Trinity United Methodist Church Daily Scripture Email Devotion for Tuesday, 26 August 2014 "Do it again, Lord!" & Wednesday, 27 August 2014 "On the Heights"
"Do it again, Lord!"
Lord, I have heard of your fame; I stand in awe of your deeds, O Lord.  Renew them in our day, in our time make them known (Hab. 3:2).
Oh, isn't that our prayer and our plea!?  Lord, do it again. Bring peace, protect the innocent, lift the spirits of the oppressed, restore harmony among people.  That is my prayer.  And then I hear a faint echo of the voice of God saying, "Will you help me?  Will you do something; will you do your part?  I've got a billion followers; you would think they could make more of a difference for good, for the cause of love and kindness and mercy."
Conclusion:  Pray relentlessly for God to act in mercy, and work relentlessly to be an instrument of peace.  Are you in?

"On the Heights"
Though the fig tree does not bud and there are no grapes on the vines, though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food, though there are no sheep in the pen and no cattle in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in The Lord, I will be joyful in God my Savior.  The Sovereign Lord is my strength; he makes my feet like the feet of a deer, he enables me to go on the heights (Hab 3:17 - 19).
Wow!  What a prayer.  I'm not sure I'm mature enough in my walk with God to pray this, because I tend to want to rejoice in God when the grapes and figs are aplenty, when the flocks are huge and the cattle are many, i.e. when everything is going my way.  But that's not what the prophet is saying, and it's not where God wants us to be.
It's okay that we're not there yet, but know that's where spiritual maturity will lead you and me.  It's when we, like Paul, have learned to be content in all circumstances (Philippians), and when God alone is our strength, that we will be lifted to the heights, and be able to leap like a deer. Take me deeper, O God.  Amen.
