Partners in Health News & Announcements for Tuesday, 26 August 2014
Less than two hours
outside Albuquerque in Navajo Nation, basic health care is dangerously
underfunded and hard to come by.
This is nothing short of a moral injustice—a crisis that's happening right here at home.
And until the Native American health care system receives the funding and the attention it deserves from the public and our elected officials, we need to raise awareness about this issue in our own communities.
In the meantime, PIH's sister organization in Navajo Nation, Community Outreach and Patient Empowerment (COPE), is on the front lines training Community Health Representatives like Lenora Shirley to fill the gaps in health care needs.
Will you join me in thanking these heroes?
Since 2009, PIH and COPE have partnered with Navajo Nation to help train and
support Community Health Representatives, who are fluent in Navajo and work
hard to preserve the health and cultural traditions of their elders. This is nothing short of a moral injustice—a crisis that's happening right here at home.

Shirley is one of more than 100 Community Health Representatives PIH has helped train. She drives hours over dirt roads to visit her patients, monitoring vital signs, explaining medication, and empowering patients to make healthy changes that could save their lives.
She'd probably tell you that serving her community is reward enough. But her attention and compassion to the sick members of her tribe is heroism, pure and simple.
Let's make sure Navajo Community Health Representatives know how much we appreciate their vital work:
