SoSA field gleaning & food delivery, Nov. 3-6
Volunteers are needed to glean winter squash from fields in Liberty, Mo., Nov. 3-6 and especially to deliver the squash to local pantries in Kansas. The gleaning and delivery are part of the Society of St. Andrew’s efforts to feed the hungry.

Cat-Hawk Challenge, Nov. 9
The 2013 Cat-Hawk Challenge is Nov. 9 5-7 p.m. at Valley View UMC in Overland Park. The challenge is an annual fundraiser to support United Methodist campus ministries at the University of Kansas and Kansas State University. Enjoy a free dinner, a pep-rally atmosphere and wear your favorite school colors. It is a fun evening for the whole family and includes free child care.

Early Response Team training, Nov. 16
You can help after disaster strikes by becoming an early responder. Early Response Teams enter disaster areas as soon as emergency workers have declared the area safe and ERTs have been requested. They work under the direction of the local disaster coordinator.
An Early Response Team training will be Nov. 16 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Silver Lake UMC. The class fee is $25, which covers materials and ERT T-shirt.
Your Health is Worth It workshop, Jan. 14
The Great Plains Health and Wellness Committee and the United Methodist Health Ministry Fund are sponsoring a free workshop Jan. 14 from noon to 3 p.m. for clergy attending the Orders and Fellowship gathering at United Methodist Church of the Resurrection.
Rev. Tom Mattick, a frequent presenter on clergy wellness for the General Board of Pensions and Health Benefits, the Health Ministry Fund and Clergy Wellness LLC, will be the presenter.

Orders and Fellowship Meeting, Jan. 14-16
The Orders and Fellowship Meeting, formerly Joint Called Clergy Session, will be Jan. 14-16, at United Methodist Church of the Resurrection, 13720 Roe Blvd. in Leawood. The theme for the 2014 gathering is “Evoke Ministry Everyday and Everywhere.”
Rev. Dr. Robert Martin, new dean of Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, D.C., will be the featured speaker.

Kansas East students receive UM scholarships
The General Board of Higher Education and Ministry’s Office of Loans and Scholarships has awarded more than 2,500 students a total of $5 million in award money for 2013. Some of the loan and scholarship funding comes from the United Methodist Student Day, World Communion Sunday and Native American Sunday special offerings. The remaining funds for these awards come from gifts, annuities and endowments.
Nineteen students in the Kansas East Conference received GBHEM scholarships in 2013 totaling $32,300.

Homeless ministry born from pastor’s chance encounter
A chance encounter between a homeless man and Rev. Ray Amos Jr., pastor at St. Matthew UMC in Kingsport, Tenn., led to what is now the Secondhand Shoes ministry. 2016 General Conference to see drop in delegates
The 2016 General Conference in Portland, Ore., will have about 15 percent fewer delegates than recent gatherings of The United Methodist Church’s top lawmaking body. The Commission on the 2016 General Conference voted Oct. 18 to set the target number of delegates at 850.
Survey on online communion
As part of a recent discussion of the possibility of online Eucharist, church leaders endorsed surveying United Methodists to get their thoughts on the practice. All United Methodist members, clergy and other individuals who attend or affiliate with The United Methodist Church are invited to fill out this short survey on Holy Communion online.
The submission deadline for the next issue of the Communiqué is 5 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 4.
