Greetings RezDowntowners,
Lent has officially arrived and with it comes the 40-day journey toward Easter where we focus intentionally on drawing nearer to God. This journey began on Ash Wednesday with a packed house in worship as together we wrote down our confessions and surrendered our fears while receiving ashes that reminded us that the pathway toward the life we’re looking for always leads through death. This is God’s promise; the worst thing is never the last thing and even in those moments when we feel like we’re walking through the valley we have no reason to fear, because God is with us, leading us to the resurrection life found at Easter. I hope you’ll join us on this journey of Lent, draw nearer to God daily, and let it begin in worship this weekend as we reclaim another foundation of the faith in our series on Breaking Ground.
This weekend in worship I’ll be preaching on our mission and our purpose, another foundational teaching from the Gospel of Matthew, the Great Commission. If you have the ability, I want to encourage you to worship with me at our Grand location at 10:45am. Due to our limited space in worship at 1522 McGee at 10:45am, I will be preaching live again at 1508 Grand this weekend at that hour, and I would love for you to join me there as a way of making more space in worship across both buildings. If you haven’t experienced Grand worship as of yet, this weekend will be another great opportunity to do so. Until then, please know how grateful I am for you and I’m excited to celebrate all that God is doing as we reclaim the foundations of our faith!
Lastly, for those of you who were unable to make it to worship last weekend. I had the privilege of announcing that our Ground Breaking Weekend will be taking place on the weekend of March 11th and 12th. After each of our worship services that weekend, we’ll process out to our parking lot rain or shine to break ground on the first new church building in downtown Kansas City in over 80 years! I hope you’ll save the date, invite friends and join us in worship that weekend!
In the meantime, here are several opportunities for connection within the life of our church:
We’re “hunting” for Easter Egg help!! We are about one month away from the City Wide Easter Egg Hunt at Liberty Memorial (on April 8) If you love to plan things, have super organizational skills, or just love to help out with kids… come join in an evening of planning and organizing for the Easter Egg Hunt 2017 on Tuesday, March 7 at 6:30pm at the Grand Building. RSVP to Sarah.brischle@cor.org. It will be a time to dream, develop and discuss the Easter Egg Hunt all while enjoying some dinner together. Come be a part of one of the best events that happens in the spring!
Travel to the Holy Land with Pastor Scott. On November 8-17 Pastor Scott will lead a spiritual journey of a lifetime to the Holy Land. On this pilgrimage you’ll have a chance to retrace the life and walk in the footsteps of Jesus Christ. You’ll have a chance to visit the cities and sites we read about in the Bible. It is something we recommend everybody experiences if at all possible. For more information visit Connection Point this weekend to pick up an informational brochure before or after worship. To register or for more info, visit cor.org/downtown/events.
Caregiving Group! Please join us on Tuesday, March 7 at 6:30pm in the 1522 McGee coffee shop to hear from Courtney Feltzke as she speaks to us about the Silverlink Ministry and the “seasons” of caregiving. This is a group of people coming together to pray and create a network of folks in the same boat. This group is open to anyone, whether you attend Resurrection or not, who is caring for a family member or friend and needs a support system. We meet each 1st Tuesday of each month. If you have any questions please contact Kris Drummond at kdrummond6@gmail.com
Lenten Study: From Ash & Cinder with Pastor Scott and Glory Revival.
Starting Tuesday, March 14, at 6:30pm at 1522 McGee, Resurrection Downtown will begin a four-week Lenten study with Pastor Scott Chrostek and the music of Glory Revival. Through the art of worship and Scriptural teaching we will go deep into the practice of lament. During this time of year we all feel a tension. We see life springing up all around us; yet we struggle with heartache and injustice. Thankfully we are not alone. In the practice of lament, we learn how to hold the brokenness of the world before God who is with us and invites us into bringing new life out of the ash and cinder.
Women’s Breakfast Series – Join us on March 11 at 9 am at 1522 McGee as we gather for a time of fun, food and fellowship. We will hear from Joy Snyder, an Apprentice for Conscious Transformation, a program that supports people in establishing a mindfulness practice around the mind, emotions, body, and spirit. She is also an attorney and social entrepreneur with a passion for supporting others in achieving personal fulfillment and transformation in their lives. Joy will share her journey of personal transformation and how embracing mindfulness practices has helped her find peace, an ability to create a new life in the midst of personal challenges, and most importantly, a deep connection with God and her soul. Bring a friend, and bring a breakfast dish to share. Or just come and join us – we always have plenty to eat! I am thankful for you all and I'm privileged to serve God with you here in Kansas City. I'm looking forward to this weekend in worship, continuing this series of sermons, and sharing with you the good news of the great commission. It is going to be a great adventure, but until then enjoy another amazing Friday and I'll see you this weekend.
Many blessings and God's Peace,
Scott
