First United Methodist of Redondo Beach Weekly News for Thursday, 29 May 2014
Sunday, June 1
8:30am Informal Worship in Epworth Lounge
9:30am Contemporary Worship in the Sanctuary
11:00am Traditional Worship in the Sanctuary
   Sunday's Scripture:
Acts 1: 6-14
Acts 1:6 Therefore when they had come together, they asked him, “Lord, are you now restoring the kingdom to Israel?”
7 He said to them, “It isn’t for you to know times or seasons which the Father has set within his own authority. 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you. You will be witnesses to me in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the uttermost parts of the earth.”
9 When he had said these things, as they were looking, he was taken up, and a cloud received him out of their sight. 10 While they were looking steadfastly into the sky as he went, behold,[a] two men stood by them in white clothing, 11 who also said, “You men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into the sky? This Jesus, who was received up from you into the sky will come back in the same way as you saw him going into the sky.”
12 Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mountain called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a Sabbath day’s journey away. 13 When they had come in, they went up into the upper room, where they were staying; that is Peter, John, James, Andrew, Philip, Thomas, Bartholomew, Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus, Simon the Zealot, and Judas the son of James. 14 All these with one accord continued steadfastly in prayer and supplication, along with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers.
Footnotes:
a. Acts 1:10 “Behold”, from “ἰδοὺ”, means look at, take notice, observe, see, or gaze at. It is often used as an interjection.
------
John Wesley's Notes-Commentary:
Acts 1: 6-14
Verse 6
[6] When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel?
Dost thou at this time — At the time thou now speakest of? not many days hence? restore the kingdom to Israel? - They still seemed to dream of an outward, temporal kingdom, in which the Jews should have dominion over all nations. It seems they came in a body, having before concerted the design, to ask when this kingdom would come.
Verse 7
[7] And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power.
The times or the seasons — Times, in the language of the Scriptures, denote a longer; seasons, a shorter space.
Which the Father hath put in his own power — To be revealed when and to whom it pleaseth him.
Verse 8
[8] But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
But ye shall receive power — and shall be witnesses to me - That is, ye shall be empowered to witness my Gospel, both by your preaching and suffering.
Verse 12
[12] Then returned they unto Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is from Jerusalem a sabbath day's journey.
A Sabbath-day's journey — The Jews generally fix this to two thousand cubits, which is not a mile.
Verse 13
[13] And when they were come in, they went up into an upper room, where abode both Peter, and James, and John, and Andrew, Philip, and Thomas, Bartholomew, and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon Zelotes, and Judas the brother of James.
They went up into the upper room — The upper rooms, so frequently mentioned in Scripture, were chambers in the highest part of the house, set apart by the Jews for private prayer. These, on account of their being so retired and convenient, the apostles now used for all the offices of religion. Matthew 10:2; Mark 3:14; Luke 6:13.
Verse 14
[14] These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren.
His brethren — His near kinsmen, who for some time did not believe; it seems not till near his death.

Summer Plans
Over lunch today, I had a lively conversation with friends about
our summer plans--it's fun to hear about plans for new adventures, travel, family reunions. Even when we're not on vacation, the sunlight lasts longer into the evening, opening up that sweet time for relaxing or playing outside after work. It's busier around the church lately, with folks enjoying the Pier and summertime at the beach.
This summer, here at church, we'll have some of our usual fun--a Youth Banquet, Sierra Service Project trips for our youth, Vacation Bible School. Also, we're trying some new things around the church, too: we'll be hiring a college intern again, adding a new week of Theatre Arts Camp, hosting "LemonAID Stands" to end malaria.
This summer, we'll also having a sort of a family reunion in our worship--starting June 15, we've combined our services into two, so that we can mix it up across the generations of our church. I'm excited about the energy that will come from our being together in worship.
Before then, we get to celebrate Pentecost and Confirmation on June 8, in one worship service at 10:30.
But first, this Sunday, we get one more chance to worship in our three services. It's the final week of our school year Sunday School for kids, and there's good stuff happening everywhere. I look forward to seeing you in church.
grace and peace,

Summer Worship Schedule
This summer, we are trying a new worship schedule, with new opportunities to come together as an intergenerational, inclusive and life-filled congregation. Changes start on June 8, when we will combine for just one worship service at 10:30 a.m. (and celebrate Confirmation and Pentecost). The choir, our contemporary musicians, organ and piano will join together to lead celebratory worship.
Starting June 15, we will have TWO worship services through the summer: a casual worship service in Epworth Lounge at 8:30, and a festive combined community worship service in the sanctuary at 10:30. I'm excited about ways we can build on our strengths in worship and music. We will have the privilege of celebrating Linda Waterman's retirement together during this season, with some special choir music that honors her faithful and creative leadership. We will also have some baptisms planned, a Vacation Bible School celebration, and more-during the weeks before our new summer theatre arts camp for kids, we will have an extra children's Sunday School time, too. Often, our children will be with us in worship-our Children's Ministry will offer a special education time for kids during the sermon, too.
I am continually inspired by the warmth of the community in our church, a church "family" that spans generations. I look forward to working with you and our leaders to shape worship that involves our whole community, together. I'm excited and hopeful that we will be energized by how good it is to worship together, and that visitors to our worship will immediately experience the warmth and life of our community when they come to worship with us.
I would be happy to hear from you about your hopes for this summer worship experiment, as we work together to be the church.
                      -Pastor Molly
Worship Helpers: If you would like to participate in worship as a reader or communion server, please email the office.  We know summertime schedules are almost set for many of you, so please let us know when you can help.  Readers at 8:30 & 10:30 am help serve communion and collect the weekly offering.  For 10:30 worship we also need two additional communion servers.  Junior and Senior High youth are encouraged to help out, too!  We always need videographers in the balcony and sound/computer operators downstairs.
Last Chance: Register Now for the

Can you say a little prayer?
As many of you know, several of our youth are participating in the Confirmation Class, and will soon be given the chance to confirm their faith.  As a part of their faith community, we are asking for your prayers.
We have set up a prayer station in the back of the Sanctuary to encourage this.  You will notice a cross with bells and ribbons, and 4 large posters with bios for all of the Confirmands.  You're invited to get to know the Confirmands, then take a bell, say a prayer for the group, and pin the bell on a ribbon to symbolize your prayer.
We have used this same cross for the last 3 Confirmation groups. So, the bells on the cross symbolize our Congregation's prayers for the Confirmands of today, and those who have gone before them.  On Confirmation Sunday (also Pentecost Sunday, June 8th) we will carry the bells into the worship space to remind us of our prayers.
8:30 folks, we'll share this with you in your worship on May 25th.

The Best Thing We Can Do by Bob Peterson
Have you noticed the printed Order of Worship and our internet announcements are filled with children's Sunday School and Youth activities? That is good news for us all. We need to know what is going on with VBS, Vacation Bible School (in case one reader doesn't know what VBS means.) We need to know about our twenty young people about to be confirmed. Even though you may be like me and remember long ago about our kids attending Sunday School and their events, our gifts and tithes now help these programs for children and young people to be a success.
Please bear with me as I remember earlier times. It was 1950 when my wife, Ada Belle and I heard about this church being assigned a new minister named Hylton Sanders. He and his wife Dorothy had been counselors at our Methodist Youth Camp at Camp Radford in the San Bernardino Mountains so we knew about them. We brought our two children, age four and seven, to Sunday School here and attended church. Later our kids said, “Oh, we LIKE this Sunday School the best.” So, naturally, we kept attending, transferred our membership here from our previous South Los Angeles Methodist Church. and we/I have been attending ever since.
A great Sunday School and youth program is the best thing we can do for this community and to help our church grow. So, keep supporting them and encourage our staff and leaders to keep improving that part of our church life.
A few weeks ago we celebrated the lives of two of our church members who are now with our God. On a Thursday we remembered the life of long time member Pauline Dobson. Then on Saturday we had a full house, upstairs and downstairs for Andy  Quintero, husband of Cristine Wolf. I found a place downstairs to squeeze in, and when I opened the Hymnal to sing, I checked the donor page to see who had supplied it and there, printed on the inside front cover it showed that the Hymnal was donated by Pauline and Keith Dobson in love and appreciation of their children and grandchildren. It made and emotional day even more meaningful for me. Thanks be to God.
Scrap Quilting Workshop -
Friday, June 13 - 10am-noon
Prayers and Squares (our prayer quilt ministry) is hosting a
prayers and squares
quilt workshop on Friday, June 13, in May Day Parlor. Pastor Molly will teach simple scrap piecing technique, making half square triangles; we will make a prayer quilt together, and you can learn a skill to use on your own. If you have scraps at home and want to bring any 5" squares, that would be helpful. We also have fabric that you can use to sew a quilt top on your own. Contact Pastor Molly to help.
We also have quilts ready for prayers--if you would like to sponsor a free quilt for someone you know, we simply ask that you ask the recipient's permission, and then be here on a Sunday to help people tie knots and say prayers. Request forms are available in the church office or on our website.
Graduation Sunday, June 15
We will celebrate Graduation Sunday on June 15, Fathers Day! Please email us information about members of your family who are graduating this year--their names (and relationship to you), school, degree (if applicable), and plans for next year (if applicable).  Invite your friends and family to help us celebrate their accomplishments in worship on June 15  in all our services.
Corazon House Build
We are invited to join Faith UMC for a House Build in Tijuana, Mexico on Saturday, June 28th.  We'll be partnering with  Corazon, Inc., an internationally recognized leader in community development in Tijuana and Tecate, Mexico.  They have been building homes for the poor for over 30 years.  The cost of the house is around $8,000 which has been paid for by a grant from the Mexican government.
