Open House Sunday! Invite someone to come with you.
From Pastor Molly: See...I think this church is such a special community. I am grateful to get to be your pastor.
I love that we include people of all ages and stages of life. We have the most fabulous crew of 90-somethings, and such beautiful little ones in the nursery. Some of you have been here your whole lives (whether that's 80 years or 8 years), and others have just joined the community (at age 90 or as an infant). I am encouraged by your commitment to investing in ministries with young people, as evidenced by our passionate staff with children and youth, and by your regular volunteering to help with VBS.
More than once, I've heard church leaders make it clear that we prioritize ministry over church buildings. More than once, I've heard testimony about how this church community has helped people when they were most in need. Often, I've seen how you welcome everyone.
I am inspired by our commitment to serve the community through hosting Shared Bread every Wednesday. I love this church's willingness to go to Baja or to build a house with Corazon; to make donations of all sizes for people in need nearby and around the world.
So, I have to say that I'm excited about our Open House Sunday this weekend. I pray that it will, indeed, give some of our neighbors a chance to see some of this for themselves. I ask for your help, in inviting people you know. And, I ask your help in welcoming whoever comes to join us this Sunday.
Grace and peace,
Pastor Molly
I'm starting a new series on Sunday: "See and Be Seen." I hope it will answer questions that you are asking about how God sees us, and how God asks us to see the world. Plus, between our services and at the Potluck Lunch after 10:30 worship, we'll have activities and opportunities to connect with the community and ministries here. And, to help you see and be seen, some limited edition FUMCRB sunglasses you can take with you...
In Worship This Week
Sunday, September 9"See and Be Seen: I See You. You Matter"
Rev. Molly Vetter, preaching
Mark 7:24-37
Mark 7:24 Next, Yeshua left that district and went off to the vicinity of Tzor and Tzidon. There he found a house to stay in and wanted to remain unrecognized, but keeping hidden proved impossible. 25 Instead, a woman whose little daughter had an unclean spirit in her came to him and fell down at his feet. 26 The woman was a Greek, by birth a Syro-phoenician, and she begged him to drive the demon out of her daughter. 27 He said, “Let the children be fed first, for it is not right to take the children’s food and toss it to their pet dogs.” 28 She answered him, “That is true, sir; but even the dogs under the table eat the children’s leftovers.” 29 Then he said to her, “For such an answer you may go on home; the demon has left your daughter.” 30 She went back home and found the child lying on the couch, the demon gone.
31 Then he left the district of Tzor and went through Tzidon to Lake Kinneret and on to the region of the Ten Towns. 32 They brought him a man who was deaf and had a speech impediment and asked Yeshua to lay his hand on him. 33 Taking him off alone, away from the crowd, Yeshua put his fingers into the man’s ears, spat, and touched his tongue; 34 then, looking up to heaven, he gave a deep groan and said to him, “Hippatach!” (that is, “Be opened!”). 35 His ears were opened, his tongue was freed, and he began speaking clearly. 36 Yeshua ordered the people to tell no one; but the more he insisted, the more zealously they spread the news. 37 People were overcome with amazement. “Everything he does, he does well!” they said. “He even makes the deaf hear and the dumb speak!” (Complete Jewish Bible).
Mark 7:24-37
Verse 24
[24] And from thence he arose, and went into the borders of Tyre and Sidon, and entered into an house, and would have no man know it: but he could not be hid.
Matthew 15:21.1q
Verse 26
[26] The woman was a Greek, a Syrophenician by nation; and she besought him that he would cast forth the devil out of her daughter.
The woman was a Greek (that is, a Gentile, not a Jew) a Syrophenician or Canaanite. Canaan was also called Syrophenicia, as lying between Syria, properly so called, and Phenicia.
Verse 31
[31] And again, departing from the coasts of Tyre and Sidon, he came unto the sea of Galilee, through the midst of the coasts of Decapolis.
Matthew 15:29.
Verse 33
[33] And he took him aside from the multitude, and put his fingers into his ears, and he spit, and touched his tongue;
He put his fingers into his ears — Perhaps intending to teach us, that we are not to prescribe to him (as they who brought this man attempted to do) but to expect his blessing by whatsoever means he pleases: even though there should be no proportion or resemblance between the means used, and the benefit to be conveyed thereby.
Verse 34
[34] And looking up to heaven, he sighed, and saith unto him, Ephphatha, that is, Be opened.
Ephphatha — This was a word of SOVEREIGN AUTHORITY, not an address to God for power to heal: such an address was needless; for Christ had a perpetual fund of power residing in himself, to work all miracles whenever he pleased, even to the raising the dead, John 5:21,26.
Verse 36
[36] And he charged them that they should tell no man: but the more he charged them, so much the more a great deal they published it;
Them — The blind man and those that brought him. (John Wesley's Explanatory Notes).

Special Music: Our Chancel Choir returns to sing in worship; "You Raise Me Up," sung by Chase Matthews
"You Raise Me Up" by Josh Groban
[Verse 1]
When I am down and, oh my soul, so weary
When troubles come and my heart burdened me
Then, I am still and wait here in the silence
Until you come and sit a while with me
[Chorus]
You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains
You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas
I am strong, when I am on your shoulders
You raise me up, to more than I can be
[Chorus]
You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains
You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas
I am strong, when I am on your shoulders
You raise me up, to more than I can be
You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains
You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas
I am strong, when I am on your shoulders
You raise me up, to more than I can be
[Chorus]
You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains
You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas
I am strong, when I am on your shoulders
You raise me up, to more than I can be
[Outro]
You raise me up, to more than I can be

Jim Raycroft
Music Director, Jim Raycroft, will share upcoming worship music
selections and a little bit of history, too. by Jim Raycroft
This week we welcome back our good friend Chase Matthews to sing You Raise Me Up to kick off the fall season with the choir. He was originally recommended to us by our previous soprano section leader Julie, when I was looking for a "powerhouse rock tenor" to sing Gethsemane from Jesus Christ Superstar. It happened that Chase was singing with Julie in one of her shows and had sung the role before. Needless to say, he brought the house down, and has done so each time he's been back. He's all over the entertainment world, having been involved in dozens of movies, TV shows and theatrical productions. On the stage, he's been in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Jesus Christ Superstar, Vox Lumiere's Phantom of the Opera, Mame, Fiddler on the Roof and Company. On the big and little screen, he's starred in 1,000 Ways To Die, Anino, Murder Book, Occupational Hazards, Workaholic and A.D.D.T.V. w/Chase Matthews. Watch for him Peacekeepers, which is now in pre-production. He's represented by Hollywood Original Talent, and you can check him out at www.chasematthews.net .
Down To The River To Pray, also known as The Good Old Wayand Come Let Us All Go Down, has been described as a Christian folk hymn, a gospel song, an Appalachian song and an African-American spiritual. The exact origin of the song is unknown, but research suggests it was written by an African slave. The earliest known version of it was published in 1867 in Slave Songs of the United States, and bore the title The Good Old Way. Since then, it has been recorded by numerous artists, including Lead Belly, Doc Watson, The King's Singers and the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. Our rendition was written for the George Clooney movie Brother, Where Art Thou in the river baptism scene, and was arranged for the movie by a friend of mine, noted film composer and orchestrator JAC Redford.
You Raise Me Up was originally composed by the Norwegian-Irish duo Secret Garden, and was initially an instrumental titled Silent Story. Composer Rolf Løvland approached Irish novelist/songwriter Brendan Graham to write the lyrics (which probably appealed to Graham due to the similarity between the tune and the tune for the Irish folk song Danny Boy). It was released in 2002 on Secret Garden's album Once In A Red Moon, sung by Irish singer Brian Kennedy, and sold well in Ireland and Norway. In 2003, David Foster decided to produce the song and chose young up-and-coming singer Josh Groban to sing it. It was released on the album Closer in 2003 and rose to #1 on Billboard's Adult Contemporary Chart in early 2004, where it remained for 6 weeks.
David Wallace Crowder, who goes by the mononymous stage name Crowder (in the finest tradition of Cher, Madonna, Adele and Prince), was the lead singer in the now defunct David Crowder Band, a contemporary worship band that disbanded in 2012. He has since gone on to a solo career, releasing his first solo studio album in 2014, under the sixsteps/sparrow label, called Neon Steeple. Come As You Are, one of the cuts from that album, peaked at #3 on the US Christian Songs chart and went on to receive a Grammy nomination in 2015 for Best Contemporary Christian Music Performance/Song.
Matt Maher is a Canadian Christian artist who was born in Newfoundland, studied jazz on a scholarship from Arizona State University in Tempe and now lives in Nashville. He's written and released 7 studio albums to date, 3 of which have reached the top 25 of Billboard's Christian Album chart, and 4 of his singles have reached the top 25 of Billboard's Christian Songs chart. A practicing Catholic, he was asked to lead worship for crowds of thousands at the Rally for Youth and Seminarians in Yonkers, New York during the visit by Pope Benedict XVI in 2008, and in 2013 he sang Lord, I Need You for an audience of about 4 million, including Pope Francis, for World Youth Day in Rio de Janerio. His song And All The People Said Amen was the title track for his first compilation album, released in 2013. The album charted at #5 on Billboard's Christian Albums.
