Sunday's Sermon & Scripture:
"Always Blessing, Always Blessed"
Acts 1:15-17, 21-26 & Ephesians 1:15-23

Scripture:
Acts 1:15 During this period, when the group of believers numbered about 120, Kefa stood up and addressed his fellow-believers: 16 “Brothers, the Ruach HaKodesh spoke in advance through David about Y’hudah, and these words of the Tanakh had to be fulfilled. He was guide for those who arrested Yeshua — 17 he was one of us and had been assigned a part in our work.”
21 Therefore, one of the men who have been with us continuously throughout the time the Lord Yeshua traveled around among us, 22 from the time Yochanan was immersing people until the day Yeshua was taken up from us — one of these must become a witness with us to his resurrection.”
23 They nominated two men — Yosef Bar-Sabba, surnamed Justus, and Mattityahu. 24 Then they prayed, “Lord, you know everyone’s heart. Show us which of these two you have chosen 25 to take over the work and the office of emissary that Y’hudah abandoned to go where he belongs.” 26 Then they drew lots to decide between the two, and the lot fell to Mattityahu. So he was added to the eleven emissaries.
Ephesians 1:15 For this reason, ever since I heard about your trust in the Lord Yeshua and your love for all God’s people, 16 I have not stopped giving thanks for you. In my prayers I keep asking 17 the God of our Lord Yeshua the Messiah, the glorious Father, to give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you will have full knowledge of him. 18 I pray that he will give light to the eyes of your hearts, so that you will understand the hope to which he has called you, what rich glories there are in the inheritance he has promised his people, 19 and how surpassingly great is his power working in us who trust him. It works with the same mighty strength he used 20 when he worked in the Messiah to raise him from the dead and seat him at his right hand in heaven, 21 far above every ruler, authority, power, dominion or any other name that can be named either in the ‘olam hazeh or in the ‘olam haba. 22 Also, he has put all things under his feet[a] and made him head over everything for the Messianic Community, 23 which is his body, the full expression of him who fills all creation.[Footnotes:
Ephesians 1:22 Psalm 8:7(6)]
John Wesley's Notes-Commentary for Acts 1:15-17, 21-26 & Ephesians 1:15-23
Verse 15
[15] And in those days Peter stood up in the midst of the disciples, and said, (the number of names together were about an hundred and twenty,)
The number of persons together — Who were together in the upper room.
were a hundred and twenty — But he had undoubtedly many more in other places; of whom more than five hundred saw him at once after his resurrection, 1 Corinthians 15:6.
Verse 16
[16] Men and brethren, this scripture must needs have been fulfilled, which the Holy Ghost by the mouth of David spake before concerning Judas, which was guide to them that took Jesus.
Psalms 41:9.
Verse 21
[21] Wherefore of these men which have companied with us all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us,
All the time that the Lord Jesus was going in and out — That is, conversing familiarly: over us - as our Master. Psalms 109:8.
Verse 22
[22] Beginning from the baptism of John, unto that same day that he was taken up from us, must one be ordained to be a witness with us of his resurrection.
To be a witness with us of his resurrection — And of the circumstances which preceded and followed it.
Verse 23
[23] And they appointed two, Joseph called Barsabas, who was surnamed Justus, and Matthias.
And they appointed two — So far the faithful could go by consulting together, but no further. Therefore here commenced the proper use of the lot, whereby a matter of importance, which cannot be determined by any ordinary method, is committed to the Divine decision.
Verse 25
[25] That he may take part of this ministry and apostleship, from which Judas by transgression fell, that he might go to his own place.
Fell — By his transgression - Some time before his death: to go to his own place - That which his crimes had deserved, and which he had chosen for himself, far from the other apostles, in the region of death.
Verse 15
[15] Wherefore I also, after I heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus, and love unto all the saints,
Since I heard of your faith and love — That is, of their perseverance and increase therein.
Verse 16
[16] Cease not to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers;
I cease not — In all my solemn addresses to God.
To give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers — So he did of all the churches, Colossians 1:9.
Verse 17
[17] That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him:
That the Father of that infinite glory which shines in the face of Christ, from whom also we receive the glorious inheritance, Ephesians 1:18, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation - The same who is the Spirit of promise is also, in the progress of the faithful, the Spirit of wisdom and revelation; making them wise unto salvation, and revealing to them the deep things of God. He is here speaking of that wisdom and revelation which are common to all real Christians.
Verse 18
[18] The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints,
The eyes of your understanding — It is with these alone that we discern the things of God. Being first opened, and then enlightened - - By his Spirit.
That ye may know what is the hope of his calling — That ye may experimentally and delightfully know what are the blessings which God has called you to hope for by his word and his Spirit.
And what is the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints — What an immense treasure of blessedness he hath provided as an inheritance for holy souls.
Verse 19
[19] And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power,
And what the exceeding greatness of his power toward us who believe — Both in quickening our dead souls, and preserving them in spiritual life.
According to the power which he exerted in Christ, raising him from the dead — By the very same almighty power whereby he raised Christ; for no less would suffice.
Verse 20
[20] Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places,
And he hath seated him at his own right hand — That is, he hath exalted him in his human nature, as a recompence for his sufferings, to a quiet, everlasting possession of all possible blessedness, majesty, and glory.
Verse 21
[21] Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come:
Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion — That is, God hath invested him with uncontrollable authority over all demons in hell, all angels in heaven, and all the princes and potentates on earth.
And every name that is named — We know the king is above all, though we cannot name all the officers of his court. So we know that Christ is above all, though we are not able to name all his subjects.
Not only in this world, but also in that which is to come — The world to come is so styled, not because it does not yet exist, but because it is not yet visible. Principalities and powers are named now; but those also who are not even named in this world, but shall be revealed in the world to come, are all subject to Christ.
Verse 22
[22] And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church,
And he hath given him to be head over all things to the church — An head both of guidance and government, and likewise of life and influence, to the whole and every member of it. All these stand in the nearest union with him, and have as continual and effectual a communication of activity, growth, and strength from him, as the natural body from its head.
Verse 23
[23] Which is his body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all.
The fulness of him that filleth all in all — It is hard to say in what sense this can be spoken of the church; but the sense is easy and natural, if we refer it to Christ, who is the fulness of the Father.
Sermon Story "Trusting God in Prayer for Our Choices" by Gary Lee Parker for Sunday, 17 May 2015
As we seek the message if these two passages, we realize how much we need to trust God in our Choices. First we hear the the 11 Disciples in the Upper Room from the Day of Pentecost decide they need to choose and replacement for Judas Iscariot. Seond, we read the messate of Paul to the people in the Messianic Community about giving thanks for their witness and advice to pray for God's Wisdom in everything in their lives. The desire to have 12 Apostles as Jesus picked them, they desired to fill the vacancy ofthe death and lost of Judas. They prayed and chose lots to choose two then they prayed further for God's wisdom than they chose the replacement. Now, Paul was giving thanks for the Messianic Community in Ephesus for their faithfulness than he prayed for God's wisdom to be upon them. I am reminded here of churches that seek a pastor who the Bishop will appoint to be their new pastor. The churches pray for God's Wisdom to be upon the Bishop in their appointements or in our Confeneces case we pray for he guidance of God's wisdom to beupon her in her choice appointments that she will receive God's wisdom to place the pastos in the churches that God desires for the churches to be revived as God's people to live out God's Holiness in their communities to allow allows to see their love for God, themeselves, each other, and even people outside the church community. How do understand the concept to pray for God's Wisdome? How do you understand trusting God in all circumstances? How will you seek God's wisdom in your daily choices? We come today to seek God's Wisdom and Grace as we come and eat the Body and Jesus drinkin His Blood in celebrating the Holy Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist singing Hymn "The Perfect Wisdom of Our God" by  Keith Getty and Stuart Townend
1. The perfect wisdom of our God
Revealed in all the universe:
All things created by His hand
And held together at His command.
He knows the mysteries of the seas,
The secrets of the stars are His;
He guides the planets on their way
And turns the earth through another day.
2. The matchless wisdom of His ways
That mark the path of righteousness;
His word a lamp unto my feet,
His Spirit teaching and guiding me.
And O the mystery of the Cross,
That God should suffer for the lost,
So that the fool might shame the wise,
And all the glory might go to Christ!
3. O grant me wisdom from above,
To pray for peace and cling to love,
And teach me humbly to receive
The sun and rain of Your sovereignty.
Each strand of sorrow has a place
Within this tapestry of grace;
So through the trials I choose to say:
"Your perfect will in Your perfect way."

Eyes of Your Heart
Our youth (and a new adult book group) have been reading "Tattoos on the Heart." This beautiful reflection on compassion and love was written by Father Greg Boyle, founder of Homeboy Industries here in Los Angeles. It takes this big idea--the love of God--and makes it real in the midst of life in Boyle Heights, working alongside gang members and former gang members, as well as their mothers and kids and neighbors.
Early in the book, he describes a young man from his neighborhood, fiercely independent and not keen on taking advice. Except one day-when he unexpected declares, "'You know, I'm gonna take that advice, and I'm gonna let it marinate,' pointing at his heart, 'right here.'"
Letting the voice of God, heard in prayer, in the words of someone we know, in something we read, "marinate in our hearts" opens up the possibility of real change. Of new life.
In Ephesians, Paul writes a prayer that "the eyes of your heart will have enough light to see what is the hope of God's call" (Ephesians 1:18 CEB). Father Greg quotes from Ignatius of Loyola, founder of the Jesuits: "Take care always to keep before your eyes, first, God."
In a moment where you need to make a choice, or when you face uncertainty, I invite you to try this-to look at the options again, considering God in front of all the options. Try letting your view be changed by seeing with your heart, through the lens of the love of God.
Grace and peace,
Pastor Molly

Sermon Series: A Place to Call Home
In Resurrection, Jesus makes a home for us that's something new, wild and different. It's home where we're loved unconditionally, where we become family with unlikely people, and a "home" that isn't restricted to any one place.
Pastor Molly began a new sermon series on April 19, exploring what it means to find a home in God.
Parking Reminder: If you are able, we encourage you to park at the Wells Fargo bank on Sundaymornings, and walk across the street, reserving the parking lot for those with mobility challenges or for new visitors.
We also have a bike rack on the patio, for those who choose to bike to church--and Bike to Work Week is a great reason to make it a Bike to Church Weekend!
Thanks for your consideration.
May 24 is Pentecost: Wear red.
Celebrate the gift of the Holy Spirit and the birthday of the Church on Pentecost Sunday, May 24. We encourage everyone to wear red (or orange...) to our worship services, and come ready for special music, drama and visuals in honor of the gift of the Spirit.
Come, Holy Spirit!
This Mother's Day (May 10), we chose to honor mothers in a special way:with a gift to support disaster relief work in Nepal, following the recent earthquakes.
So, instead of giving out flowers in honor of our mothers in worship, we gave out simple flower stickers in honor of mothers and asked that you consider a donation in honor of your mother, in honor of someone who's "mothered" you, or just in compassion for those in need.
So far, your generous donations have totaled almost $900 (including the money we would have spent on flowers). We are sending this money toUMCOR, the United Methodist Committee on Relief, for their disaster relief work in Nepal. There is still time to donate. Go to our website and learn how you can give.

The Lay Looker, Bob Peterson
a view from the pew from a longtime member of our church
I read in last week's Newsletter that our new Chair of Trustees is Mark Elenbaas and so I wish to thank him for accepting this responsibility and wish him the best. Perhaps you already know that our Trustee Chair's primary responsibility is to take care of our building and our church campus. No Chair can do it alone, so there is a committee of which he is the leader. They are the first to hear or be notified about something that needs painting, repairing, replacing or brought into good condition. Mark and his fellow Trustees cannot do anything without our help. Some of us help out during week-end work parties. People who contribute to our church budget help financially and our church council, led by Nina Dooley, approves and often makes suggestions as to the direction we must follow. Everyone who wishes may have a say in what we do to keep our property looking properly cared for. If you wish to know more, talk to Mark, Molly or Nina.
Coming to the pot-luck luncheon this Sunday? I happen to be out of town and will miss it, but you should plan to attend. You'll meet some wonderful fellow parishioners.
It's still in my mind and perhaps yours as well. When our recent substitute preacher, Rev. Nicole, quoted a line that went like this, “Don't believe everything you think," it set me to wondering about what a great twist on a common phrase it was, such as don't believe everything you read, hear or say. It's always special, what stays in one's mind following a sermon.
If you would volunteer to be a Greeter for Sunday's 10:30 AM worship services during the months of June and July contact me at church or by phone and I'll schedule you for that important but brief job. We use three greeters each Sunday and May is well taken care of but June & July Greeters are needed. Otherwise, I'll have to urge you in person to sign up. Younger families and church members are especially welcome for this special and important twenty minutes of fame.
