groups and GPS readings will all be centered on John during the 40 days of Lent.
Last Sunday afternoon we had our first Coffee with the Pastors of 2016. We welcomed 195 new adults and children into the membership of our church at Resurrection Leawood plus an additional 15 at Resurrection Blue Springs. Please take a look at the list of names of our new members at the end of this e-note and take the time to reach out to those you know to welcome them to your church family. Welcome new members!
This weekend we’ll kick off our Souper Bowl Food Drive. I want to encourage you to join LaVon and me in helping to “sack” hunger in Kansas City. In the narthex of each of our campuses there will be sacks with lists of food items we hope you’ll bring back the following weekend. All the food items will be given to help families throughout the Kansas City area. Don’t miss this simple way to share the gift of food with those in need. Click here for more information.
Monday and Tuesday of this coming week is our winter blood drive at Leawood. To sign up in advance and save a bit of time click on this link. In thirty minutes you can help save a life and, after you complete your donation, stop by for a free slice of Tippins pie!
I’d like to encourage the women in our church to take a look at next weekend’sInspired for Life Women’s Conference February 5-6 at our Leawood Campus. This year we have some amazing guest speakers – Glennon Doyle Melton, from the award-winning blog Monastery.com and author of the NY Times best-seller, Carry On, Warrior, and Amena Brown, author of Breaking Old Rhythms. Both speakers will focus on cultivating thankfulness and developing a lifelong habit of gratitude. For more information or to register click here.
I’d like to welcome to our staff pastor Susan Cox, joining us as a Pastor to our Silver Link Community – our ministry with senior adults. She joins Courtney Felzke who will continue to give direction to this ministry. Susan is coming out of an early retirement to serve on our team. She was formerly a district superintendent in the Heartland North District of the Missouri Annual Conference. Susan’s a terrific edition to our team. Welcome, Susan!
Finally, I’d like to mention one of our upcoming training conferences in Congregational Care. For those of you who read my e-note from other congregations, our Congregational Care Ministry Seminar provides training on how you can strengthen the congregational care ministry in your church. The seminar is April 7-9th. The Super Early Bird pricing is good through February 3rd. For more information or to register, click here.
Finally, I’m looking for volunteers to help me with my sermons. Specifically, following the interviews I often do for sermons, I need someone who can transcribe those interviews so I can quickly find the portions I’d like to use for the video clips in the sermons. If you are a fast typist, would be interested in watching the entire interviews recorded for my sermons (of which the congregation typically only sees a small part) and you’d like to help me with my sermon preparation, please contact Cathy Bien, our Director of Communication, by clicking here.
Don’t miss tonight’s All Church Gathering and a great weekend in worship!
Adam
