Dear Resurrection Family,
Thank you for the many birthday cards and well wishes last weekend! It was great to celebrate turning 50 with you and with pie and custard!
One of the dreams I had several years ago was to take you as a congregation, along with churches across the country, to the lands of the Bible to see where the stories of the Bible take place. To pursue this dream, your Staff-Parish Committee allows me a few weeks off for study each year to travel to the biblical lands, to meet with archaeologists and expert guides, and to take a film crew to document the sights.
Each fall I take you to these lands via video clips during one of my fall sermon series. We left early Monday for Turkey where we have spent this week retracing Paul's life and his missionary journeys. We've filmed at five archaeological sites - cities where Paul preached and founded churches. We had a great day in Ephesus today - one of the world's great archaeological sites. So far, we've covered Paul's first and the Turkish portions of his second and third missionary journeys. As you read this we're on the way to Greece to film at four archaeological sites Philipi, Thessalonica, Athens and Corinth. I’m excited for the fall sermon series based upon this trip called The Call: The Life and Message of the Apostle Paul. I’m sending back some video clips, and in worship this weekend I'll be sharing a two-minute preview of where we've been. The photo above was taken last night as I warched the sun set at the bay where Paul sailed out from Asia Minor to Greece. I've posted more photos on my Facebook page if you are interested.
If you're looking for a fun activity tonight, it's Resurrection Night at Theatre in the Park. Join your church family at Shawnee Mission Park for "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer." You can purchase tickets at the theater box office on site. Gates open at 6:30 pm and the show begins promptly at 8:30 pm. Don't forget to wear red and your Resurrection name tag to the show so you can meet others from our congregation.
This weekend, we will have the opportunity to hear Dr. Anna Carter Florence at our Leawood campus. She is an outstanding and nationally recognized preacher and she is the Associate Professor of Preaching at Columbia Theological Seminary. She has written books on preaching and is a frequent teacher and lecturer in this country and abroad. I know you will be blessed by worship this weekend.
