Stephen M. Miller – Friday, 27 December 2013 - Hi, RezChat
Hope you had a wonderful Christmas holiday. If nothing else, you got a White Christmas if you were in Greater Kansas City.
I've had fun planning Sunday's session on worship music.
Did you know there's a Top Ten in worship music?
   No kidding.
One of the songs we'll listen to, evaluate, and chat about is the number one worship song used in churches this year. That ranking is based on royalties paid out from number of uses in worship services.
I'm toying with letting you listen...just for fun...to a gospel song I wrote when I was in high school. I'm not sure I'll be able to work up the courage, though. It's pretty bad. To preserve it for Tin Ear Posterity, I created it with my desktop microphone and the GarageBand iPad app. Enough said.
I may not work up the courage. There are healthy limits to self-deprecation.

SING TO THE LORD A NEW SONG. But don't we love the oldies, too.
Sunday's session: Good Vibrations
I'M STOKED about Sunday's session.
I think you're going to enjoy it.
It might even change the way you think about some of the songs we sing at RezWest, for better or worse. I suspect mostly for better. I know I have a new appreciation for some of the lyrics, now that I've had more of a chance to think about them...the lyrics of one song in particular.
You'll be familiar with most of the songs, so you'll be welcome to sing along if you like. I've always wondered what RezChat would sound like singing in a trailer.
Since some of you use mobile devices to read your Bibles in class, why don't I paste the song lyrics onto this email. That will let some of you eager students plan ahead, listening to the songs and thinking about them.
I'll paste the lyrics below. There's one song I doubt you'll recognize, and my main question for that one will be "Would this work as a worship song?"
To hear any of the songs, Google the title, adding "YouTube."
I'll invite Nathan Brooks to swing by if he has the time and energy after all those Christmas-season services. But I checked with him a couple of weeks ago and he wasn't sure he'd be up to it after the musical marathon. But I'll let him know he's welcome.
Here's the Bible passage we'll read, as an encouragement to sing our worship to God. This version is from The Message.
Psalm 98
1 Sing to God a brand-new song.
He’s made a world of wonders!
He rolled up his sleeves,
He set things right.
2 God made history with salvation,
He showed the world what he could do.
3 He remembered to love us, a bonus
To his dear family, Israel—indefatigable love.
The whole earth comes to attention.
Look—God’s work of salvation!
4 Shout your praises to God, everybody!
Let loose and sing! Strike up the band!
5 Round up an orchestra to play for God,
Add on a hundred-voice choir.
6 Feature trumpets and big trombones,
Fill the air with praises to King God.
7 Let the sea and its fish give a round of applause,
With everything living on earth joining in.
8 Let ocean breakers call out, “Encore!”
And mountains harmonize the finale—
9 A tribute to God when he comes,
When he comes to set the earth right.
He’ll straighten out the whole world,
He’ll put the world right, and everyone in it.
Song lyrics
10,000 Reasons by Matt Redman
Bless the Lord, O my soul
O my soul
Worship His holy name
Sing like never before
O my soul
I'll worship Your holy name
The sun comes up, it's a new day dawning
It's time to sing Your song again
Whatever may pass, and whatever lies before me
Let me be singing when the evening comes
Bless the Lord, O my soul
O my soul
Worship His holy name
Sing like never before
O my soul
I'll worship Your holy name
You're rich in love, and You're slow to anger
Your name is great, and Your heart is kind
For all Your goodness I will keep on singing
Ten thousand reasons for my heart to find
Bless the Lord, O my soul
O my soul
Worship His holy name
Sing like never before
O my soul
I'll worship Your holy name
And on that day when my strength is failing
The end draws near and my time has come
Still my soul will sing Your praise unending
Ten thousand years and then forevermore
Bless the Lord, O my soul
O my soul
Worship His holy name
Sing like never before
O my soul
I'll worship Your holy name
Jesus, I'll worship Your holy name
Lord, I'll worship Your holy name
Sing like never before
O my soul
I'll worship Your holy name
Jesus, I'll worship Your holy name
I'll worship Your holy name
"This Is the Stuff," by Francesca Battistelli
I lost my keys in the great unknown
And call me please 'cause I can't find my phone
This is the stuff that drives me crazy
This is the stuff that's getting to me lately
In the middle of my little mess
I forget how big I'm blessed
This is the stuff that gets under my skin
But I've gotta trust You know exactly what You're doing
Might not be what I would choose
But this the stuff You use
45 in a 35 sirens and fines
While I'm running behind
Whoa ho ho
This is the stuff that drives me crazy
This is the stuff that's getting to me lately
In the middle of my little mess,
I forget how big I'm blessed
This is the stuff that gets under my skin
But I've gotta trust You know exactly what You're doing
Might not be what I would choose
But this the stuff You use
So break me of impatience
Conquer my frustrations
I've got a new appreciation
It's not the end of the world
Whoa ho ho ho
Oooooh This is the stuff that drives me crazy
This is the stuff
Someone save me
In the middle of my little mess
I forget how big I'm blessed
This is the stuff that gets under my skin
But I've gotta trust You know exactly what You're doing
Might not be what I would choose
But this the stuff You use
Whoa whoa ho ho
This is the stuff You use.
The Power of Your Love, by Hillsong
Lord I come to You
Let my heart be changed, renewed
Flowing from the grace
That I found in You.
And Lord I've come to know
The weaknesses I see in me
Will be stripped away
By the power of Your love.
Hold me close
Let Your love surround me
Bring me near
Draw me to Your side.
And as I wait
I'll rise up like the eagle
And I will soar with You
Your Spirit leads me on
In the power of Your love.
Lord unveil my eyes
Let me see You face to face
The knowledge of Your love
As You live in me.
Lord renew my mind
As Your will unfolds in my life
In living every day
by the power of Your love.
Be Thou my Vision, by 4HIM
Be Thou my Vision, O Lord of my heart;
Naught be all else to me, save that Thou art
Thou my best Thought, by day or by night,
Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light.
Be Thou my Wisdom, and Thou my true Word;
I ever with Thee and Thou with me, Lord;
Thou my great Father, I Thy true son;
Thou in me dwelling, and I with Thee one.
Riches I heed not, nor man’s empty praise,
Thou mine Inheritance, now and always:
Thou and Thou only, first in my heart,
High King of Heaven, my Treasure Thou art.
[repeat first verse above]
High King of Heaven, my victory won,
May I reach Heaven’s joys, O bright Heaven’s Sun!
Heart of my own heart, whatever befall,
Still be my Vision, O Ruler of all.

Linda Miller will have info for us on Sunday about our Second Sunday Social, which is a wonderful name for our social; thank you Lisa Rock.
It's so much better than the name I suggested: RezChew.

That's all for now. Have a safe weekend. Come on Sunday if you can.
