The United Methodist Church of the Resurrection Blue Springs eNote from Pastor Penny Ellwood for Friday, 18 July 2014

The United Methodist Church of the Resurrection Blue Springs eNote from Pastor Penny Ellwood for Friday, 18 July 2014
Greetings Resurrection Blue Springs,
I hope you've had a chance to enjoy the fabulous weather this week.  What a gift it is in the middle of July!
It was a little warmer last Sunday afternoon when we held our special baptism service at the Scott's.  However, the temperature only added to the festivities afterward.  This service was again a very special time for our church family and I want to extend a congratulations to those who were baptized last weekend:  Chandra Callahan, Rachel & Joshua Dowell, Carmen Myers, Michele Shelby, and Makaiah Spooner were baptized and re-affirming their baptismal vows were Becky and Kerry McKeever and Bernadette Spooner.   We had almost 70 family and friends who came to support these children and adults taking this important step of faith.  We had a great celebration afterward with food, fellowship and fun in and around the pool.  A special thanks to Cully Scott and Mary Pulley who helped to host us.
Don't forget that Saturday morning is our Faithwork day. Faithwork is one of the best places to invite friends and neighbors to join us in putting our faith to work and serving our community. This Saturday we’ll be heading to work at the new ReStore not far from the church.   This thrift store helps fund our local Habitat for Humanity.   The new store is located on North 7 Highway between QuikTrip and Price Chopper.  We'll help prepare, price and sell items while there. Meet at our church at 9:45 am to carpool over or join us at the store this Saturday, July 19 at 10 am. This is an awesome opportunity to make a difference in our community.  We'll plan to work till about 2 pm.
We're in for a treat this Sunday as the Rev. Dr. Anna Carter Florence, the Peter Marshall Associate Professor of Preaching at Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, Georgia, a seminary of the Presbyterian Church U.S.A will be offering our message. Dr. Florence is considered by many to be one of the best preachers in America, as indicated by the number of invitations she receives to preach around the country. Anna is a regular speaker at the Festival of Homiletics, an annual gathering of 1,500 pastors eager to learn from the best, and is the author of “Preaching as Testimony.”  I hope you'll invite your friends and join us this Sunday for her message entitled, "Parable Universe."
One more thing, I forgot to mention in last week's enote, if you'd like to follow the happenings with our mission team serving on the Navaho Nation in Windowrock, NM, you can take a look at the trip blog at http://navajo.rezmissions.org.
